Firetide Wireless Mesh Network To Deliver Real-time Video Surveillance For Malaysia MRT In Kuala Lumpur

A few weeks back, we told you about Bands Banding Together, a project being undertaken at Welcome to 1979, the studio complex owned and operated by Chris Mara (who also records the Upstairs at United sessions; go enjoy some video from the Cults and Bobby Rush sessions that went live last week, including the best non-Beatles version of "Come Together" I’ve heard yet). If you recall, Bands Banding Together began with an open call for participants interested in doing a live-to-lathe recording — as in direct-to-vinyl, zero undo, don’t screw up the last song or you have to do the whole thing over recording — who could register through Feb. 15. The next phase is a Facebook poll to determine who will get to participate in the project, and the ’79 camp tells us that the poll is live now! Of the 10 finalists, the five who receive the most votes will be making a unique direct-to-disc LP later this year. There’s a decent range of styles among the finalists, and a fairly broad geographic spread; three are Nashville bands, and the rest are from all across the eastern half of the U.S. Your Finalists: – East Side Americana pickers Don Gallardo and How Far West – Music City pan-American punks Max and The Wild Things – Northampton, Mass., folk rocker Jamie Kent , who hits my ear like The Wallflowers – Philadelphia’s Toy Soldiers , a little less country than Promised Land Sound but in similar territory – […]

FirstNet: America’s New Surveillance Network

FirstNet: America’s new surveillance network raises grave privacy concerns While the system has already been tested in a handful of states, and 2014 will likely see it rolled out further. According to a series of presentation slides from December last year, FirstNet will be the “MOST secure wireless network ever built,” sitting entirely separate from the commercially run networks that everyone, including first responders, uses today. This will give FirstNet greater reliability in situations where networks come under extreme pressure, such as when tens of thousands of people contact loved ones during a terrorist attack or natural disaster. It makes sense to have a dedicated network just for first responders during these sorts of events. Thanks to the network being based on the super-fast 4G protocol, it will also allow for a new wave of novel technology. One application is that after ‘tagging’ a disaster victim with a small device, patients’ vital signs can be monitored from a control centre, allowing medical staff to keep an eye on who needs treatment the most at any one time. But FirstNet will also give local law enforcement the ability to take digital “fingerprints from the field,” record and share highquality video, and instantaneously marry these freshly sourced data with others over the network. In the video above, a demonstrator uses facial recognition software on a tablet; finds out if the target is in a linked database, and is immediately provided with a wealth of information on him. Of course, having a […]

Exacq Technologies Networked Storage Servers Offer Unified Video Management

By Brianna Crandall , February 28, 2014— Exacq Technologies , part of the Security Products business unit of Tyco, a global manufacturer of video management system (VMS) software and servers used for video surveillance, has released a new line of networked video storage servers. The new S-Series Enterprise line of networked video storage servers allows users to add extended storage and archived storage to any exacqVision server running the exacqVision Professional or Enterprise Video Management System (VMS) software. This single user interface reduces the complexity and cost of integrating disparate solutions, and gives facilities managers and security professionals one unified VMS solution to administer and monitor the storage and recorders. In addition, S-Series Enterprise servers can be used to archive video from exacqVision Edge Internet protocol (IP) cameras. exacqVision Edge is a full-featured video management system (VMS) that runs directly on compatible IP cameras. By using the S-Series to archive video and audio, users can optimize their network load with scheduled archiving, says Exacq Technologies. The S-Series Enterprise includes flexible, user-defined archiving rules to store critical video and audio longer. Additionally, the S-Series allows users to consolidate video archives from multiple exacqVision recorders to one or more S-Series devices. Users can also reportedly extend their exacqVision storage without the need for an additional recorder. The S-Series Enterprise is expandable to 80 terabytes on enterprise-class hard drives utilizing RAID 5 or 6 for maximum hard drive reliability, adds the company. The S-Series Enterprise servers also include redundant power supplies to significantly […]

The Size Of South Africa?s Network Video Surveillance Equipment Market Surpasses Analog

Condividi According to Josh Woodhouse , Video Surveillance Analyst at IHS “The size of South Africa’s network video surveillance equipment market surpassed the analogue market for the first time in 2012” . With a video surveillance equipment market size of approximately $90 million South Africa is the largest country level market in Africa and amongst the most technologically mature. The data from IHS’ recently published report on the African market for video surveillance equipment shows that in 2012 the transition from analogue to network equipment passed a milestone: for the first time, revenues from network equipment surpassed those from analogue. The market transition will continue with an increasing proportion of future revenues coming from network equipment. However, due to a combination of low economic growth, a weakening Rand and on-going labour disputes in key vertical markets for video surveillance, we remain conservative about the current growth prospects for the video surveillance market in South Africa. Single digit growth is forecast for 2013 and 2014. Not the end of analogue There remains a high installed base of analogue equipment in South Africa. Analogue equipment still accounts for the majority of unit shipments and, unlike other regional markets in Europe or North America, shipments are forecast to grow. In certain vertical markets analogue equipment is likely to remain the technology of choice. The residential sector is one such example: analogue equipment offers a low-cost, easy-to-install solution and each year a high number of cameras are installed by small security professionals covering […]

(NYSE: IHS), a leading global source of critical information and insight. Network products will be responsible for driving the growth of the China video surveillance equipment market within the five-year forecast window. While shipments for China’s total video surveillance equipment are expected to enjoy a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.5 percent from 2012 to 2017, the shipment CAGR for network cameras is projected at double the rate for the same period, topping out at 43.6 percent. High-definition (HD) network cameras will be especially successful with the highest shipment CAGR of all segments, equivalent to a remarkable 56.3 percent. The market will owe its expansive growth to a number of drivers. For one, the incidence of domestic religious and ethnic conflicts has increased, compelling the government to expand its investment into safe-city projects. In another, intelligent traffic systems will make up one of the few applications that can guarantee stable investment returns. Both safe- city applications and traffic monitoring are the two hottest vertical markets in which network products are the prime choice. HD and high-megapixel network cameras, in particular, will be very popular for their […]
