SIA Supports Senate’s STOP School Violence Act
The Security Industry Association (SIA) strongly supports S. 2495, the Students, Teachers and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Act of 2018, introduced by a bipartisan coalition of 25 U.S. senators led by Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn. The legislation would fund school security improvements and invest in prevention programs to stop school violence before it happens.

SIA Favors Tax Reform Law For Security And Fire Protection Systems
The Security Industry Association (SIA) led a coalition of industry groups urging negotiators to accept a Senate-backed provision for tax reform to expand deductions under Section 179 of the IRS tax code, which empowers businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment and/or software purchased or financed during the tax year. The revised tax code permanently expands eligibility for deductions to fire protection, alarm, and security systems, along with other equipment, placed in service in 2018 and beyond.
SIA-Led Coalition Urges Congress To Include Business Expensing Reforms In Tax Overhaul
The Security Industry Association (SIA) recently led a group of eight industry associations in urging the House and Senate tax writing committees to strengthen business expensing provisions in the final version of tax overhaul legislation under consideration in Congress. BSIA Forges Closer American Links Ahead Of Brexit
The British Security Industry Association and its American equivalent, the Security Industry Association (SIA), have jointly signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish the foundations of a long-term working relationship in anticipation of closer trade links between the two countries following Brexit and the election of President Trump. Signed by the Chief Executives of both Associations at London’s historic Benjamin Franklin House as part of the SIA’s visit to London last month.
Kathleen Carroll And Craig Sharman Take SIA Chair Positions
During the 2017 SIA GovSummit, SIA Chairman Denis Hebert announced that Kathleen Carroll, Vice President, Government Affairs, HID Global, would assume responsibilities as chair of the Security Industry Association (SIA) Data Privacy Advisory Board. Hebert also announced that Craig Sharman, Director, Federal Government Relations, Johnson Controls Inc., would chair the SIA Government Relations Committee, a position previously held by Carroll.
SIA Establishes SecurityPAC To Bolster Advocacy Efforts
SIA formed SecurityPAC to bolster its advocacy efforts to fully engage within U.S. political process on matters affecting the security industry. The PAC will raise funds solely from SIA members to support candidates for federal office who champion issues important to the industry. And SecurityPAC will support matters pertaining but not limited to issues such as homeland security, cybersecurity, federal procurement and critical infrastructure protection.
SIA Establishes Public Safety Working Group
The Security Industry Association (SIA) announced its establishment of the SIA Public Safety Working Group, chaired by Steve Surfaro, Industry Liaison, Axis Communications. SIA stands up the SIA Public Safety Working Group to develop recommendations to improve the safety, security, and sustainability of cities and communities using technology, said SIA CEO Don Erickson.
Security Industry Association And University Of Phoenix Announce Inaugural SIA Scholarship Recipients
The Security Industry Association (SIA), the nonprofit association representing global security companies, and University of Phoenix have awarded full-tuition scholarships to 11 full-time employees from SIA member companies. Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree program at University of Phoenix. To be considered for the University of Phoenix SIA Scholarship, applicants wrote three essays and provided a letter of recommendation. High importance was placed on the applicants’ desire to advance in their education, with an emphasis on furthering their careers, and their impact in the security industry in which they reside.
Perry Levine Joins BCDVideo Executive Management Team
BCDVideo introduced 35-year security industry veteran Perry Levine as Director of Strategic Alliances. The newest member of BCDVideo’s Executive Team, Levine will be responsible for articulating the BCDVideo technology message and product platform to National and local security integrators, camera manufacturers, Video Management Software companies, distributors, industry associations, and all technical partners associated with BCDVideo.
SIA Recommends School Safety Guidelines, Endorses Proposed Federal Funding For School Security Grant
In the wake of a tragic shooting in San Bernardino, California, on Monday, the Security Industry Association (SIA) pressed for wide adoption of school security guidelines developed by the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS), which prescribe a tiered approach for schools based on available resources. SIA also announced its support of proposed funding measures on Capitol Hill that would authorize matching grants for school security measures.
John Steele of Johnson Controls Is SIA’s 2016 SIA Committee Chair Of The Year
The Security Industry Association (SIA) has selected John Steele, Senior Director of Government Relations, Johnson Controls, as 2016 SIA Committee Chair of the Year for his work with the SIA Government Relations State and Local Policy Working Group. With this award, SIA honors Steele for his work in advocacy on behalf of the security industry in dialogs with state and local governments. Richard Brent To Chair New SIA International Relations Committee
The Security Industry Association (SIA) announced its establishment of the SIA International Relations Committee, chaired by Richard Brent, CEO, Louroe Electronics. The announcement of SIA’s International Relations Committee was announced from Mexico City in conjunction with the opening day of Expo Seguridad, the largest security exhibition in Mexico, and in partnership with ISC Events. A primary goal of the committee is to collaborate with global security trade associations in efforts which align with the SIA membership’s strategic goals.

SIA Renews Support For Bipartisan DIGIT Act
The Security Industry Association (SIA) announced its continued support of the bipartisan Developing and Growing the Internet of Things (DIGIT) Act, reintroduced in the Senate on January 10th, 2017, by the Internet of Things (IoT) working group. The group consists of Sens. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., Cory Booker, D-N.J., Cory Gardner, R-Colo., and Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii. Sen. Fischer, the bill’s chief sponsor, again recognized SIA as a key supporting organization in a press release.
SIA Hails Passage Of Power And Security Systems Act
SIA has led a coalition in support of extending the current exemption for security and life safety products, which is set to expire on July 1, 2017. Without an extension, manufacturers must redesign EPS products to meet the “no-load” standard, more than doubling their cost unnecessarily. H.R. 6375 is supported by SIA, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, and the Electronic Security Association, which have also worked with energy efficiency community on the common-sense provision.
SIA Announces RISE Month Focused On Young Professionals
The Security Industry Association (SIA) announced that the month of November 2016 will feature a number of events and content focused on young professionals in the security industry. Founded by SIA, RISE is the networking group for the future leaders of the security industry. Geared toward industry professionals in their 20s and 30s, RISE is about making connections, sharing with peers, and gaining education designed to encourage personal and professional growth.
