Is this the year of the smart home? If so, it looks like security and home control are two of the driving forces.
According to a new research report by Parks Associates, about 64 percent of the smart devices currently in the home are part of security or home control systems.
The report, Evolution of Smart Home and the Internet of Things, includes data from a Q1 2014 survey, which featured 10,000 U.S. broadband households.
The smart devices mentioned in the study include a wide range of products, from lighting controls and security cameras to programmable thermostats, motorized door controls, and much more.
According to Parks? findings, over one-third of smart thermostats in the homes surveyed were purchased as stand-alone products. That calculates to about 34 percent, the highest percentage among all smart products listed. Honeywell is leading this product category, accounting for about 25 percent of all smart thermostats in U.S. homes. GE topped the list for smart lighting products.
Another interesting tidbit that came out of the study is that almost 4 percent of U.S. households will have some type of smart home controller by the end of the year. Those numbers are expected to increase to nearly 6 percent by 2015.
