The PSIA Approves Secure Credential Specification

The Physical Security Interoperability Alliance announced it has approved the Secure Credential Interoperability (SCI) 1.0 specification. The PSIA has been working with a broad group of industry leaders in the access control industry to come up with this specification, which is likely to have a significant influence on the future of secure mobile credentials. Mohammad Soleimani, the Chief Technology Officer of Kastle Systems and the Chairman of the SCI Work Group, introduced this concept to the organization in 2020.

The PSIA Introduces Secure Credential Interoperability Initiative

The Physical Security Interoperability Alliance (PSIA) announced its Secure Credential Interoperability (SCI) initiative and a working group to advance its development. The SCI specification supports NFC, ISO14443, and Bluetooth (BLE) and therefore can accommodate all device types including cards, mobile devices, and wearables. The group has already prepared a draft specification for apps, readers, and locks featuring BLE compatibility.

Don’t Let Hackers Steal Your Personal Identify

Your personal identity (PI) is any identification, presented in numbers, icons or letters, that is used to describe you and only you. Your phone number, email address, Social Security number, and a host of other identifiers distinguish you from your neighbor, a fellow in Sri Lanka or your sister. Using any of the above should help differentiate you from others. Since too many people can have the same name, birth date, password or other descriptors, the above should further discern that it’s you, not somebody else with your PI.

First Cybersecurity Rule When Implementing Card-Based Systems: Encrypt!

It used to be that the most important aspect of implementing an electronic access control system was the simple control of who went where when. Today, the requirements of these sophisticated systems goes beyond. Indeed, one of the security challenges frequently heard surrounds denying hackers, cyber-punks and associated bad actors from utilizing the access system as a gateway to an organization’s sensitive IT network.

How OSDP Will Help Security Professionals

The Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) is a communication standard adopted by the Security Industry Association (SIA) that lets security equipment, such as card and biometric readers from one company interface easily with control panels and equipment from another manufacturer. In other words, OSDP fosters interoperability among security devices. It also adds sophistication and security benefits through features such as bi-directional communication and read/write capabilities.

Access Control System Trends: When Access Control Goes Wireless

If wireless solutions are not on your radar for access control installations, it’s time to take notice of this growing trend in physical security. Such solutions let integrators and end users reap the benefits of a wired system, without the cost of a hardwired system. Implementing a wireless solution often takes less time than its traditional hardwired counterpart. When retrofitting older buildings with new access control systems, wireless systems may literally be the only viable option available.

Surveying Trends in the Security Integration Market

It’s evident that the majority of security installations are becoming more and more complex. No longer content to monitor and manage separate access control, fire alarm, video surveillance, intrusion, and HVAC control systems, corporate security and technology managers want to consolidate and integrate various disconnected security and facility management systems. At a dramatically increasing pace, the Information Technology department is leading the initiative, particularly given the trend toward convergence of physical and logical security systems.
