Collaborative Approach To Moving Ideas, Data, and People

As you are reading this, the chances are pretty good that I’m on the road. Getting to meet new people, seeing their challenges, and helping to develop solutions is one of the best parts of my job. But, while this requires a lot of travel time, it has also afforded me the opportunity to see and know a wide variety of cities and their airports. In my experience, the best airports are those that have created a seamless collaboration between check-in, air-travel, and commerce. When travelers move easily through airport spaces, everyone benefits.

New Ideas, Big Ideas, Smart Ideas Emerge At Smart Cities Week Silicon Valley

Smart Cities Council gathered inventors and technologists and pioneers and civic leaders in the innovation capital of the world last week for a preview of what’s ahead for the cities of tomorrow and the technologies that will shape them. Conference participants had a deep-dive into some of the new technologies that will drive smarter cities, including what breakthroughs in artificial intelligence will mean for cities, how leaders can prepare for the arrival of self-driving cars, new technologies that are helping tackle homelessness and the latest advances in 3D urban modeling, among many others.

Global Video Surveillance Market: Industry 2017-2021: Development of Smart Cities Supports Growth Of Market

Video surveillance, AKA closed-circuit television (CCTV), is not openly transmitted, though it may employ point to point (P2P), point to multipoint (P2MP), or mesh wired or wireless links. Though almost all video cameras fit this definition, the term is most often applied to those used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as bars, banks, casinos, schools, hotels, airports, hospitals, restaurants, military installations, and other areas where security is needed.

“Smart Cities,” Surveillance, And New Streetlights In San Jose: An EFF Response

The San Jose City Council is considering a proposal to install over 39,000 “smart streetlights.” A pilot program is already underway. These smart streetlights are not themselves a surveillance technology. But they have ports on top that, in the future, could accommodate surveillance technology, such as video cameras and microphones. EFF and our allies sent a letter to the San Jose City Council urging them to adopt an ordinance to ensure democratic control of all of that community’s surveillance technology decisions—including whether to plug spy cameras into the ports of smart streetlights.

Capacity For Storage Fast Becoming Vital Component Of Smart City Infrastructure

Automated road traffic management systems, surveillance systems and storage for the vast amount of data being generated will make up a core part of the future smart city infrastructure. Much of this information is sensitive so the storage technology used needs to be the best available. Understanding how storage works and how end users can access it is now the focus for storage companies as they look to facilitate the adoption of cloud-based data centers. As smart cities grow, video surveillance is set to become a key target for storage companies over the next few years and as the cost of network video surveillance cameras drops below $100 so the cost of implementation will fall. As a result, the most difficult task for storage companies is ensuring the cost of storage or cost per gigabyte falls in-line with this while maintaining high standards of performance, compliance and security over those data management and storage systems.

The Terrifying “Smart” City of the Future

Smart cities are loosely defined as urban centers that rely on digital technology to enhance efficiency and reduce resource consumption. This happens by means of ubiquitous wireless broadband, citywide networks of computerized sensors that measure human activities (from traffic to electricity use), and mass data collection that analyzes these patterns.

What Exactly Does ‘Safe Cities’ Mean?

Also known as smart cities and closely linked to the ‘internet of things’, the safe cities concept is broad and nebulous – IFSEC asked a range of security experts what it means to them. The CCTV expert: Simon Adcock, CCTV section chairman, BSIA; MD, Atec Security – – Cities are dynamic, complex environments and securing their prosperity through protecting population, assets and reputation is a major challenge.

Modi’s Smart Cities: The Video Surveillance Angle

When Modi announced the idea of creating 100 smart Indian cities, it created waves in the video surveillance and security market. A city has to be safe, after all, to be smart. “There are so many places where the police is not present. Take the recent case of a minister in Delhi who died in […]

If Boston Were Smart

L ast year, the Daily Beast named Boston the country’s smartest metropolitan area. The website was referring to the people of Boston, of course, not the city itself. But what if the city itself were smart? What if technology, designed by the smart people who work in Boston, could help us save time and energy and spare us from daily frustrations? We talked to some BU researchers who are studying, designing, and building the technology for a more enlightened city. Smarter grid Because the cost of electricity fluctuates throughout the day, depending on demand, smart meters that are currently available tell homeowners exactly how much energy they use and at what cost, encouraging them to delay energy-intensive activities until a time of day when demand and costs are low. Supported by a $2 million National Science Foundation grant, Michael Caramanis, a College of Engineering professor of mechanical and systems engineering, John Baillieul, an ENG professor of mechanical engineering, and two MIT faculty members are collaborating on a study of how these and larger-scale measures could result in a smarter electricity grid. In the United States, we lose about 8 percent of energy because it travels long distances between points of generation to use. Caramanis thinks the loss could be greatly reduced if we got our energy from closer and cleaner sources. A smarter grid could help us do that. security cameras Smarter security Security officers could sort through billions of hours of video footage and spot unusual events, such […]
