Firetide Wireless Mesh Network To Deliver Real-time Video Surveillance For Malaysia MRT In Kuala Lumpur

As part of an economic revitalization project started in 2010, Malaysia is embarking on the largest transportation mobility project in its history. LG CNS will lead the effort, and selected Firetide’s self-healing mesh networking technology to deliver wireless real-time video capabilities at speeds of more than 150km/h. This system will provide train operators the visibility needed to keep passengers and operations safe as well as the reliable high-speed Internet access passengers now demand.

A high-bandwidth wireless mesh access network by Firetide Inc., the technology leader in private wireless broadband networks, has been selected by global IT service provider LG CNS to deliver real-time video capabilities for Malaysia MRT. The project, one of the largest transportation mobility projects in the country’s history, will cost an estimated 120 million US to construct and will include 31 complete station communications systems, video, security, broadcasting, command and control and onboard wireless Internet access. It’s slated for completion in 2015.

“Firetide technology solutions have already proven effective for large transportation mobility projects, such as Seoul MRT,” said LG CNS Project Manager, Mr.Do Hyunsu. “The ability to have access to real-time video will greatly enhance operational performance and safety system-wide.”

The Firetide solution will include 600 HotPort® 7020 outdoor wireless mesh nodes, delivering more than 100Mbps of throughput to effectively support high-definition video feeds as well as seamless hand-offs at high speeds. Built with Firetide’s patented AutoMesh™ flow-based routing protocol, the technology supports advanced load balancing and congestion control mechanisms for optimal routing within the mesh network. The HotPort 7020 mesh infrastructure also provides extensive VLAN capabilities critical for deploying a multi-service network on a large scale.

To provide reliable Wi-Fi access to passengers, the Malaysia MRT system will also include 130 HotPoint 5200 Tri-band Dual Radio wireless access points. Their modular design enables full network and software integration into the Firetide wireless mesh network while permitting independent physical placement of the hardware to provide optimal accessibility for Wi-Fi clients. HotPoint 5200 access points feature rugged NEMA 4X/IP67-rated cast aluminum enclosures and one weatherproof connector for attaching to a Firetide wireless mesh node.

Currently, line #1 in Kuala Lumpur – covering 51 km and 31 stations – is under construction. The system is expected to be fully operational in 2015, with other lines to be added in the future.
