The city says damage from vandalism has cost the city around $40,000. The City of Calgary is installing new security cameras at three city parks in order to crack down on vandalism.

The cameras are set up in River Park, Sandy Beach, and Britannia Slopes Park – three popular off-leash areas in southwest Calgary.

Ward 11 Councilman Brian Pincott says the vandalism started when the city put up fences last summer as part of a park management project.

"It’s been mostly damage to the fences, signs, it’s that kind of thing," he said. "It’s estimated about $40,000 worth of damage."

People who use the park every day say that while the cameras are a violation of privacy, it’s not their main concern.

They are more concerned about the installation of the fences. Construction based on public engagement "I don’t know if there needs to be a watchful eye on the park," said Stephanie Marion. "I think that having a better designed park and more communication with the city, the residents, the people that actually use it, the runners or whoever would have been better."

The city says the park construction is based on recommendations from the city through extensive public engagement.

Some of the work being done involves trails restoration, changes to off-leash area boundaries, and the installation of fencing to protect and restore natural area.
