During the holiday season, retailers enjoy increases in store traffic but for loss prevention (LP) managers increases in shoppers and temporary employees make this time of year more challenging. Through this influx of business (and beyond), the LP managers must deal with losses stemming from organized retail crime (ORC), employee theft, and shoplifting. Retail supply chains and online retailer distribution centers also come under greater pressure as more goods are being handled and shipped.

As the physical security / video surveillance market continues to mature, you are seeing more and more attention paid to integrated solutions. Instead of solely looking at video management software (VMS), or video analytic software, or access control systems, you are now being drawn to VMS systems that work seamlessly with a wide range of additional capabilities such as video analytics, Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, and access control – just to name a few. Over the years, end-users have come to understand —even expect— advanced technologies like video analytics being part-and-parcel of the provided solution set. Security.World caught up recently with Paul Eaton, President of Convergence To Pixel, to talk more about integrating other organizational systems into video surveillance VMS systems.

A.C. Moore opened its first arts and crafts store in 1985 in Moorestown, New Jersey, United States. Today, the national retailer sells an assortment of merchandise in over 130 locations on the Eastern coast. With over 40,000 items offered at each store at any given time, A.C. Moore prides itself on offering its customers the best product selection, value and service. As a progressive retailer, A.C. Moore is always keen on implementing processes and technologies to keep its stores up-to-date and its customers happy. So when Steve Werner, Director of Loss Prevention, was brought onboard, he went straight to work on identifying areas to improve processes and refocus resources on the customer experience. Almost immediately, the process for reviewing cashier transactions came into focus. Store managers would spend over an hour every day reviewing cash register transactions, pointing the loss prevention (LP) team to dubious behaviors or suspicious activities, if they were spotted.

Video management software (VMS) with network cameras are being deployed across all of Paul Smith’s 45 stores as part of the UK-based retailer’s first company-wide IT refresh. Initially the new digital video system is being used for loss prevention but once it is fully in place worldwide by the end of 2015, Paul Smith plans to use it for business intelligence to assist retail operations management. Paul Smith has been an early adopter of IP and cloud-based services. In 2001 it migrated to IP telephony, installing a Cisco IPT network. Embracing the latest IT management approaches (including use of open-architected and Microsoft-based systems), the company has been able to maintain a relatively small network services team despite growth. Paul Smith has a retail presence in 35 countries. This approach means that when new IT challenges present themselves, Paul Smith’s Head of IT, Lee Bingham, pictured, looks for standards-based products that can be scaled up. He specifies that new systems and services must last a minimum of ten years because he simply does not have the manpower or budget to go on replacements of devices and software. Paul Smith’s legacy CCTV had grown organically as the group expanded. When the IT department was asked to take over running Paul Smith’s CCTV, Lee Bingham insisted that it must be moved to IP video and be visible on the corporate network: “If it’s not IP then it’s not IT, and therefore it made no sense to move it from our Facilities Management […]
As more organizations realize the intrinsic value of video in a physical security system, getting more value out of that video is becoming increasingly important. And those same organizations are learning of more affordable ways to record and store surveillance video with much longer retention times. Therefore, the number of video analytic installations is significantly […]
Nuheat SIGNATURE Gear Diary Nuheat Launches North America’s 1st WiFi Floor Heating Thermostat photo When we bought our house, one thing the builder was proud of was radiant heating installed throughout. One downside it is slow to respond – so when the temperature here went from +50 to -30 back to +40 within 5 days our house seemed to always be too hot or too cold. The upside? The floors were never cold! Now Nuheat, a maker of electric radiant heating systems, is introducing Nuheat SIGNATURE – the first WiFi controlled floor heater thermostat. The Nuheat SIGNATURE will give homeowners full access to all thermostat settings with wireless remote access through a smartphone app (iOS or Android) or a web browser. Changing the temperature or schedule, or viewing energy usage will all be at the homeowners’ fingertips. The Nuheat SIGNATURE is like no other in our industry,” said Wally Lo, Nuheat’s Product Manager. “It has been designed and developed exclusively for Nuheat by OJ Electronics and after over a year of development, we are extremely excited to bring it to market. Extensive market research from homeowners and contractors alike confirmed the market is expecting connectivity for remote access. A myriad of household products ranging from locks to lights to heating systems offer the ease of on-the-go control. Our new thermostat allows the user to activate the floor heat for vacation properties or, to simply turn up the heat for a cozy return home.” Here are some of the features: […]
