Verint Announces New Webinar on Hook and Chain ATM Attacks

ATM

During the interactive virtual event, Verint and Regions Bank experts will explain how designing and installing a smart, secure ATM infrastructure mitigates theft amid rising security incidents.

Verint Systems will host an hour-long webinar on Thursday, December 10 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (ET), during which keynote speakers will look at how staying one step ahead of ATM theft protects banks’ bottom line.

ATM crime has been on the rise for some time; in early 2020, there were reports of an uptick in ATM thefts in St. Louis, Chicago, Baltimore and other major cities, as well as the bombing of ATMs in Florida.

Reportedly, authorities have attributed this rise in incidents to the “low-risk and high-reward” nature of the crime, making superior security a vital requirement for any ATM strategy.

“Hook and chain” attacks typically occur between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., during which time criminals attach one end of a chain or cable to an ATM and the other to the rear of a (usually) stolen vehicle.

The driver quickly accelerates to force open the safe door and if successful, the perpetrators could get away with upwards of $150,000 in cash cassettes. Even if the attack fails, the damage to the ATM and surrounding structure can reach as high as $45,000.

Key focuses the panel of experts will address during the webinar:

  • What’s happening in the industry with ATM attacks
  • The Verint ATM solution
  • A live Q&A with Regions on security tactics
  • How advanced intrusion detection systems can help to monitor people and vehicles and how real-time alerts around motion in a scene can be the difference between loss or legal action
  • How to implement a layered security approach that isn’t too time-consuming or costly, and can help to slow down organized crime units
  • Interactive Q&A session with the audience

Featured speakers include Matt Hubbard, Southeast Regional Sales Manager, Verint; and Randall Shields, Vice President, Senior Field Investigator, Regions Bank.

Per Shields, the organized nature of ATM attacks makes layered security all the more critical.

“The perpetrators of these attacks are like a Nascar race team – they’re organized and hit their targets quickly and get out; that’s why it’s so imperative to have a multilayered security approach that cuts them off at every avenue,” said Shields.

Hubbard agreed with Shields stating, “It’s no longer viable to rely on traditional security methods alone; crime is becoming more sophisticated and banking security has to follow suit to protect the bottom line.”
