This is another edition in Security.World?s Company Grows series.
Whether you really know of BCDVideo, you better not underestimate them nor ignore their impact on our industry. BCDVideo has become the security integrator’s choice for IP video surveillance solutions. Maybe flying just under the radar of many top-flight players in the physical security industry, BCDVideo has seen some impressive growth. Formed in 1999, BCDVideo is a physical security vendor that has seen some incredible growth over the past decade and a half. Late in 2017, BCDVideo made a major upgrade when they moved into their new, spacious company headquarters in Buffalo Grove, Illinois.
This recent move to a new corporate headquarters seems as symbolic as it is physical. As you walk around the new building and strike up conversations with employees, you get a sense of arrival. You pick up on a sense of pride that seems more collegiate than coerced.
Eugene Kozlovitser, BCDVideo?s Technology Director —who works tirelessly to ensure that the specs for a security project are the right specs with the right hardware and the right software— believes BCDVideo is on a great growth trajectory.
?I see us doubling again in size year over year,? when asked where he saw the company within five years.
According to company literature, BCDVideo is the security integrator?s choice for IP video surveillance solutions. They are the IP video server manufacturer for the top security integrators in North America. The reason is simple. They architect custom solutions that precisely fit each project to deliver optimal performance, scalability, and efficiency.
?We guarantee the solution,? Kozlovitser continues. ?We know computers. We know specs. We know how all the pieces go together. We put technical specs together that others may have missed.? This is a guarantee the whole company stands behind. You get the sense that Kozlovitser is being more confident than cocky. And when you are part of a company that really has ?figured it out,? you can stand a little taller.
Jeremiah Boyd, now in his third year at the company and recently promoted to RMA Support Manager, sees the company becoming even more professional and more efficient as they move into their new digs.
?We can deliver quicker responses and be just that much more efficient,? Boyd says as he looks around the spacious warehouse.
Delivering servers and storage is a big part of what BCDVideo provides, but the expanded product line up and service offerings round out the company?s capabilities and what their customers are looking for in such larger security projects.
April Cambruzzi, Business Development Manager —a team member that has been with the company for nearly a decade— passionately tells us that BCDVideo ?really is different.? She explains that the company is run like a family and truly feels like family. In fact, there are a handful of examples of family members working together at the company. ?This creates an atmosphere where we really want to help each other succeed,? Cambruzzi tells us.
A major differentiator for the company is Vice President Tom Larson. Larson is a technical visionary. From very early on, Larson understood the importance of the server’s overall performance and bandwidth capabilities. Hard drive performance. Network card performance. CPU performance. Motherboard bus architecture. All of these specs have a direct impact on the overall performance of the solution. And when you are trying to squeeze every IP-camera onto a server, every byte matters.
Larson has been personally involved in architecting some very large video surveillance projects and that experience has pushed him to the forefront of how security projects need to be built. And he has been able to highlight the right speeds and feeds to the rest of the BCDVideo team —especially Kozlovitser— to continue that ability to build the right solution for each specific project.
As the company gets deeper into larger projects, Larson saw the importance of the underlying networking equipment – ironic when you think about network video surveillance. A typical oversight by other vendors, Larson has put together networking equipment that is expanding the capabilities of the overall project.
Business Development Manager Cambruzzi explains, ?Tom educates the team on the technical aspects of the project, our service team is there to deliver on the needs of the customer, and the sales team is there to showcase the overall value.?
And it all works.
From one employee to another, you can feel the passion that the company is truly onto something special. You can feel the trust that each teammate has for each other and that their customers have for them. And it?s authentic. Nothing seems forced or fabricated. Again, something that customers can figure out in short order.
So where does all this trust, passion, and authenticity come from? That family feeling is not an accident and something that company founder and CEO Jeff Burgess has nurtured along with a customer-first philosophy.
Burgess has seen many changes since he started BCDVideo. ?For one, we started as an IT reseller building high-availability servers for Fortune 500 companies. Eight years later, we flipped to the security market which became our ultimate destiny. But from the beginning to now, I see a company maturation process that has given us the ability to realize gaps in the market and fill those gaps with solution-based technology.?
That customer-first philosophy is not an accident and something that company founder and CEO Jeff Burgess has nurtured along the way. Burgess explained, ?Ease of doing business, doing whatever it takes. But more than anything else, trust. We take that personally and it is embedded in every team member. And it shows.?
?From the beginning to now,? Burgess added, ?I see a company maturation process that has given us the ability to realize gaps in the market and fill those gaps with solution-based technology. The willingness to take risk. The willingness to fail. That helped us succeed. You cannot possibly continue to push the envelope and try innovative technologies and not fail at times. It makes you stronger, better. There is a reason why companies are beating a path to our door to build for them. I don?t say that arrogantly ? I say that because we have earned it.?
BCDVideo?s commitment to its manufacturing partners and security integrators has not only propelled their own success. They have become the bedrock to which some of the top physical security companies build their own products on. ?We have had the great fortune to work with Genetec on delivering their StreamVault line into the security marketplace, among others,? said Burgess. ?Additionally, we are looking to broaden our product line with additional OEM agreements with major market players.?
When asked why he thinks other vendors want to do business with BCDVideo, Burgess says ?Ease of doing business, doing whatever it takes. But more than anything else, trust. We take that personally and it is embedded in every team member. And it shows.?
He sees the number one achievement in getting BCDVideo to where it is today ?is our commitment to our security integrators and manufacturer partners. They are trusting us to secure the most famous sites in the world as well as the smallest. The fact that we treat them all equally makes each one of equal importance. We don?t play favorites. Public infrastructure security is depending on us. I think the integrators feel that when working with us rather than just buying a box anywhere else.?
BCDVideo is still privately held without any private equity or venture capital money. That does give me a sense of personal pride, I guess. Especially considering our current payroll and such a strong leadership team.
We asked Burgess what market areas is he looking at to grow the company further. ?We have added feet on the street in Dubai and Toronto to compliment what we already have in the UK. We have the great fortune to work with Genetec?s worldwide sales force on delivering their StreamVault line to the market with the target of expanding to regions outside of the United States. In addition, we are looking to broaden our product line with additional OEM agreements with major market players.?
BCDVideo is indeed growing. We wrapped up our conversation with Burgess by asking about his plans for the future.
?We think 2018 will define our ultimate destiny and lay out the course for 2019, 2020, and beyond. I clearly see the future for BCDVideo. We will lead the industry in purpose-built video surveillance servers, storage, and networking products by a wide margin. But while the technology will lead the way, our consistency, execution, and accountability will define our reputation.?
I?m sure Kozlovitser agrees.
