U.S. University Improves Security With Access Control Solution
Comment Comment Print Print Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Share Digg Del.icio.us StumbleUpon Bookmark Public Safety By Kelly Ng | 21 February 2014 | Views: 616 The Academy of Art University in San Francisco USA, with over 18,000 students, has implemented a new scaleable access control platform to increase campus safety and security, reduce theft, and improve campus experience. The University needed a centralised security system that manages access to its buildings spread across the campus that house expensive equipment and high-value student work. The solution also had to support future expansion and enhancement. According to Campus Safety Director Mike Petricca, the selected access control system by HID met both their needs for security and scaleability based on an open architecture that could support multiple card technologies and future enhancements. Through a single centralised system, students use ID cards to unlock doors easily, doing away with metal keys. The system also provides the security team with reports that will help them make better decisions on security policies and operations. The simplified credential issuance and management meant that the University can automatically turn cards off and on between semesters or permanently disable identities after resignation or failure to re-enroll, thus enhancing campus security. “HID Global’s iCLASS SE platform has made our campus more safe and secure, while enabling cardholders to do more than just open doors with their ID cards, including making purchases using the university’s debit program for meals and cashless vending, and gaining access to athletic events,” said Petricca. In future, the University has the option of provisioning […]

Ready for Hybrid Access Control?
Ready for Hybrid Access Control? Today, there are three major initiatives for cards and credentials on college and healthcare campuses. Every security director needs to be aware of them. 1. Smart cards are becoming the credential of choice. If you presently use magnetic stripe or proximity cards, start planning for the switchover now. 2. It’s going to be a hybrid world. Although smart cards will be the credential of choice, multiple types of credentials such as key systems, PINs, various cards and biometrics , will still be necessary for certain operations. Adding specialized credentials to such areas is possible. And, even though you may be using multiple credentials, you still will want one system to manage all of them. 3. Get ready for new technologies such as near field communications (NFC) . With NFC-enabled smart phones, you will be able to employ your employees’/customers’ own smart phones as access credentials, just like they would use smart cards. Start preparing now. Now a smart credential, which costs about the same as a proximity card, provides a higher level of security, more convenience and far greater functionality. As used on campuses and in newer access control systems, smart credentials have the ability to manage access, payments and many other functions much more securely. For instance, MIFARE DESFire EV1 smart cards offer several layers of security, including mutual authentication. This creates the ability for the client to verify or authenticate the server. These smart credentials also provide: AES 128-bit encryption, a key […]

3M Cogent Biometric Fingerprint Technology Integrated Into Entrust IdentityGuard
February 24, 2014 – by Peter B. Counter As is often said, the key to biometric adoption lies in a delicate balance between a promised increase of security and a decrease in the friction users experience when interacting with it. Essentially: next generation authentication is in high demand, but its biggest obstacle in adoption lies in how easy it is to deploy and use. Today a new collaboration was announced between Entrust and 3M Cogent , leveraging that latter’s fingerprint biometric technology as logical access control solution for workstations via the former’s IdentityGuard software authentication platform. It’s a combination that stands to provide customers looking for a strong biometric access control solution for their organization with FBI trusted authentication (the solution satisfies CJIS requirements necessary for law enforcement deployment) that is proven to be convenient. Entrust President David Wagner explains why the companies are well suited as partners, saying, “Entrust and 3M share the same standards and vision for authenticating identities. Integrating proven 3M biometric authentication is another step in the platform’s evolution — a stride that continues our focus on properly protecting customer identities.” Both new and existing IdentityGuard customers will be able to benefit from the biometric boost to security. This allows for streamlined and strong logical access control for cloud and internal systems. Teresa Wu, who manages 3M Cogent’s global biometric portfolio expands on the collaboration: “Entrust and 3M have complementary offerings in the identity management marketplace — from digital certificate management to identity document […]

US Customs Consider Using Facial Recognition, Other Biometrics At US-Mexico Border
San Ysidro Border Crossing Customs and Border Protection is considering using biometric technology like facial recognition software on travelers leaving the United States by land. Last week, the agency put out a request for information on how biometrics might help accurately identify people leaving the U.S. The agency expressed interest in facial recognition, iris scanning and fingerprint reading. "Biometrics are the ultimate in identity," CBP executive director Colleen Manaher said. Biometrics are used already on some visitors coming into the U.S. Manaher believes recent advancements in biometrics could soon spot people overstaying their visas, for instance. "Right now, the biometric solutions of iris-on-the-move and face recognition are high contenders," she said. "But right now we’re only in the research phase." The agency has not begun the process of contracting with biometric companies. And it’s still too early to say exactly how this technology would be used at border crossings like San Ysidro or Otay Mesa. Officials say biometrics would not be focused on U.S. citizens and would adhere to strict privacy standards.

Canada Eyes Wider Biometric Info Sharing
OTTAWA – Canada is eyeing greatly expanded sharing of immigration information — such as fingerprints of visa applicants — with not only the United States but other key allies. An internal memo prepared for Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander says the government is building an information technology system that could be used for the systematic exchange of biometric data with Britain, Australia and New Zealand. "Systematic sharing is preferable to manual case-by-case sharing because it can generate faster responses and be done at higher volumes," says the briefing memo, obtained under the Access to information Act. The federal government is already pursuing wide-scale sharing of immigration information with the United States under the highly publicized perimeter security pact. Beginning this year, the fingerprints of visa applicants to Canada from more than two dozen countries will be checked against a U.S. database that includes the prints of immigration violators, criminals and known or suspected terrorists. The federal privacy commissioner has expressed concerns about high-volume, routine information sharing with other countries, saying it may be impossible to control what happens to that data once sent abroad. The government says such data-sharing is essential to fight fraud and abuse of Canada’s immigration system. Biometric information — unique identifiers such as an iris scan or a fingerprint record — is considered especially useful. Lately there has been intense scrutiny of Canada’s security relationship with its closest allies — collectively known as the Five Eyes — due to intelligence leaks by former American […]

Brivo Labs Demonstrates OKDoor Through Google Glass
As Google Glass continues toward an inevitable public release, users (and developers) are still trying to puzzle out exactly what the device is best suited for. There are games, cooking apps, news alert apps, and of course a tidy bundle of Google services in the slowly expanding list of official Glassware. Of course, there’s more to Glass than official Glassware. Developers are making some fairly compelling tools for Google’s eyeball computer, and Brivo Labs, in an effort to "explore the future of wearable technology," recently published a demonstration of one such tool. OKDoor, an app that beams visitors to your Glass and allows users to grant (or deny) access with a tap, is actually a demonstration of Brivo’s SAM API, a tool Brivo Labs is developing as "a game changer in the way people interact and manage everyday access needs." Of course this includes opening physical doors. Brivo says SAM can authenticate visitors with various credentials, and provisioning access can be hooked into social networks like Facebook and Twitter. As the quick video below shows, OKDoor essentially functions by beaming footage from your door’s camera (assuming there is one) to your sight line, at which point you need only tap twice to unlock the door. Further details about just how OKDoor works are unclear right now, but Brivo says they’ll be showing it off – along with SAM – at SXSW this year. Does the potential of a less-than-warm yet oh-so-automated welcome for your visitors seem compelling enough to […]

Security Scans May Mean Delays At Military Gates
Naval Station Mayport is adding an additional Security measure to its gates and it may be an initial delay to getting on the base. The Navy Access Control Management System (NACMS) Handheld Scanners have been re-issued to Naval Station Mayport for use at the station’s Entry Control Points (ECP’s), such as the main gate at Mayport Road and Gate 5, off of SRA1A. The scanners have the added capability to scan, read and authenticate DoD Common Access Cards (CAC), DoD Retired Military IDs, and DoD Dependents IDs, along with RAPIDGate credentials. Initial scanning of an ID Card or RAPIDGate credential may take 15-20 seconds to complete, however, once an ID Card or RAPIDGate credential is scanned, all scans afterwards should only take around 5 seconds to complete. To reduce traffic back-ups and delays, personnel are asked to plan an extra 15-20 minutes in their morning commute during the next 3 to 4 weeks while the scanners work to effectively scan each and every credential and ID card.
