Video surveillance specialist Siqura teams up with Siemens Austria for the security of Austria’s Plabutschtunnel. At the request of the Austrian Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft (ASFiNAG), Siqura installed video surveillance and incident detection systems. The Plabutschtunnel is the second-longest two-pipe tunnel of Europe.

Together with Siemens Austria, Siqura fitted the tunnel with 32 remote-controlled cameras, 141 fixed cameras and 237 intelligent cameras with incident detection and traffic monitoring.

Time is of the essence 
Siemens’ Christian Gobiet, project coordinator for the Plabutschtunnel, explains that time was of the essence for this project, since the whole system had to be ordered, installed, commissioned and operational within one year.

“A challenge you can only beat when you have a partner you can rely on and that’s exactly what we have. We had to act fast and so we did. There was no time for experimenting with new technologies. We had to use existing products that already proved themselves in the field. Products we knew that Siqura could provide on time.”

The Plabutschtunnel The Plabutschtunnel provides a way underneath the town of Graz and even though the tunnel is ‘only’ 10 kilometers long, it has two pipes that each contain two roadways, adding up to a total of 40 kilometers of highway. The Plabutschtunnel is one of Austria’s busiest tunnels, yet hardly faces traffic jams, because it has ample capacity to accommodate all commuters.
