How Slow-Motion Video Footage Misleads Juries

slow-motion-handgun

From surveillance cameras to smartphones, today?s crimes are increasingly being captured on video. But could showing slow-motion replays of crimes in court be producing harsher verdicts? This is the suggestion from a new study published in PNAS by researchers at the University of Chicago, University of San Francisco, and University of Virginia. They argue that slow motion replays can give viewers ?the false impression that the actor had more time to premeditate before acting.? Participants were shown surveillance footage of either an attempted robbery in which the assailant shot the store worker, or an NFL player performing a banned tackle. Participants, who were recruited online using Amazon?s Mechanical Turk crowdsourcing program, were shown the videos both at regular speed and in slow motion.

‘Predictive Policing’ Isn’t In Science Fiction, It’s In Sacramento

police_observation_device_pod

Sacramento —like New York, Houston, Miami, St. Louis, and other cities before it— is looking at the next step: the launch in October of a ?real-time crime center,? a central location from which officers could monitor all their existing surveillance technologies, PODs included. The idea is that consolidating information about criminal activity —from stalking complaints to potential lone wolf terrorist attacks— would make law enforcement more effective at investigating and perhaps preventing some incidents. The process would also promote accountability and transparency at a time of rising tension between police and the black community, providing evidence of both police and suspect behavior during tense encounters, proponents say.

Best-Practices Solution at Major Texas School District

A Texas school district encompassing about 100 square miles with 45 buildings and 35,000 students needed to update its video storage capabilities. They received a bond in 2011 giving the police department funding to install, and update the school district video surveillance and access control in all of its buildings and facilities.

The existing architecture created a bottleneck within their system. After a year, it was only operational in about half the buildings in the district. Instead of being an independent platform, the IT blade servers were located in the chassis that shared resources with other applications. These servers produced lag time on live videos because overnight archiving routinely overlapped into daytime activity. Schools are learning that they can?t rely on decade-old technology to provide evidence, insight, and protection that meet modern security needs. They contacted an integrator for assistance.

Ring Solar-Powered Home Security Cam Is Wireless And 100% Green

ring_solar_outdoor_camera

Ring first broke into home security with its Ring Video Doorbell. When someone rings the doorbell, an alert is sent to your smartphone and you can view and talk to whoever’s at your door. Alternatively, the doorbell can begin recording when it detects motion at your door and send alerts to your phone. And thanks to its built-in infrared LEDs, the camera works at night. The $199 Ring Stick Up Cam works in a similar fashion, save for the doorbell part. Ring?s goal is to help ease your security fears by providing multiple products that complement one another instead of forcing you to buy a doorbell from Ring and an outdoor security camera from another company.

How Deep Learning Is Advancing Video Analytics

video_analytics

Deep learning technologies are making it possible to process and analyze vast streams of footage. It?s an area that?s been seeing significant investment and research. Mimicking the process of the human brain, the technique uses sophisticated, multi-level, ?deep? neural networks to create systems that can perform feature detection from massive amounts of unlabeled training data. Data scientists in both industry and academia are using graphics processing units (GPUs) to accelerate their deep learning algorithms. GPUs process highly parallel computing tasks —like video and graphics— quickly and efficiently.
