Biometric devices are included on the Authorized Equipment Lists for both the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, and are an allowable and encouraged use of federal grant funds. Last year the government provided just over a billion dollars for state and local governments to purchase biometric systems and devices, and robust funding levels are expected again this year.
