Added security is coming to a Michigan area statue after repeated vandalism. Security cameras are being added around the Father Marquette statue in downtown Marquette to try to stop future vandalism. The statue has been painted by vandals twice in the past. The cameras are weather proof, offer a live view of the statue at all times and can be moved if a better angle is available.
"Father Marquette is important to our community because actually our city and our county are named after him, so I think he is important to our community because of that and kind of where he is placed, he’s kind of looking over our city every day and over the shoreline," said Emily Lewis, Beautification Committee member.
The Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee is also looking to make the statue handicap accessible as part of an ongoing project started last year.
