CaughtOnCamera: Malaysia Airlines Passenger With Stolen Passport

PHOTO: A patrol vessel with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency searches for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane off Tok Bali Beach in Kelantan, Malaysia, March 9, 2014.
ABC Entertainment News | ABC Business News Copy One of the passengers who used a stolen passport to board the missing Malaysia Airlines passenger jet was a black man, a Malaysian official indicated today. The investigation into Friday’s disappearance of the jetliner with 239 passengers and crew has centered so far around the fact that two passengers used passports stolen from an Austrian and an Italian. The plane which left Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was headed for Beijing. Three of the passengers, one adult and two children, were American. Today Malaysia’s Civil Aviation Chief Azaharuddin Abdul Rahman said officials had reviewed surveillance tape of the plane’s boarding "from check-in right to departure." "I can confirm that all security protocols had been complied with," he said. When asked about the two men who used the stolen passports, Rahman replied, "We confirmed now they are not Asian looking males." When pressed to describe them, he said, "Do you know a footballer by the name of Bartoli? Do you know what he looks like?" Reporters corrected him asking, "Mario Balotelli?" and asked whether the man with the stolen passport was black. Balotelli, who is black, is an Italian soccer player. "Yes," Rahman replied. Rahman refused to further describe the two men. Rahman also indicated that investigators were not any closer to determining what happened […]

Port Tampa Bay Selects PlateSmart?s ARES Enterprise LPR Solution

By Tom Reeve on March 5, 2014 The developers behind Jabbakam, the cloud-based online video surveillance and security system, have redeveloped and re-launched the product as a corporate-grade surveillance solution under the name Cloudview. I sat down with Cloudview founder James Wickes recently to find out why he thinks his solution will revolutionise the corporate security market. Jabbakam was developed in 2010 as a video management system to allow people to record CCTV surveillance video to an internet server and view the footage online. It also allows users to network IP cameras together and share the footage either privately or with a wider audience. The Jabbakam VMS works with its own brand cameras or a selected range of IP cameras from companies such as Y-Cam and Axis. Despite being designed primarily for the domestic market, Jabbakam attracted a great deal of interest from the corporate market, Wickes said. “On the basis of that, we developed Cloudview and changed the company name.” With Cloudview, the product is first and foremost an analogue camera solution. Using a Cloudview video network adapter (VNA), users can stream analogue cameras to the cloud storage system using automatic event triggers or manual activation. The VNA includes a built-in video encoder, SD card slot for local storage and network adapter as well as a USB slot for plugging in a wireless network adapter or 3G wifi device. Simples Wickes said that Jabbakam had taught him the importance of keeping things simple. “The key challenges highlighted through […]

Sea-Tac Security Cam Captures Man Running Toward Tarmac

Sea-Tac security cam captures man running toward tarmac SEATAC, Wash. – Security camera video obtained by KOMO News shows how a man was able to walk through a restricted emergency exit and make his way toward the tarmac at Sea-Tac Airport. The security breach happened Jan. 9 between gates 2 and 3 in Sea-Tac’s D concourse. An airport spokesperson says the mentally ill man opened a glass door exit that leads to stairs, which lead to the tarmac. Baggage handlers noticed the man and tackled him when he tried to run away from the terminal. Police arrested the suspect and took him to the King County Jail. They did not release his name or age. He was not armed and did not make any verbal threats. Officials say he had a ticket and made it through security with no problem. The incident raises questions about security breaches at the airport and whether passengers should be concerned. "By tackling him they were obviously on point about what they needed to do," said Annie Salonen. "If for some reason someone does get past that then they’ll be taken care of." Port of Seattle Police Chief Colleen Wilson said while her officers are ready to react quickly to any threat, all employees are expected to challenge anybody who appears to be in a restricted area without authorization. She applauds what the baggage handlers did. "It’s a really great example of the multiple layers of security we have built in here at the […]

Coast Guard to propose cruise ship video surveillance rules

Nearly four years after passage of a comprehensive cruise safety law, the U.S. Coast Guard is getting ready to propose a rule for three of the trickiest provisions in the legislation. The proposed rule, expected out in June, will outline how cruise lines can comply with a requirement in the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act that they deploy technology for “capturing images of passengers or detecting passengers who have fallen overboard.” Also addressed in the rule will be how a cruise ship’s video surveillance system should be operated to document crimes on the ship and assist in their later prosecution. Advocates of the law say the provisions will make passengers feel more secure about taking a cruise. But the cruise industry has raised red flags about the cost and practicality of applying the law. In one instance, a cruise line told auditors at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that just doubling the time it keeps video footage from 14 to 28 days would cost an extra $21.8 million. Most of the 15 provisions in the 2010 act, such as peepholes in cabin doors and standard rail heights, had been translated into Coast Guard guidance by June 2011. The remaining ones involved complex technologies and, in some cases, language in the law that didn’t set a clear benchmark for gauging compliance. In the case of detecting when persons fall overboard, the law called for compliance “to the extent that such technology is available.” The Coast Guard asked for input […]

Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Camera Found In Bathroom

An American Airlines 767. (Credit: American Airlines) If you were going to affix a tiny camera in an airplane bathroom, wouldn’t you remember to take it down again? Before, you know, someone found it. It seems, though, that an unknown person — for an unknown reason — taped a camera inside an airplane bathroom on Sunday and left it there. When it was discovered, the American Airlines 767 plane, which was en route from San Francisco to New York, was diverted to Kansas City, as no one at the time could identify the device. It was feared to be a bomb. As NBC News reports , it looked like a flash drive. But government officials now say it was a camera masquerading as a flash drive. That might lead some to speculation fueled by imagination. Some will utter words such as "mile," "high" and "club"; although, "high" might be sufficient. Of course, the camera might have been there before the plane had taken off and no one had noticed it. Cameras disguised as flash drives are freely available, some costing as little as $50. Some models claim to record high-definition video. On the Brickhouse Security Web site , for example, one potential benefit is described as: "Use it as a handheld mini-camera or leave it plugged into your computer while set to motion activation to catch what’s going on while you’re away." Clearly, though, if the stick was attached to a surface in the bathroom, it was likely put […]

L.A.’s Congressional Rep Waters Calls For Armed Police At Airports

Los Angeles — In the wake of last month’s deadly shooting at Los Angeles International Airport , a local congresswoman has called for improvements to airport security, including the permanent assignment of armed police officers near passenger screening checkpoints. Rep. Maxine Waters , D-Los Angeles, also urged law enforcement officials to allow airport police to have access to all airport security cameras. "I believe these recommendations will play a vital role in ensuring that all travelers and airport employees are safe in our nation’s airports," said Waters, whose district includes LAX. Waters made the request on Thursday in a letter sent to John Pistole , head of the Transportation Security Administration , which is responsible for screening passengers at the nation’s commercial airports. In the Nov. 1 shooting, a gunman armed with an assault-style rifle entered Terminal 3 and shot his way through the screening area before he was shot and captured near the boarding gates. A TSA agent was killed and two other TSA officials as well as a schoolteacher were wounded. Paul Anthony Ciancia , 23, has been charged with murder and attempted murder in the attack. Earlier this year, the Los Angeles Airport Police Department removed armed officers from the checkpoints at LAX and added them to patrols, ending a policy that was put in place shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks. Critics of the decision, including former airport security officials, said the reassignment reduced the chances officers had of stopping the gunman. In addition, union […]

Port Arthur, Sabine-Neches Waterway Improve Video Security

Port Arthur featured With high-level national security implications, live-camera views and the ability to quickly check recorded video is essential to the port’s operational standards for efficiency. As the fourth largest port in the U.S., Port Arthur in Texas’ Jefferson County is the number-one crude oil destination for foreign tankers, as well as the number-one commercial and military out-load port. Hundreds of vessels are processed through the channel each day, making their way from other domestic ports and from all over the globe into the Gulf of Mexico and up the Sabine-Neches Waterway. With oil refineries and other critical infrastructure lining the 55 miles of river bank through Jefferson County, the sheriff’s department required a sophisticated security surveillance system to monitor waterway traffic and incidents. Deputies needed to ensure the safety of those working and traveling through the port, and to keep commercial and military traffic flowing. A vast waterway traffic-monitoring network has been deployed at Sabine-Neches to ensure all vessels can safely navigate the waters. The new surveillance system also monitors the many petroleum refineries that line the channel. Backed by a Verizon Wireless 4G connection, the county cameras alongside the waterway are networked through the use of Milestone XProtect Enterprise surveillance software. “Milestone’s open platform IP software integrates with all of the cameras seamlessly” said Mark Nolan of Knight Security Systems, the designer and integrator of the Sabine-Neches Waterway monitoring and surveillance project. “Milestone XProtect provides the sheriff’s department with more high-definition screen images […]

Canadian Border ?Most Likely Entry Point? For Terrorists, U.S. Congress Hears

U.S. Border Patrol agents talk while at a marina on the Niagara River at the U.S.-Canada border on June 3, 2013 in Beaver Island State Park, New York. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which includes the Border Patrol, monitors the 5,525 mile long border, including Alaska, forming the longest international border between two countries in the world. OTTAWA — Canada represents the greatest threat from terrorists trying to enter the United States, a top U.S. border agent told congressional lawmakers this week. “As far as I am aware, all recent threat assessments have pointed to the northern border as the most likely point of entry into our country for terrorists,” Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, told a House of Representatives’ subcommittee on national security. Judd, who represents more than 17,000 unionized Border Patrol agents, offered no specifics in his prepared statement to the committee, hearing testimony about reforming the agents’ pay system. Still, he warned the panel that U.S. officials must not become complacent about the dangers that lurk along the border with Canada and “the ongoing threat … to the safety of the American public.” “In the early to mid-1990s, San Diego and El Paso were ground zero for both illegal immigration and drug smuggling,” he said. “In response, the border patrol threw all of its resources at those two areas without also strengthening the other areas of the border.” The thinking was that Arizona’s inhospitable climate and terrain would help deter other illegal […]

Oncam Grandeye 360-Degree Technology Chosen To Protect Ireland’s Shannon Airport

Oncam Grandeye, the global innovator in technology, security solutions and 360-degree surveillance cameras, has been awarded a contract for the Shannon Airport Authority. Glasgow-based Video Management Systems (VMS), which selected Oncam Grandeye’s technology, will be the local integrator on the project, and the cameras will be controlled and managed through Titan Vision, VMS’ IP CCTV video management and PSIM solution. Shannon Airport is located on the western-most part of Ireland and is considered to be the gateway between Europe and the Americas. It handles approximately 3 million people a year, and nearly 50,000 metric tons of freight gets transported through its cargo area. The facility is enormous, with 40 check-in desks, 5 baggage carousels and 14 boarding gates (including 6 air bridges). There are nearly 40 aircraft parking stands. The car-parks can hold more than 5,000 cars. John Francis, the security manager at Shannon Airport, faces myriad challenges, and he tackled the terminal first. 360-degree cameras have been placed at the boarding gates in the large, congested area used by low-cost airlines. The main reason for surveillance here is health and safety. “We’re looking for slips and trips,” says Francis. Other cameras are positioned in the arrivals area, which houses vending machines, ATM’s, car-hire desks and pay stations for the car park. “The PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom camera) was always looking the wrong way when something happened, and was sometimes left zoomed in by an operator,” he said. “This is never the case with the 360; we see everything.” Shannon needed […]
