According to the FTC, there are approximately 10 million identity theft victims every year. Every minute about 19 people fall victim to identity theft. If anyone has ever broke into your digital safe, you know how frustrating the ordeal can be. A team of Georgia Tech students want to bring something straight out of a sci-fi fantasy with their vein-scanning identification device.

Their startup, Ample Biometrics, could change the authentication and identification industries forever. We recently chatted with one of the company’s co-founders to learn more.

Founded by Electrical Engineering Majors Dylan Slack, Eric Bukowski, Janai Ramakrishnan, Donnya Ajdari, and Aditya Somani, “Ample Biometrics is a vein-scanning identification device that can replace your wallet, keys and passwords,” explains Slack. “We are integrating the advanced concept of vein-scanning with simple software so that anyone from corporations to students can integrate the power of secure biometrics into their own applications.”

“We are solving identification and authentication related problems such as credit card fraud, password theft, time fraud, and lost keys. Typical biometric products are hard to integrate, but our product can be integrated into any application by anyone with even the most basic programming experience,” he continues.

“We are ultimately trying to pioneer biometrics-as-a-service (Baas), which can have a large impact on the authentication and identification industry. Simply scan your hand in order to purchase something, log into a website, or open your front door.”

“I went to Las Vegas for my 21st birthday and somebody somehow gained access to my financial information. They emptied my bank account two months afterwards, so I looked into biometrics as a solution to credit card fraud,” recalls slack. “My team and I discovered the benefits of vein-scanning and how it can apply to a multitude of other identity-related problems. Unlike our competitors, we are building both the hardware and the accompanying software. By building a complete system, we can provide a biometrics service that can truly become widespread across multiple industries.”

Slack and his team started this project as a part of Georgia Tech’s Capstone Design Expo. “Atlanta is the birthplace of our company and also the home of our first few customers. Ample Biometrics will always hold a special relationship with Atlanta because of that.”
