Can Apple Transfer Its Elegance To Secure Biometrics And Access Control?
With a fresh patent in hand this week for facial recognition, a fingerprint reader on its iPhone 5 and a new $345 million acquisition of 3D-sensor company PrimeSense , Apple seems to be putting some serious body english on the user interface. Apple facial recognition device touchID primesense Exhibit 1 from Apple’s Facial Recognition patent. No. 124 points to an "image sensor" behind the screen. Is Apple gunning to re-define interacting (re: authentication) and interfacing with computers, devices – and ultimately "things" in the computing environment at large? And will it re-set expectations for security, as well as, for innovation and convenience? Apple’s newest patent awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office points to a sophisticated array of biometric and gesture-based inputs across a range of devices and vertical industries. If that is the case (the company isn’t saying), can Apple’s pedigree for elegant design overcome fickle user acceptance and current shortcomings in biometric technology and lap the field? "The state of play today in consumer biometrics security is pretty primitive," said Steve Wilson, vice president and principal analyst at Constellation Research. "In security, we’re accustomed to rigorous standards and testing; lots of peer review; all encryption algorithms being published. But with biometrics we still don’t have agreed upon test protocols." Wilson said consumer biometrics is all about convenience and has very little to do with serious security. Apple found that out first hand when the Touch ID fingerprint reader on the new iPhone 5 was hacked shortly after […]

Facial Recognition Software Changes The Face Of British Retail And Advertising
Tesco’s have revealed that it will be installing facial recognition software in 450 of its petrol station forecourts. This software, displayed as a digital screen, will be located by the checkouts and aims to identify whether individuals in the queue are male or female, takes a rough estimate of how old they are and how long they have been looking at the displayed advertisements. The information gathered is thought to be around 97% correct. The overall aim of this is to process the details in real time and send the information to advertisers so they can tailor the adverts to appropriate times of day. For instance, coffee could be advertised in the morning and then the ads can switch to other relevant products throughout the day. This software is also advanced enough to monitor who is in the queue and who isn’t. If it detects that the majority is female then the adverts being shown will switch to adverts tailored to women. The same goes if there were mostly men detected. This technology is being provided by Amscreen, Lord Sugar’s company. The system is called ‘Optimeyes’ which is from a French company known as Quividi. Tesco aims to install this software in their stores as soon as possible. This can seem quite alarming, however according to an article in the Telegraph no video footage is actually recorded. Once your face has been scanned for its information you as an individual are erased. So no facial database is stored, only […]

US Government Intel Researchers ?Radically Rxpand? Facial Recognition Capabilities
Spencer Platt / Getty Images / AFP The United States intelligence community’s research arm is set to launch a program that will thoroughly broaden the capabilities of biometric facial recognition software in order to establish an individual’s identity. The Janus program of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency (IARPA) will begin in April 2014 in an effort to “radically expand the range of conditions under which automated face recognition can establish identity,” according to documents released by the agency over the weekend. Janus “seeks to improve face recognition performance using representations developed from real-world video and images instead of from calibrated and constrained collections. During daily activities, people laugh, smile, frown, yawn and morph their faces into a broad variety of expressions. For each face, these expressions are formed from unique skeletal and musculature features that are similar through one’s lifetime. Janus representations will exploit the full morphological dynamics of the face to enable better matching and faster retrieval.” Current facial recognition relies mostly on full-frontal, aligned facial views. But, in the words of Military & Aerospace Electronics, Janus will fuse “the rich spatial, temporal, and contextual information available from the multiple views captured by security cameras, cell phone cameras, news video, and other sources referred to as ‘media in the wild.’” In addition, Janus will take into account aging and incomplete or ambiguous data for its recognition assessment goals. IARPA was created in 2006 and is a division of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The […]

NIST, University of Texas Researchers Say There?s More To Image-based Biometric Recognition Than Faces Alone
facialrecognition2 November 8, 2013 – A new study published in the journal of Psychological Science by researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas and the National Institute of Standards and Technologies could turn our understanding of facial recognition on its head. The research describes a series of experiments that demonstrates there is potentially more information for biometrics-based identity recognition in images of people than the face alone. Specifically, the recognition study used three types of images for comparison: a subject’s face and upper body (left); only the face (center); and the upper body with the face masked (right). Results suggest that automatic recognition systems could be improved by adding body information beyond the face. “For twenty years, the assumption in the automatic face recognition community has been that all important identity information is in the face,” Jonathon Phillips, an electronics engineer at NIST who is a co-author on the study said. “These results should point us toward exploring new ways to improve automatic recognition systems by incorporating information about the body beyond the face.” In a series of experiments, the researchers showed study participants pairs of images of either the same or different people and asked them to determine if the photos matched or not. The images selected for the study were chosen from a database used in the NIST Face Recognition Vendor Test 2006 , an international competition of face recognition systems conducted by NIST. The study team selected a subset of the image pairs that automated face […]

Can Facial Recognition Really Tell If A Kid Is Learning In Class?
engage sense facial recognition Can cameras read what’s going on in a second grader’s mind? Photo courtesy of EngageSense All of us have had a teacher who had eyes in the back of his or her head. Even while facing the blackboard, they saw everything—every note being passed, every answer being copied, every face being made. Or at least it seemed that way. All they really had to do was guess right a few times about what was going on behind their backs and, well, that is how classroom legends are made. But what if you took all the guessing out of the picture? What if cameras focused on every kid in the class? That’s what a New York company named SensorStar Labs has in mind, although the point would not be to catch miscreants, but rather to help teachers determine when they’ve lost the class. Face time Here’s how it would work. Using facial recognition software called EngageSense, computers would apply algorithms to what the cameras have recorded during a lecture or discussion to interpret how engaged the students have been. Were the kids’ eyes focused on the teacher? Or were they looking everywhere but the front of the class? Were they smiling or frowning? Or did they just seem confused? Or bored? Teachers would be provided a report that, based on facial analysis, would tell them when student interest was highest or lowest. Says SensorStar co-founder Sean Montgomery, himself a former teacher: “By looking at maybe just […]

CaughtOnCamera: Ex-Con Nabbed For Attempted Rape; Facial Recognition Used
By Tina Moore / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Wednesday, October 16, 2013, 4:26 PM This surveillance footage showed the suspect shortly after the robbery and attempted rape of the NYU student on Oct. 8 in SoHo. An ex-con who just got out of prison in July was arrested Wednesday for the attempted rape and robbery of a 20-year-old NYU student in SoHo, authorities told the Daily News. Glenn Williams was nabbed after authorities used facial recognition technology, according to a report. He was taken into custody at 11th Ave. and W. 15th St. and later charged with attempted rape, robbery, sex abuse and asault. Williams was jailed in 2011 for criminal possession of a weapon, and received a two-to-four year sentence, officials said. He was conditionally released from Riverview Correctional Facility on July 8. RELATED: NYU STUDENT ROBBED, ALMOST RAPED: COPS Exactly three months later, the 28-year-old grabbed the woman and put her in a chokehold as she was walking along Thompson St. between Spring and Prince Sts. at about 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 8, cops said. Williams, who lives in Scarsdale, tried to rape her but she managed to break free, cops said. The sicko then fled with her bag, leaving the woman with facial injuries. Surveillance video obtained by cops shows the man believed to be the suspect walking into a building with a bag that looked like the woman’s. MasterCard Joins FIDO Alliance March To Standardize Biometric Authorization And Other Alternatives
Danielle Walker, Reporter October 09, 2013 Plans include an open standard that would shrink users’ dependency on passwords. Plans include an open standard that would shrink users’ dependency on passwords. MasterCard has joined forces with an organization that aims to eliminate consumers’ dependency on passwords and PINs for authentication. Last Wednesday, USA Today broke the news that the global payment processor planned to become a member of the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance, which was formed in 2012 by online transaction giant PayPal and a number of other companies to embrace innovative solutions for verifying users’ identities. By early 2014, the FIDO Alliance plans to introduce specifications for an open protocol standard for two-factor and multifactor authentication . The specifications would support biometric technologies, such as fingerprint scanners, voice and facial recognition, and other authentication measures, including one-time passwords (OTP) and near-field communication (NFC), a wireless technology that establishes communication between mobile devices through physical contact. In April, Google joined the FIDO Alliance. Now with the addition of MasterCard, the organization gains another power player in the industry that could give weight to its mission. On Tuesday, Brennen Byrne, CEO of Clef, an Oakland, Calif.-based mobile authentication startup, told SCMagazine.com that MasterCard’s participation in FIDO was a positive step. “The industry in general is looking for new ways to improve [methods] of authenticating,” Byrne said. “So it’s not surprising to me that MasterCard is joining on and taking the FIDO Alliance seriously,” he continued, adding later that “it’s good […]

Embracing The Police Force Of The Future
(CNN) – Contrary to the Hollywood image in movies like “Minority Report,” technology hasn’t served law enforcement particularly well over the years. Fragmented and complex operating systems have challenged police officers to manually enter information into multiple programs. And yet officers still struggle to retrieve the information they need — especially in the field, where it can be a matter of life or death. A large number of law enforcement agencies are still hindered by antiquated technologies. But agencies that have upgraded their operating and investigative systems have been tremendously effective in ensuring the safety of their citizens. Police forces like the Guardia Civil in Spain and An Garda Siochana in Ireland were early technology adopters and now benefit from some of the most efficient police operations and investigative systems in the world. These are the police forces of the future — the ones that others will be modeling themselves after in the years to come. Accenture recently studied police forces from around the world and found that in every region, police are hungry for new technology. They see tech such as analytics, biometrics (identification of humans by their characteristics or traits) and facial recognition as keys to effectively fighting crime and maximizing the time officers spend in the field. Despite the reality of reduced budgets, law enforcement agencies that adopt new technologies can prevent crimes more effectively and solve crimes faster. Video analytics What many people don’t know is that there’s a solid infrastructure of closed-circuit TV in […]
