Security video of a tornado striking a Lafayette, IN middle school has the school district doing its homework on how best to keep kids safe. No decision has been made on demolishing or refurbishing Southwestern Middle School, which was hit by one of dozens of tornadoes to hit Indiana November 17.
“This is the first impact and it hits the west wall and then the south wall,” said Principal Karen Smith. The video as the tornado impacted Southwestern Middle School is harrowing. School security cameras captured the scene. “When you see light, that means the west wall is already gone. That is the light from the outside coming in,” said Smokey Anderson, head of emergency management for Tippecanoe County.
The tornado hit on a Sunday when there were no students at the school. You can imagine a much worse outcome had kids been in these halls or in the cafeteria.
