Training As a Foundation

By Jerry Lenander

A constant discussion point in the electronic security industry is the need for a robust workforce development program and the critical role in which it plays into producing well-trained technicians.

The advocates are not only the companies performing the installations, but also the manufacturers of the security products. It is in their best interest that the installation of their products is effective, supports customer satisfaction and promotes positive brand association.  In addition, a market with a comprehensive training program can lead the way to meet ever-changing technology.

At a conference where training was the primary topic, Wayne Moore, who was a principal member and chair of NFPA 72, Chapter 24, NFPA 909 and NFPA 914, listened to the discussion.  The main objection from the audience was the cost, and concern about retaining an employee.  “What if I invest in training, and they just leave for another job?”

“What if they don’t leave,” was the response from Moore.

Years ago, a company owner sent all of her technicians to a three-day in-person course we offered, whether they were new hires or twenty-plus year veterans. When asked why, she responded that while all technicians had the ability to do an installation, she wanted a foundation of training so that all of them could provide a uniform level of service and maintenance on all their installations.

As we look to add training as part of the Global Electronic Security Forum, we’ve recently launched The National Training Program (NTP) Level 1 Low Voltage Technician course – which provides the kind of foundational training that’s well suited for an evolving industry.

The course is delivered in 36 hours of online, self-paced coursework covering intrusion, fire alarm, video, access control and networking.  At its completion, each student will exit the course with a certificate of completion.
