ASIS International Commends STOP School Violence Legislation
ASIS International hailed passage of legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that will help increase school security by providing grant money for a variety of school safety measures. ASIS International is drafting a letter of support to share with key Senate offices as they consider this important legislation. ASIS members will be updated as action is taken by the Senate.
SIA Supports Senate?s STOP School Violence Act
The Security Industry Association (SIA) strongly supports S. 2495, the Students, Teachers and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Act of 2018, introduced by a bipartisan coalition of 25 U.S. senators led by Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn. The legislation would fund school security improvements and invest in prevention programs to stop school violence before it happens.

Johnson Controls announced that Florida Atlantic University has selected the Software House C?CURE 9000 security and event management platform to secure a new building that is part of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, a facility which houses research, administration, and a medical clinic. With C?CURE 9000, Florida Atlantic University can easily manage student access to classrooms and laboratories, which can range from 24-hour access to the building to limited facility access during examination time. In addition, the university needed to restrict access to medical record rooms, the pharmacy and other sensitive areas.

And this year, it?s with the added benefit of getting ready for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. To be fair, we are not all Olympic athletes able to compete in bobsledding, skeleton, or moguls. But we do feel like winter sports are an essential part of our everyday lives. ASIS Awards $22,000 Grant To Help Secure Dallas’ CityLab High School
ASIS International, the world’s largest association for security management professionals, announced that the CityLab High School in Dallas, TX is the winner of its School Security Grant Competition. CityLab High School is receiving a $22,000 grant to pay for upgrades to the school?s camera system, access control system, and classroom intercoms. In addition to the grant, Axis Communications is making an in-kind donation of fixed-dome cameras, access control, and other accessories in order to support the campus-wide upgrade.
Knightscope K5 ‘Drowns’ In Fountain Mishap
On Monday, a Knightscope K5 security robot in Washington DC suffered a watery demise after falling into a fountain. The mishap was spotted by passers-by whose photos of the aftermath quickly went viral on social media. Onlookers at the office complex discovered a curious sight: the body of a security robot, floating face-down in a fountain. The Knightscope K5 autonomous security ground vehicle is able to “detect unusual activity and report it for humans to investigate,” according to the company’s website.
