One of the major benefits of network IP-cameras is the fact that it can be accessed over a network allowing for remote viewing of your home or business operations.
One of the major vulnerabilities of these network IP-cameras is that unless the purchaser of said network IP-caemra changes the default username and password of the camera, it can be viewed by anyone in the world.
Probably not what was desired when the owner of that camera installed it.
SecurityHive.com has come across a website that streams video from unsecured video cameras that employ default usernames and passwords.
The site claims it is doing this to raise awareness of privacy risks and we wish to highlight this major security/privacy issues as well.
Please make sure you change the default username and password of your network IP-cameras!
The most common location of the cameras was inside the United States, but many others were accessed from South Korea, China, Mexico, the UK, Italy, and France.
Some are from businesses, and some are from personal residences. Particularly alarming was the number of camera feeds of sleeping babies, which people often set up to protect them, but, being unaware of the risks, don’t change the username or password from the default options that came with the cameras.
The Russian site accesses cameras from several manufacturers such as AvTech, Hikvision, and others – an open issue for anyone with a network IP-camera.
