ONVIF On Access Control: Profile C

ONVIF , the US-based global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, announced the final release of Profile C, which covers physical access control. Through Profile C, instalers, specifiers and consultants can achieve interoperability between clients and devices of physical access control systems (PACS) and network-based CCTV. With this release, including the availability of the Profile C Test Tool, manufacturers are now able to introduce Profile C conformant products to the market. With Profile C, according to the standards body, compatibility between access control edge devices and clientsmeans installations simplified and training time diminished because of the reduced need for multiple proprietary monitoring systems to handle devices. Profile C conformant devices within the access system provide door and access point information related to basic door control such as locking and unlocking, when a door has been accessed and other door monitoring tasks. Per Björkdahl, Chairman of ONVIF’s Steering Committee, said: “Extending the ONVIF interface into other areas of physical security emphasizes ONVIF’s recognition that systems designers need a consistent interface to enable seamless integration within their security systems . With the release of Profile C for access control, integrators and specifiers can be confident that products bearing the Profile C mark will work together, ultimately enabling a better physical access control solution or integrated access and video system for their clients.” Profile C can also be combined with ONVIF Profile S for video and audio streaming so that users can group related access and video devices, sharing the same […]

Understanding Night Vision Surveillance Cameras

By : Alison Reid    Submitted 2014-03-05 01:10:02 There is really no need to justify the requirement of a security camera. The ones that have the best security systems installed in their homes and offices have security cameras installed as part of these systems. It is one thing being aware of a security system in place and a completely different feeling of security when you can see the action through a security camera. And one shouldn’t just be satisfied with security cameras being installed inside their homes and offices. Today a night vision surveillance camera or an outdoor dome camera is as important. A night vision surveillance camera can be of many types but its primary function is to capture videos outside your home or office even at night. During the daytime such a camera functions like a standard high definition camera but it comes onto its own at night and offers this additional functionality. Night vision as a concept is not new and the first nighttime pictures were captured by Richard Maddox way back in 1871. Today a night vision surveillance camera uses an image intensifier to capture images in low light and in some cases, no light. Even when the light is minimum the lens can focus the photons (light in this case) on the photocathode of the image intensifier. This releases the electrons from the cathode. The electrons are accelerated by an electric field and their speed is increased. There is a microchannel plate with […]

WD Launches Purple Line Of HDDs For Surveillance Market

The higher price usually has a lot more to do with data integrity than it does performance. The surveillance drives targeted for use with always-on cameras and audio recording need to perform consistently with little room for failure due to wear & tear; so they need to have quality moving parts, better tolerance on the manufacturing specs and survive for a higher number of read/writes more so than be fast. I don’t think this is the right solution to that problem. I just put together a security camera system recently. The software supported initially writing the video files in one location, but archiving it in a different location. I so put a SSD and regular HDD in the system. The video received from the cameras is initially written to the SSD. After 3 days it gets archived (in batch) on the HDD. 1) You don’t typically think of SSDs in this particular application – there’s no need for blazing speed. But there is a need for constant concurrent writes to multiple files, which is something SSDs do a lot better than HDDs. I initially decided to go with the SSD because I noticed the computer frequently stuttered and lagged during competing read requests from the original HDD. 2) The HDD only gets written to about 4-6 times a day. At all other times, it goes to sleep. So I just grabbed a consumer "green" drive. The HDD is going to get less use than a home desktop computer HDD. […]
