For young professionals, the security industry presents one of the rare career environments where opportunity can blossom in a myriad of ways, at any given moment. Each and every day, companies within this industry are seeking out the next batch of talent. Opportunities can be found in the form of contributing as a manufacturer, distributor, installer, or even a rep firm. The best part? These opportunities are only going to increase.
Like many, I didn’t originally set out to work in security. In fact, I am here completely by accident. In 2020, I accepted a role as a production technician in the warehouse of PDK. It was my responsibility to build panels, program boards, test the equipment, and ship it to our distributors across the country.
Now, I have had the absolute pleasure and privilege of assisting PDK in creating new processes and procedures, establishing stronger brand recognition, cultivating impactful relationships, managing our distribution channel, leading our inside sales team, and coordinating strategic partnership with other industry brands. This journey has resulted in business relationships becoming genuine friendships, various awards and forms of recognition, and most importantly, a sense of fulfillment in my daily work.
What Accelerates Growth for Young Professionals
From the outside, it appears as though every steppingstone has fallen into place over the years. What people don’t see is the effort and countless hours of self-improvement that are implemented outside of the office.
When people ask me what it takes to accelerate growth in this industry, I don’t think it’s one big thing. Rather, it’s a series of small, intentional steps that add up.
Learn the ecosystem early
Security is an interconnected web of manufacturers, distributors, integrators, and end users. The earlier you understand how all these pieces fit together, the quicker you’ll be able to see where your contributions add value.
Build relationships, not just transactions.
This industry is smaller than it seems, and reputation travels fast. Focusing on long-term trust rather than short-term wins has been one of the biggest accelerators in my own journey. Play nice with everyone and don’t speak ill of your competition. My favorite joke in this industry is that every expo/event includes the same people, just wearing different polos. In reality, you don’t know who you will work for or with next, so lean into all relationships. Your network is your net worth.
Seek mentors and role models.
Many industry leaders are eager to invest in the next generation. I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who not only gave advice but also challenged me to raise my level of aspiration. Experienced individuals are often more willing to help than you think. Don’t hesitate to ask.
Stay tech-forward
Cloud-based systems, AI, mobile-first solutions, and cybersecurity are reshaping our world. Being the person who can bridge traditional security with these innovations makes you invaluable. Do not get stuck in the past.
Say yes to opportunities.
Some of my most important career steps came from projects that weren’t in my original job description. Opportunities are created for those who are willing to do more.
Build a personal brand.
Identify your role in the industry. Utilize social media platforms to display your journey as well as how you can offer value to others in the industry. I personally utilize LinkedIn to enhance my brand. Because of consistent efforts, I am now recognized by others in the industry each time I attend an event, regardless of state or vertical. It has opened more doors than I thought possible! Trust me when I say this, it’s easier to stand out than you think.
Improve off the field’. I like to compare stepping into the office as stepping onto the playing field. If I don’t practice off the field, I won’t excel on the field. This includes reading, completing certificates in certain subjects, paying for coaching, etc. Leaders recognize when young professionals have true ambition. Rather than risk losing these individuals, they provide promotions.
Closing Thoughts
If you’re a young professional wondering where to build your career, don’t overlook the security industry. The workforce demand is real, the technology is evolving at lightning speed, and the opportunities to grow are unmatched.
If you’re a leader or executive in the industry, please remember this – do not confuse age with ability. I know countless young professionals who are fully capable of outperforming hundreds of ‘experienced’ sales professionals I have met in this industry. Take a shot at the young talent and mold them.
This is an industry where you don’t have to wait decades to make an impact, you can start making one now.
From my own journey, I can say this: if you’re willing to stay curious, build relationships, and adapt quickly, your growth here will accelerate faster than you might expect.
