October is the start of the heaviest theft and other crimes season. Most businesses are at risk, retail shows off the latest fashions while electronics, computer and related materials are high on shopping lists, particularly any items that can be quickly re-sold. Between now and the end of the year, inventory levels are at the highest in most industries and stores.
What will be stolen most? Just think of the most desirable products, pick up a magazine, or check on-line for the most featured products and you will have the answer. Jewelry is always high on the list, but smart phones, tablets and laptops are also highly desirable, as are wrist worn exercise monitors and related equipment.
Importers and manufacturers sometimes find that pallets of merchandise go missing. Raw materials such as copper, nickel, zinc, silver, gold and platinum, along with various types of wire are targets.
Medicine is also very high on the easily sold list, as are the perennial favorites cars, led by several Honda models. Electric assisted bikes & scooters are also high on today’s shopping list for thieves. As December approaches, the hottest selling toys, video games, wine & liquor are prime targets for the holidays.
What can be done to eliminate the threat? Frankly, nothing will absolutely guarantee success. The deterrents most used, such as various alarms, video security and electronic article surveillance all help. Caring and attentive employees and of course undercover investigators, will reduce the incidence of theft and help catch perpetrators.
Because experienced thieves look for security measures, including cameras, one successful way to record theft by employees and others is through the use of cameras that they do not see, such as appropriate looking devices that also hold cameras (covert cameras & covert systems).
