Surveillance Cameras Keep Watch In Mountain Brook, AL

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Alabama – – Walk around nearly any city and you’ll notice. You’ll notice them watching you, recording your actions, tracking your comings and goings. In this day and age, security cameras are part of everyday life. So much so, that for the most part, we barely even notice them. It’s almost safe to assume they’re always there. Here at AL.com, we wanted to know: Who’s Watching You? In Mountain Brook at least, several city departments utilize cameras–though perhaps not the one’s you’d expect to. "The Public Works facility has 21 cameras that are used for security," said Public Works Director Ronnie Vaughn. The facility, located at 3579 East Street in Cahaba Heights, houses Mountain Brook’s Right of Way and Traffic Division, Heavy Construction Division, Fleet Management Division, and Forestry Division. For now, said Vaughn, the number of cameras that help keep the building safe are "adequate." "I see no need to increase the number," he said. Quieter areas, like the city’s parks, for example, currently lack security cameras. Shanda Williams, Parks/Recreation Superintendent , said the city currently does not have any cameras installed at the various parks. There are some, however, at the Parks and Recreation facility that she believes are "very useful." "Besides security reasons" said Williams, "they can be used to keep track of employees coming and going." Williams said that along with the cameras, a handy monitoring system allows her to rewind the video and record segments that can be used for evidence. "I […]

At Maryland Live Casino, Relentless Surveillance Operation Targets Cheats, Thieves

Behind an unmarked door, the secret surveillance bunker in the bowels of Maryland’s largest casino was humming with activity. A manager on the gambling floor at Maryland Live had called in some suspicious behavior from one of the table-game pits, and the surveillance supervisor was blurting camera numbers like a quarterback calling an audible. Radios were crackling, and automated announcements were piped into the room every time a secured door opened on the massive Arundel Mills property. But the focus was on the bank of 42-inch monitors at the front of the room. The surveillance team was quickly trying to determine whether a customer’s odd behavior indicated cheating or . . . something else. “See that?” a surveillance operative asked. “I don’t know,” another one said, staring at the screens on the wall. The eyes in the sky never blink at Maryland Live, where officials are nearly as obsessive — and surreptitious — about spycraft as their neighbors at the National Security Agency. And for good reason. Every month hundreds of thousands of gamblers stream into the casino, leaving behind more than $50 million in revenue. Protecting that gold mine from thieves, cheats, drunks and other threats: a security force of 200 officers and a separate state-of-the-art surveillance operation. At Maryland Live, they’re always watching, pan-tilt-zooming, searching for wrongdoing in a place where somebody, somewhere is probably doing something they shouldn’t — usually at the expense of the casino’s bottom line. More than 1,200 cameras in and around the casino are […]

ICE License Plate Tracking Plan Withdrawn Amid Outcry About

Blank Hawaii License Plate Related Content (CNN) — Homeland security officials on Wednesday abruptly shelved a proposal to build a national database of license-plate scans after criticism from privacy advocates. The proposal, which had been posted online last week by the office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, sought a contractor who could establish a searchable database of license plates, with the times and locations where they were spotted by traffic cameras and other sources. But in a statement late Wednesday, the department announced a reversal. “The solicitation, which was posted without the awareness of ICE leadership, has been canceled,” said spokeswoman Gillian Christensen. “While we continue to support a range of technologies to help meet our law enforcement mission, this solicitation will be reviewed to ensure the path forward appropriately meets our operational needs.” It was unclear whether the proposal was dead or was merely withdrawn for revisions. Under the proposal, officers in the field would have been able to use their smartphones to look up a license plate and see every time and every place the vehicle had been spotted by a camera. “The database should track vehicle license plate numbers that pass through cameras or are voluntarily entered into the system from a variety of sources (access control systems, asset recovery specialists, etc.) and uploaded to share with law enforcement,” the original solicitation read. The proposed National License Plate Recognition database was to have been used by immigration officers to find and arrest fugitives. Supporters of license-plate […]

Department Of Homeland Security Seeks Technology To Create License Plate Database

Catherine Herridge is reporting today on privacy concerns over the federal government’s apparent push to track license plates as a way to find fugitive undocumented immigrants. License Plate Readers: Keeping Us Safe or Violating Our Privacy? Here’s more from Fox News Latino : The federal agency tasked with arresting and deporting undocumented immigrants, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, put out an official request last week for contractors to submit bids for commercial technology that would help the agency its law enforcement officers tap into the National License Plate Recognition Database, or NLPR. “The database should track vehicle license plate numbers that pass through cameras or are voluntarily entered into the system from a variety of sources (access control systems, asset recovery specialists, etc.) and uploaded to share with law enforcement," the request for proposals stated ."NLPR information will be used by DHS/ICE to assist in the location and arrest of absconders and criminal aliens.” The technology that ICE wants developed for the agency would allow agents to use smart phones to quickly snap a photo of a license plate and quickly determine the plate is on a "hot list" of "target vehicles." License plate readers, however, would automatically record information on all vehicles that cross their paths instead of just suspect vehicles. "This system is supposed to be for the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement branch of DHS, for the tracking of illegal immigrants," said J.J. Green, a national security correspondent in Washington D.C. for WTOP radio. The ACLU […]

Fort McDowell Casino Finds Its VMS Partner In DW Spectrum

Operated by Arizona’s Yavapai Nation, Fort McDowell Casino has traveled a long and winding road in its quest to convert from analog to IP. Courtesy of Fort McDowell Casino Since opening the first bingo hall in Arizona in 1983, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation has expanded to become the Fort McDowell Resort and Casino, comprising 128,000 square feet of slot machines, a 1,800-seat bingo hall, 18 blackjack tables and 20 pocket tables, as well as a number of food and beverage venues, a golf course and a resort hotel. Security for gaming and back-of-house areas is overseen by the Fort McDowell Tribal Gaming Office (FMTGO), which has maintained and fully provisioned surveillance coverage and compliance prior to each expansion initiative. The sometimes volatile growth has fostered a strong DIY culture with regard to surveillance, leading the tribe to embrace a culture of system design and full systems integration capabilities. As a result, FMTGO surveillance techs and management are routinely called upon to design, source, build and install off-site camera systems and other low-voltage solutions for nearby locations including courtrooms, schools, community centers and mobile safety buildings. All of these projects are provided without using local integrators for design and labor services, and the only interaction with surveillance providers is confined to equipment orders only. In 2004, following management changes, FMTGO accepted a proposal from a local systems integrator to convert the existing system from VCR to DVR recording — the first time the tribe diverged from its […]

A Watchful Eye In Hospitals

Neil Webb HANOVER, N.H. — DESPITE the intensely personal moments that happen in hospitals, patient privacy can be elusive. Hospitals are multimillion-dollar corporations that look like shopping malls and function like factories. Doctors knock on exam room doors to signal they are about to enter — not to ask permission. The curtain that encircles the hospital bed always lets in a crack of light. Yet we do expect some degree of privacy in hospitals. We trust doctors with our secrets in part because they take a 2,000-year-old Hippocratic oath to respect our privacy, an oath enforced by laws like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act . But sometimes, doctors have to weigh patients’ privacy against their health and safety, and that’s when things get complicated. The use of video monitoring — covert or disclosed, of patients or providers — has proliferated as high-quality, inexpensive technology has become increasingly accessible. The possibilities range from watching elderly patients at risk of falling in their rooms to recording doctors and nurses at sinks to make sure they’re washing their hands. My hospital, where I am chairman of the bioethics committee, recently wrestled with the question of where patient and family privacy ends. Nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit (N.I.C.U.) worried that a premature infant, whom I’ll call Rickie to protect his identity, was being harmed by his parents. Rickie had been released a week earlier from our hospital to a penniless couple in their early 20s whom Child Protection Services […]

Progress Made On Freeport IL Public Safety Plan

FREEPORT – Thirty-two gas stations and retail shops that sell tobacco have installed video cameras in an effort to help police reduce crime. The surveillance camera initiative is among several public safety initiatives rolled out last year by Mayor Jim Gitz’s administration. Aldermen discussed progress that’s been made and remaining goals to tackle in the year ahead at a Committee of the Whole meeting Monday. The public safety plan aims to reduce crime by creating safer neighborhoods, promoting personal accountability, developing stronger community relationships, creating safe housing, fostering interdepartmental cooperation in distribution of city resources and making sound, data-driven decisions. Aldermen raised the majority of their questions Monday about the safer neighborhoods goal, which involves tobacco licensing, street lights and pole cameras and a K-9 program. The Police Department has implemented a program for licensing of tobacco merchants in order to hold them accountable for maintenance and operation of security cameras in their stores. "The program that we’re implementing does two things: it gives us a licensing framework in which we can say, ‘Look, this isn’t working. You need to fix it,’ the same way we do with liquor," Gitz said. "The second thing it does is give us – finally – a tool that we also can utilize for the surveillance cameras. Most of these stores, they don’t have good surveillance, which is a far bigger problem than who has what cigarettes." Deputy Police Chief Jim Drehoble has visited retail outlets throughout the city to ensure the video […]

New Cameras To Improve Clay Co. School Security

BRAZIL, Ind. – A new video surveillance system is being installed in 15 buildings in the Clay Community Schools Corp. to improve security and make it easier for school officials and police to monitor activities. The district is paying Tech Electronics of Indiana nearly $500,000 to install the high-definition security cameras and software at 10 schools and five district buildings. District director of extended services Mike Howard tells the Tribune-Star ( http://bit.ly/1kHiwcc ) that the changes are designed to keep students and staff "as safe as possible." The cameras will be placed indoors and outdoors but not in classrooms, locker rooms or restrooms. Howard will be able to access the cameras through mobile devices or from his home computer, and police are expected to have access by this summer. ___ Information from: Tribune-Star, http://www.tribstar.com Copyright 2014 Scripps Media, Inc. Boulder Police Secretly Install Surveillance Cameras On Municipal Campus Between City Hall, Library

BOULDER, Colo. – Some Boulder residents are questioning their police department’s decision to install surveillance cameras in the park area between city hall and the public library, without letting the public know. The city quietly placed two cameras on the municipal building and one on the library in early January. When asked about the secrecy, Boulder Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kobel said, "The reason those cameras were installed is because we have an ongoing criminal investigation in the area." Kobel gave few details about the investigation, but did say police have received numerous complaints about criminal behavior, including assault, threatening behavior, urinating in public and drug dealing. "In some cases, we have drug dealing to high school students," she said. The cameras have touched a raw nerve with some residents, especially those who hang out in the public space. "They’re violating our rights and our freedom," said Bailey Flood. When asked if it would have made a difference if the city had been upfront about the cameras, Flood replied, "No, it’s an invasion of privacy." Not everyone looks at it that way. "They’re fine," said Jeff Swann, who admits that he drinks regularly while sitting on a park bench in front of City Hall. "Cameras are a part of life." Swann says he’s observed a lot of criminal behavior in the park. "There was a big fight here two or three days ago," he said. "It was a real live brawl. It lasted five minutes. Both guys were […]

College Leaders Work To Keep Students Safe By Improving Security

College leaders say that whenever an incident happens, they try to dig deeper into how they could have responded better, and what could have been done to prevent the situation. “>
College leaders say that whenever an incident happens, they try to dig deeper into how they could have responded better, and what could have been done to prevent the situation.
GRAND TRAVERSE CO. — The staff at Northwestern Michigan College are working hard to continue keeping their students safe after a recent stabbing took place on an on-campus apartment. College leaders say that whenever an incident happens, they try to dig deeper into how they could have responded better, and what could have been done to prevent the situation. "When students come here we want them to be worried about school stuff, studying for tests," said Andy Dolan, Executive Director of NMC Public Relations and Marketing. "We don’t want them to worry about their safety." One of the improvements they’ve made over the years includes the addition of an emergency phone system. 52 phones have been installed ‘throughout the main campus, and off-campus locations and can be spotted with their blue lights. With the touch of a button, students are connected to campus security who can come and assist them when they feel they are in danger. The college also uses an emergency alert system through text message, email, and by classroom phones that alert students and staff to emergencies. Most recently, the campus has added locks to […]

9/11 Conspiracy Theorist Snuck Past Super Bowl Security To Interrupt Postgame Show

The NFL’s layers of security at Super Bowl XLVIII proved vulnerable to an expired festival pass and some social engineering. During MVP Malcolm Smith’s postgame appearance, independent journalist and conspiracy theorist Matthew Mills rushed the stage and grabbed the microphone, exhorting viewers to investigate the truth about 9/11. Mills wasn’t just hijacking a press conference, though: he had infiltrated a stadium that law enforcement hoped would be all but impenetrable. Before the event, police and the FBI had set up multiple layers of security in an attempt to identify potential terrorists, mixing plainclothes agents into the crowd and setting up hundreds of temporary security cameras in Midtown Manhattan to catch suspicious activity… Continue reading… via The Verge – All Posts http://ift.tt/1dYlJLT

Minnesota Company Played A Big Role In Super Bowl 48 Security

Created: 02/02/2014 11:20 PM KAALtv.com (ABC 6 News) — NFL officials took great effort in making sure the 80,000 fans were safe at the Super Bowl 48 Sunday in New Jersey. And a Minnesota company played a big role in keeping everyone safe. Twenty security cameras were strategically placed at the MET Life Stadium’s parking lot, surroundings and nearby hotels to help keep deter crime and terrorism. Thanks to Steve Dunker of Mobile Pro System based out of West Saint Paul whose company made mobile trailer units that power the cameras atop thirty foot masts. The trailers use generators, solar panels, and even wind to power cameras, lights and radar for months. This technology is also used at construction sites, mines, and by the U.S. Navy. Separately, Mobile Pro Systems also says the University of Minnesota is evaluating whether the systems might also prevent or reduce crime on campus.

Sea-Tac Security Cam Captures Man Running Toward Tarmac

Sea-Tac security cam captures man running toward tarmac SEATAC, Wash. – Security camera video obtained by KOMO News shows how a man was able to walk through a restricted emergency exit and make his way toward the tarmac at Sea-Tac Airport. The security breach happened Jan. 9 between gates 2 and 3 in Sea-Tac’s D concourse. An airport spokesperson says the mentally ill man opened a glass door exit that leads to stairs, which lead to the tarmac. Baggage handlers noticed the man and tackled him when he tried to run away from the terminal. Police arrested the suspect and took him to the King County Jail. They did not release his name or age. He was not armed and did not make any verbal threats. Officials say he had a ticket and made it through security with no problem. The incident raises questions about security breaches at the airport and whether passengers should be concerned. "By tackling him they were obviously on point about what they needed to do," said Annie Salonen. "If for some reason someone does get past that then they’ll be taken care of." Port of Seattle Police Chief Colleen Wilson said while her officers are ready to react quickly to any threat, all employees are expected to challenge anybody who appears to be in a restricted area without authorization. She applauds what the baggage handlers did. "It’s a really great example of the multiple layers of security we have built in here at the […]

With Better Security Technology, Hotels Shore Up Blind Spots

Ben Thiele, assistant general manager at the Hotel Monaco Seattle, adjusting a basement security camera. Stuart Isett for The New York Times At a poker tournament in Barcelona last September, Jens Kyllönen, a professional player, said that his room at Hotel Arts was broken into and malware was installed on his computer to transmit anything he saw on his screen as he played. Despite video camera systems and electronic key card entry logs, no one was caught. Although he said he discovered the malware in time, he says he is much more careful now about where he stores his belongings and secures his computer. Hotel Arts declined to comment, saying it was a private event. His case is just one in what has become a technological cat-and-mouse game between hotels and criminals. Smaller and cheaper cameras, smarter key card systems and communication among hotels add up to a more closely watched environment than in the past. Criminals are also using new technology to foil security measures and execute scams. Cameras are typically installed in public spaces like lobbies and hallways, said H. Skip Brandt, executive director of the International Lodging Safety and Security Association in Boston, and director of security at a hotel in downtown Boston. The numbers of those monitored public spaces are multiplying as video cameras and systems come down in price and increase in power. Advanced closed-circuit video systems provide “low-light vision, facial recognition, and movement and color recognition analysis software,” said Tom McElroy, a partner […]

Oakland Privacy Activists Threaten To Sue The City To Stop Surveillance Project

Captain Darren Allison addressed the League of Women Voters forum last week on the DAC. A coalition of activists opposed to the construction of Oakland’s Domain Awareness Center say they’re ready to take the city to court to stop the controversial surveillance project. Brian Hofer, a lawyer working with the Oakland Privacy Working Group, is delivering a letter to Mayor Jean Quan, the city council, the city administrator, and the city attorney today. The letter states that the group will "seek judicial relief" to halt the project. Hofer and his clients claim that the planned contractor to carry out work on Phase 2 of the DAC, Schneider Electric, is also a nuclear weapons contractor, and that hiring the company would violate Oakland’s Nuclear Weapons Free Zone Ordinance. The Express reported on November 19, 2013 that all of the contractors under consideration for the contract to build the DAC were linked to nuclear weapons work , but that Schneider Electric seemed to have only indirect contracts, providing security cameras to a Navy nuclear weapons facility. Since then the Oakland Privacy Working Group uncovered detailed evidence of what they say is Schneider Electric’s close work with military and US Energy Department agencies that design, build, and deploy nuclear weapons systems. The letter delivered to the city today includes a photocopy of Schneider Electric marketing materials in which the company describes itself as a "global specialist" in "weapon launching control system for nuclear submarines," and "nuclear weapons handling systems." The activists have […]
