Google Glass Is Being Beta Tested In New York Police Department
Google Glass is Being Beta Tested in New York Police Department The New York City Police Department ’s intelligence and analytics unit is testing out Google Glass to determine if it’s a fit for investigating terrorists and helping cops catch criminals. According to VentureBeat , the department recently received several pairs of the glasses to beta-test. A Google spokesman told VentureBeat that the NYPD likely got their glasses through the Google Glass Explorer program, where people interested in buying them must apply, and then wait for their application to get accepted or denied. Those who get accepted must then play the $1,500 price tag to acquire them. The NYPD might take advantage of the wireless facial recognition software. Google Glass could help with matching suspects’ faces to information in numerous police databases and federal law enforcement agencies. For example, this would give investigators a way to see a suspect’s criminal record while interviewing them. Various liberty groups have spoken out against the department’s intended usage, as it could potentially violate the privacy rights of innocent citizens, while other law enforcement officials state that the glasses’ ability to “spy” on suspects is limited. However, the NYPD remains optimistic. “We think it could help impact patrol operations in New York City,” one NYC law enforcement official told VentureBeat . “We shall see.” [via Venture Beat ] Stay Connected with Follow Tags: nypd , google , google-glass , beta

CaughtOnCamera: Security Video Of Blazing Meteor
[embedded content] There’s nothing quite like seeing a massive fireball burn through the night’s sky. Much bigger and brighter than a shooting star, these dramatic meteors tend to catch onlookers’ attention. One recent fireball that blazed over Iowa and surrounding states, caused hundreds of wowed residents to call in the sighting to the American Meteor Society. The meteor appeared on December 26 around 5:45pm local time. More than 1,200 people reported the sighting, making it the third most reported fireball in the history of the society’s online reporting system. Some witnesses said the fireball was as bright as the sun, while others noted sonic effects and delayed booms. A few said the meteor’s color ranged from yellow to orange to blue. The fireball was caught on tape by a security camera at the public works facility in North Liberty, Iowa. In the black-and-white video, the meteor can be seen from several different angles as it shines through the sky and at times illuminates the houses and roads below. Earlier this month marked the annual Geminid meteor shower, which is the most vivid of all showers. The Geminid light show is typically full of fireballs, along with more than 100 meteors per hour. This year, the shower kicked off on December 4 and peaked on December 13 and 14. Here is a heat map that shows where people were when they reported seeing the most recent fireball over Iowa: (Credit: American Meteor Society) Other Articles:

Seattle Latest City To Install DHS Surveillance Equipment
Seattle Latest City to Install DHS Surveillance Equipment Add Seattle to the list of local governments taking money from the Department of Homeland Security to put their citizens under federal surveillance. Seattle newspaper The Stranger reports : If you’re walking around downtown while looking at a smartphone, you will probably see at least one — and more likely two or three — Wi-Fi networks named after intersections: “4th&Seneca,” “4th&Union,” “4th&University,” and so on. That is how you can see the Seattle Police Department’s new wireless mesh network, bought from a California-based company called Aruba Networks, whose clients include the Department of Defense, school districts in Canada, oil-mining interests in China, and telecommunications companies in Saudi Arabia. Perhaps wiring the city with high-tech, federally funded surveillance equipment is what Seattle mayor meant when he described the city’s budget as “a moral document. It puts resources behind our vision of the city we want to see.” Apparently, part of those resources are coming from the federal government and they are earmarked for use to putting the city under the vision of the Department of Homeland Security. When pressed for details about his department’s new monitoring agreement with DHS, Seattle Police Department Detective Monty Moss said he “is not comfortable answering policy questions when we do not yet have a policy,” as reported by The Stranger . The paper continues: But, Detective Moss added, the SPD “is actively collaborating with the mayor’s office, city council, law department, and the ACLU on a […]
