ISONAS Expands Patent Protection Within Pure IP Access Control
In August 2010 ISONAS was issued a patent pivotal to the fast growing and emerging market of IP access control. Patent 7,775,429 covers aspects relating to one or more of the following features: 1. The ability for a reader/controller to make decisions “locally” at the edge, while still having the ability to program permissions for all access points “centrally”. This allows the completely panel-less access control system to continue working when the network is down, and it allows a large number of readers to have their permissions determined by rules set up centrally, often by Microsoft Active Directory. 2. Powering the reader, electric strike and other devices at the door via Power over Ethernet. PoE dramatically reduced cost and complexity of installation because no additional electricity is required at the access point. 3. Managing system configuration via a web interface. Decentralizing credential management, and creating lock-down scripts accessible to more than just a system administrator requires access via the internet. We are proud to announce that ISONAS was issued patent #8,662,386 in early March 2014 that significantly expands the reach of our patented Pure IP solution. ISONAS is the leader and innovator in Pure IP access control. Visit our website at www.ISONAS.com to learn more about how your organization can be part of the proven revolution. ISONAS. ONVIF Introduces New Observer Level Membership
ONVIF is adding a new membership level to its membership structure called the Observer level, which encompasses consultants, systems architects and engineers and members of the media. The addition of the Observer level membership grants these individuals certain benefits within ONVIF, key among them the opportunity to access network interface specification test tools to become more familiar with the ONVIF interface without participating at the same level as a manufacturer. Observer members will be able to independently test products to determine their conformance with ONVIF Profiles to better enable consultants, engineers and media to impartially evaluate different products. “We recognise the importance of making ONVIF as inclusive as possible to those wishing to participate in the conformance verification process,” said Per Bjorkdahl, Chairman of ONVIF’s Steering Committee. “Through the addition of this fourth membership level, we are granting more individuals access to ONVIF’s test tools and empowering them to independently authenticate Profile conformance on products they wish to present to their clients or readers.” There are more than 2,700 ONVIF-conformant products on the market covering Profile S for video and audio streaming, and the recent release of Profile C for physical access control enables manufacturers to claim conformance for Profile C conformant products. ONVIF currently has three other membership levels to accommodate individual levels of participation: user member, contributing member and full member. Full and contributing members can actively influence the development of the standard by participating in the work of the forum. The user member level is open […]

UK Physical Access Control Market Report 2013
(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dublin – Research and Markets ( http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/fw2rg2/access_control ) has announced the addition of the "Access Control Market Report 2013" report to their offering. This Market Report examines the UK market for physical access control, which is primarily concerned with the restriction of a particular room, structure or site to authorised personnel only, allowing users to restrict or grant access, monitor throughput, and report unauthorised access attempts in certain areas. The types of products covered by this report include audio and video entryphones, keypad systems, biometric systems, and card- or token-based access control systems. Within card- or token-based access control systems there is a range of technology solutions available, including magnetic-stripe cards, Weigand cards, barcode cards, proximity systems, long-range/hands-free systems, vehicle access control systems, smart cards and dual-function cards. The authors estimate the UK access control market to have fallen in value by 5.9% between 2008 and 2012. Sluggish economic growth, low business investment levels, and the struggling construction sector are important factors affecting demand for access control products. Businesses operating in the UK access control industry include: product manufacturers, suppliers, systems designers and installers, and wholesale distributors. The majority of leading manufacturers and suppliers are part of large, foreign-owned multinational companies, although there are also several independent UK companies and subsidiaries of public limited companies (PLCs) that operate in the market. Many of the leading systems designers and installers are also UK subsidiaries of large multinationals, as are some of the leading wholesale […]

Having recently graduated with a degree in Mass Media, and a dream of one day becoming a broadcaster, Michelle brings a fresh take on all things news – technology, politics, and yes, even sports. Her love for people makes the job something she loves, which is obvious in all that she does for the studio.” When I was in college, there wasn’t a peep hole to see who was outside my door. So I would blindly answer the door, not knowing who it was going to be. And as a 4’11 girl, it was intimidating and kind of scary to open my door to whoever. I wish that I had Chui was when I was in college. Chui is facial recognition software that allows people to come in and out of the house. Basically, Chui is a super smart doorbell. The doorbell recognizes who’s ringing your doorbell and sends a notification straight to your phone or tablet. Then you can respond with audio, live video feed, or an action to unlock your door. So you can be thousands of miles away from your home, and you can open the door for your next door neighbor who needs to borrow a cup of sugar. This is something that I could’ve really used at school. Heck, it’s something that I could use now! If you want to learn more […]

NIST Guide Aims To Ease Access Control
Advice on how to encourage information sharing while preserving control over access to data is provided in a new special publication from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. NIST Special Publication 800-162 is titled Guide to Attribute-Based Access Control Definition and Consideration . Attribute-based access control, or ABAC, is a logical access control methodology where authorization to perform a set of operations is determined by evaluating attributes associated with the subject, such as a user or employee; an object, such as specific computerized resource; and requested operations. The flexibility of the ABAC model allows the greatest breadth of subjects to access the greatest breadth of objects without specifying individual relationships between each subject and each object, according to the NIST guidance. "Access decisions can change between requests by simply changing attribute values, without the need to change the subject/object relationships defining underlying rule sets," says NIST Computer Scientist Vincent Hu, who co-wrote the guidance. "This provides a more dynamic access control management capability and limits long-term maintenance requirements of object protections." Example on How ABAC Works NIST offers the following scenario to describe the workings of ABAC: Nancy Smith, a nurse practitioner in a hospital’s cardiology department, is the subject, and when hired at the medical center, she is assigned a set of attributes: her name, title and department, for instance. She’s assigned access to an object, in this case, medical records of heart patients. Resources may receive their attributes either directly from their creator or as a […]

ONVIF On Access Control: Profile C
ONVIF , the US-based global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, announced the final release of Profile C, which covers physical access control. Through Profile C, instalers, specifiers and consultants can achieve interoperability between clients and devices of physical access control systems (PACS) and network-based CCTV. With this release, including the availability of the Profile C Test Tool, manufacturers are now able to introduce Profile C conformant products to the market. With Profile C, according to the standards body, compatibility between access control edge devices and clientsmeans installations simplified and training time diminished because of the reduced need for multiple proprietary monitoring systems to handle devices. Profile C conformant devices within the access system provide door and access point information related to basic door control such as locking and unlocking, when a door has been accessed and other door monitoring tasks. Per Björkdahl, Chairman of ONVIF’s Steering Committee, said: “Extending the ONVIF interface into other areas of physical security emphasizes ONVIF’s recognition that systems designers need a consistent interface to enable seamless integration within their security systems . With the release of Profile C for access control, integrators and specifiers can be confident that products bearing the Profile C mark will work together, ultimately enabling a better physical access control solution or integrated access and video system for their clients.” Profile C can also be combined with ONVIF Profile S for video and audio streaming so that users can group related access and video devices, sharing the same […]

Why Did JANA Partners Open A New Financial Position In Allegion?
Must-know assessment: JANA Partners’ positions in 4Q 2013 (Part 2 of 8) ( Continued from Part 1 ) JANA Partners disclosed a 2.41% new position in Allegion plc (ALLE), a $2 billion security solutions provider for homes and businesses. Allegion has seen hedge fund interest with Trian Partners and DE Shaw holding positions in the stock. Allegion debuted in December last year as a standalone, publicly-traded company following its spinoff from industrial goods manufacturer Ingersoll-Rand (IR). Under the spinoff transaction, approximately 96 million ordinary shares of Allegion were issued to Ingersoll-Rand shareholders. These holders received one ordinary share of Allegion for every three ordinary shares of IR held. Fractional shares that the IR shareholders would otherwise have been entitled to receive were aggregated and sold in the public market. Ireland-based Ingersoll-Rand had confirmed the spin off in December 2012, after a strategic review to improve shareholder and company value. Activist firm Trian Partners, which acquired a 7% stake in Ingersoll-Rand in 2012 and a seat on the company’s board, was instrumental in pushing for a break up of the company that eventually culminated in the spin off of the security business. The division, according to news reports, accounts for 15% of Ingersoll-Rand’s revenue. After the spin off, Ingersoll reported its financial results as two segments—climate and industrial. For the fourth quarter, Ingersoll-Rand reported a profit of $47.6 million, or $0.16 a share, a decline from $235.6 million, or $0.78 a share due to a slowdown in the U.S. construction […]
