Preparations have been made in Kirkuk to install security cameras in the downtown area, at the entrances of the city and all the checkpoints. The security committee of Kirkuk announced in a press conference at the Kirkuk directorate of police the first phase of the surveillance camera project. The cameras have arrived and they will be installed to monitor the city.
Twenty billion Iraqi Dinar have been allocated by the provincial council for the project. According to officials, this surveillance system will be the most advanced in the entire Kurdistan region. Kirkuk is the first province in Iraq to take this step in security.
“Four hundred fifty cameras are supposedly to be installed but only the first round of cameras has arrived,” Ahmad Al-askari, the head of the security committee explained. He did not mention the exact number of cameras that have arrived via the Erbil airport.
The Kirkuk administration has signed a contract with a foreign company for implementing the project.
“The cameras will be installed in the center of the city, at the entrances and the checkpoints. They will watch the traffic system as well. They can be used for civil affairs besides monitoring the streets and the market places.
