Temperatures here in Montreal have once again settled into the low negative 30s. Rather than complain, we embrace the cold and head outside. And this year, it’s with the added benefit of getting ready for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. To be fair, we are not all Olympic athletes able to compete in bobsledding, skeleton, or moguls. But we do feel like winter sports are an essential part of our everyday lives. We feel personally connected with the event, and, for me, this extends to issues of security. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to talk with Juliette Kayyem, a professor who teaches on homeland security at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. At the time, she said something that has stayed with me ever since: “If you want to have a perfectly safe Super Bowl, don’t have a Super Bowl.”

ASIS Awards $22,000 Grant To Help Secure Dallas’ CityLab High School
ASIS International, the world’s largest association for security management professionals, announced that the CityLab High School in Dallas, TX is the winner of its School Security Grant Competition. CityLab High School is receiving a $22,000 grant to pay for upgrades to the school’s camera system, access control system, and classroom intercoms. In addition to the grant, Axis Communications is making an in-kind donation of fixed-dome cameras, access control, and other accessories in order to support the campus-wide upgrade.
Knightscope K5 ‘Drowns’ In Fountain Mishap
On Monday, a Knightscope K5 security robot in Washington DC suffered a watery demise after falling into a fountain. The mishap was spotted by passers-by whose photos of the aftermath quickly went viral on social media. Onlookers at the office complex discovered a curious sight: the body of a security robot, floating face-down in a fountain. The Knightscope K5 autonomous security ground vehicle is able to “detect unusual activity and report it for humans to investigate,” according to the company’s website.

More Harford MD School Buses To Get Video Surveillance Cameras
Harford County (Maryland) Public Schools will more than double the number of mobile video surveillance systems inside its buses, after the Board of Education approved a $179,640 contract recently to purchase systems for 103 buses. The surveillance systems have already been installed on 95 buses, including those operated by the school system and those operated by independent contractors, Charles Taibi, director of transportation, told board members.

Due to the fact that Universities and Institutes for Higher Learning have large amounts of legacy financial and health records, grant computer privileges to students with traditionally a lax security mindset, and house valuable research data hackers have taken notice. This is why higher education has become the second most targeted industry after Healthcare. Based on how stolen data can be monetized, various types of hackers have become interested for different reasons. In some cases, it has been nation-state actors that are more interested in the research data such as with the recent case of the Russian hacker known as Rasputin. In other cases, it has been an individual who was able to change passwords of email accounts or a disenfranchised student assistant who was terminated but maintained access to the system.
