NeighborhoodScout® research reveals the 100 safest cities in America with 25,000 or more people, based on the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents.
Data used for this research are the number of total crimes reported to the FBI to have occurred in each city, and the population of each city.
Crime data used are the most recent data the FBI classifies as ?Final, non-preliminary.? It is the most up-to-date and fully vetted data with complete national coverage that is available. NeighborhoodScout insist on using Final, Non-Preliminary data for their analyses and analytics, rather than basing their research on preliminary data that may need to be updated or have errors in it.
The FBI releases these data approximately 10 months after the close of a calendar year. For example, the 2018 list is based on the 2016 year total data which was released in Final, Non-Preliminary form in September, 2017. The 2017 year total crime data is not complete. The FBI is still working through data issues and reporting issues before that data can be considered Final, and Non-Preliminary.
“We continue to see bedroom communities, which are within large metro areas and near major urban centers like Boston, Chicago, and New York, make the top of our list,” said Dr. Andrew Schiller, CEO and founder of Location, Inc. and NeighborhoodScout. “These safe communities within the urban/suburban fabric of America’s largest metropolitan areas often combine access to high-paying jobs in the urban center, decent schools, and a high quality of life. This access to opportunity increases home values, with the result often being lower crime.”
The top ten cities from the list are:
1 Ridgefield, CT
2 Bergenfield, NJ
3 Franklin, MA
4 Lexington, MA
5 Shrewsbury, MA
6 Zionsville, IN
7 Buffalo Grove, IL
8 Weston, FL
9 Lake in the Hills, IL
10 Billerica, MA
