Darnell Barton spotted the woman, who had climbed over a guardrail and stood leaning over traffic along the motorway below, whilst he was driving a bus packed with schoolchildren. He stopped his bus, opened the door and asked if she needed help, as can be seen in security camera footage from aboard the vehicle.

The bus video system captured the woman looking back at Mr Barton, 37, as he came to her assistance. Mr Barton took hold of the woman and asked if she wanted to come back over the rail. She had remained silent up until that point, but said yes. He then sat next to her, asking her name and other questions to distract her.
