City Ordinance Plays Factor In Solving Crimes In San Juan, TX

Retail Security: A Complex Sale

Recent surveillance footage from a Sprint cell phone store revealed a robbery in San Juan, Texas. Thanks to that surveillance footage, investigators were able to locate the suspects involved.

For two weeks, San Juan police were unable to locate the pair of cell phone robbers seen in security camera video. But now, the two suspects plus two additional teens have been identified and arrested in connection to this crime as well as three other robberies in the upper Valley.

San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzales says it’s the latest case that has benefited from a city ordinance passed in August 2010 that requires all businesses in San Juan to have security cameras installed.

"We have been able to capture and arrest an individual based on that video surveillance," Gonzalez said. "Within the past month, we probably arrested 10 to 12 individuals based on video surveillance."

That number includes a pair of Valluco gang members arrested in connection to a day care center robbery back on May 18. Investigators were able to arrest four men after identifying them on the day care’s security camera footage.

"The whole purpose is to target the criminal end of it, to make sure we capture the individuals coming into the businesses and being able to prosecute them in court," Gonzalez explained.

Gonzalez says the video evidence from the security cameras is hard to disprove. "The video itself won’t lie."
