The 1280 × 1024 Boson SX8 and Boson SX8-CZ 15–75 deliver optimized size, weight, and power with high-performance thermal imaging

Teledyne FLIR OEM has introduced the Boson® SX8, the first NDAA-compliant, volume-production uncooled longwave infrared (LWIR) thermal camera module to combine an 8-micron pixel pitch with SXGA (1280 × 1024) resolution. Designed for defense and industrial applications where size, weight, and power (SWaP) are critical, the new module delivers four times the resolution of conventional VGA thermal cameras while maintaining a compact form factor.

The ITAR-free Boson SX8 family enables users to detect, identify, and track objects at greater distances while preserving the compact footprint required for modern platforms. The camera is intended for applications including uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), counter-UAS operations, perimeter security, handheld imaging devices, seekers, visual augmentation systems, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

Advanced 8-Micron Pixel Technology

The Boson SX8 utilizes a next-generation 8-micron pixel architecture that reduces pixel area by 55% compared to the standard 12-micron LWIR format. This innovation allows significantly higher image resolution and thermal performance without increasing the camera’s overall size.

According to Paul Clayton, President of Teledyne FLIR OEM, the technology marks a significant advancement in thermal imaging by providing greater situational awareness and extended operational range while maintaining SWaP efficiency and supply-chain reliability.

Boson SX8-CZ 15–75 Continuous-Zoom Variant

Alongside the standard module, Teledyne FLIR OEM introduced the Boson SX8-CZ 15–75, which integrates a factory-calibrated 5x continuous-zoom lens system.

The integrated 15–75 mm continuous-zoom lens offers:

  • Focus-through-zoom capability
  • Thermal gradient compensation
  • Factory alignment and calibration
  • Optimized optical performance
  • Single-source warranty coverage

This integrated design helps reduce system integration complexity and accelerates deployment timelines for OEM customers.

Designed For Production-Scale Deployment

Manufactured in the United States, the Boson SX8 family is designed for high-volume production and provides OEMs with a streamlined path from prototype development to full-rate manufacturing.

The camera modules also integrate with Teledyne FLIR OEM’s Prism™ embedded software platform, enabling advanced intelligent imaging capabilities and accelerated product development.

Eurosatory 2026 Demonstration

Teledyne FLIR OEM will showcase the Boson SX8 product family during Eurosatory 2026 in Paris, where attendees will be able to experience the company’s latest SWaP-optimized thermal imaging technologies.
