Interview With Alexey Khitrov, President, Speechpro
Peter O’Neill, President, findBIOMETRICS (fB): Can you please give us a little bit of background on the company? Alexey Khitrov, President, Speechpro (SP): Speechpro is the North American subsidiary of the Speech Technology Center . The company was founded in 1990 and has been around for over 20 years. Two key factors separate us from other companies. One is our emphasis on R&D. We do have probably one of the biggest R&D capabilities in voice biometrics with about 150 people in R&D alone (total staff is 400) including 30 PhD’s on board. The other thing is the breadth of the offering and the breadth of the technological expertise that we can bring to the customers. We have products in everything audio from multichannel recordings, speech analytics, signal processing, both text-dependent, text -independent voice verification (1:1) and voice identification (1:N). So the focus on R&D and the breadth of our offering are the two things that separate us from the rest. We have a long history in law enforcement segment of voice biometric market (including some of the world’s largest deployments) and recently introduced our solutions to the Enterprise customers. fB: Can you tell us a little bit about one of your latest product releases, the VoiceKey.OnePass? SP: Absolutely. So VoiceKey.OnePass is an innovative idea that brings together different biometric modalities into a single verification process. The idea here is to make verification in the mobile environment or online as easy as possible while increasing the security. So what we […]

New York Tests Video Analytics For Foot Traffic
GCN LOGO Emerging Tech Blog archive New York tests video analytics for foot traffic Think of it as a benign Big Brother. New York City is testing a new application that analyzes video streams of the city’s streets to glean data about pedestrian traffic patterns. Data showing the flow of people can offer several advantages, say city planning officials, from helping small businesses scout new locations to enabling the sanitation department to anticipate demand for trash pick-ups. "Our goal is to build a real-time data layer about what is happening in the physical world, where people are, by analyzing existing video feeds and using computer vision algorithms on them," said Alexandre Winter, CEO and founder of Placemeter, the company that is providing the pedestrian data to the city. According to Lindsay Mollineaux, a quantitative analyst with the city’s Office of Data Analytics, "We had great city data on business conditions and demographics, but the one thing we really wanted were really granular, neighborhood pedestrian foot-traffic patterns." The city currently uses the pedestrian traffic data primarily to aid those interested in opening small business to determine the most promising location. But there are many other potential applications. "The Department of Sanitation has expressed interest in exploring further," said Nick O’Brien, chief of staff of the Office of Data Analytics. "If they know there’s going to be more activity in an area they can be sure to get somebody out there to clear the trash bins so they don’t overflow." […]

How In-Store Analytics Is Changing The Way You Shop
Apple’s Latest iPhone Models Go On Sale Across U.S. Andrew Burton/Getty Most of us have accepted the fact that when we log on to a website, web cookies are tracking our every click. That’s how sites like this can tell what people are reading and what they’re ignoring, which all helps inform what those sites publish next. The same goes for e-commerce sites. If you click a pair of shoes at Saks.com several times, maybe even drop it into a virtual shopping cart, it’s likely you’ll see ads for that exact shoe hours, even days, later. Whether or not you bought the shoes only matters a little. Cookies allow e-commerce sites to track consumer behavior, which in turn better informs what each site looks like, what kinds of products it offers and where else on the web it buys ads. Retailers want to be able to gather the same data that they gather online at their brick-and-mortar stores. Until recently, that hasn’t been possible. The advent of smartphones, however, means that retailers are increasingly able to track your every move. And just like there are multiple analytics platforms on the web — from Google Analytics to my particular favorite, Omniture — there are dozens of in-store analytics programs, too, many of which have received millions of dollars in venture capital funding over the past couple of years. The one you’re most likely to encounter initially is iBeacon, which was developed by Apple . It works with your iPhone’s Bluetooth […]

Viseum?s Automated Surveillance Technology
Viseum By Viseum UK Ltd NewsDesk on December 19, 2013 A former BT communications manager, turned inventor, believes that his intelligent CCTV surveillance company has developed a “Guardian Angel” video surveillance technology, which can keep us all safe from crime and violence whilst protecting our right to privacy. Stuart Thompson was a recognized innovator with British Telecom, where he led in the development of the high speed modems that introduced broadband internet. He has now used his high-speed expertise and ingenuity to develop an award-winning intelligent moving camera system that will passively observe and ignore innocent goings-on, but quickly alert human operators to suspicious or dangerous activity. In addition to crime-busting on Britain’s streets, Stuart Thompson claims the system can significantly enhance Homeland Security whilst unobtrusively safeguarding our schools or our elderly and vulnerable citizens in care homes and hospitals. Thompson is President and owner of Viseum UK. He reminds us how the Director General of MI5 recently warned that thousands of Islamic extremists living in the UK, currently saw their British home as a legitimate target (Gardner, 2013). He adds that the UK Home Office also admitted the E-Borders programme had failed to detect and intercept major crime suspects at our national borders (Travis, 2013). Elsewhere at another end of the spectrum, the CQC recently recommended surveillance camera installation in care homes to protect vulnerable adults from abuse by a few reckless and abusive members of staff (McGinty, 2013). In a busy, populated area, these all represent significant […]

FBI Exploring New Facial And Behavioral Recognition From Surveillance Cameras
(Before It’s News) B4INREMOTE-aHR0cDovLzIuYnAuYmxvZ3Nwb3QuY29tLy1kcU4zZmMtcW0zSS9VbnZ1bTYxeWlwSS9BQUFBQUFBQVZuOC83NXFBd2tNN0xIUS9zMjAwL0NDVFYtY2FtZXJhLW9uLXBvbGUtMzAweDIwMC5qcGc= image credit: freefotouk/Flickr Madison Ruppert Activist Post The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is reportedly considering new video analytic software that would enable identification of suspects in videos and still imagery based on both facial and behavioral recognition. This type of technology has been under development for quite a while, with a patent awarded for behavioral recognition software last year. Indeed, it has been said that the future of CCTV is in the field of behavioral recognition and so-called “remote biometrics.” However, the system that the FBI is working on could also scan footage against records of objects and places in addition to people, in order to detect possible suspects and their location. “The FBI is currently undertaking a major issue study of video and digital image processing and video/digital image analytic capabilities to identify current capabilities, assess gaps, and develop a roadmap for the FBI’s future video analytics architecture,” the bureau stated in a contracting notice published on Oct. 30. Contractors are to submit written proposals by Nov. 13 and up to 30 vendors will be invited to present their technology at FBI headquarters on Dec. 11. Unlike the facial recognition systems that are increasingly being rolled out across the United States with the FBI’s help , this technology would analyze backgrounds. The Department of Homeland Security, meanwhile, is funding research on more accurate long-distance facial recognition technology . The new technology would compute “the degree of similarity among pedestrians, graffiti designs, buildings in […]

The S series offers low-light performance, even in difficult lighting conditions, offering a true day/night operation. While the processing architecture Digic DV III and Digic Net II remains the same between the new series and Canons 2012 network security cameras, the internal programming has been re-engineered to deliver multiple H.264 and/or MJPEG streams in HD or lower resolutions. In addition to multi-streaming, the cameras can also do simultaneous streaming. The full range supports edge recording on microSD cards up to 64GB and features a new utility that can playback directly from the microSD card without the content being downloaded to a PC first. […]

Grocery Store Shelves Could Soon Watch While You Shop
Supermarket Decision Supermarket giant Mondel?z International is developing “smart shelves” to identify consumers’ age and gender while tracking their shopping habits. The company (formerly Kraft Foods), which makes Oreos, Trident gum, Wheat Thins, and a host of other snack foods, wants to use the technology — expected to be on supermarket shelves by 2015 — to better target their advertising, The Wall Street Journal’s Clint Boulton reports . “When people walk by, it’s a missed opportunity,” Mondel?z CIO Mark Dajani told the Journal. “We must know how the consumer behaves in the store.” Here’s how the technology would work: Sensors would be placed in the aisles where Mondel?z products are displayed. Using facial recognition technology provided by Microsoft’s Kinect , the devices would identify the age and gender of consumers perusing the aisles and track which people are most likely to purchase certain products. The data collected would be sent to Mondel?z in real-time. “Knowing that a consumer is showing interest in the product gives us the opportunity to engage with them real-time,” Mondelez spokeswoman Valerie Moens said in an e-mailed statement. The company plans to use the d ata collected to better target its advertising and discount offers to the groups most likely to buy certain products. The technology could also be used to alert the grocer when it’s time to reorder certain products. The sensors would not collect any photos, video or other personal information regarding consumers, according to Moens. “Privacy is of utmost importance, so Smart […]
