International City: No Access Card, No Entry

Dubai: A new access system that went live last Sunday in several clusters of Nakheel’s sprawling International City are proving to be a bane rather than a boon, residents told XPRESS. The new security feature, launched by regulatory authority Trakhees earlier this year, is estimated to affect thousands, including residents, restaurant, laundry and grocery delivery boys. Most of them have spoken out in unison against the new restrictions. Syrian Fadi Mohammad, a tenant in the Persia Cluster who owns a fast food joint in the adjoining France Cluster, is ill at ease with the new system on both counts. “I have yet to get an access card. It’s not my fault. My landlord hasn’t paid his service fees. It’s been a struggle to get into my apartment ever since this new system began a few days ago,” he says. “I am also at the receiving end as a service provider. My delivery boys end up spending more time as customers have to come down and open the doors to collect their orders,” he adds. Another Syrian resident, Loy, says his neighbour had to wait for almost 20 minutes for someone to arrive before he could enter the building around midnight after work because there was no watchman on duty at that time. When XPRESS checked, watchmen said they were letting in guests and delivery boys to avoid initial hiccups during their duty hours. Indian Pankaj Kumar who owns a one-bedroom apartment in the England Cluster, says acquiring a card […]

Too Close For Comfort: Portraits Of Strangers Taken Without Their Permission | Fine Art

Story Views Now: Last Hour: Last 24 Hours: Total: Wednesday, October 23, 2013 6:41 % of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents. (Before It’s News) Sheri_Lynn_Behr_Photography NYC-based photographer Sheri Lynn Behr ’s project NoSafeDistance addresses the idea of photography without permission—a concept practically unavoidable in what Behr calls today’s “post-privacy world and image obsessed society.” Separated only by glass store windows, Behr turns the camera on strangers just long enough to capture the surprise on the other side. Behr crops and enlarges the faces to the point of ambiguity in efforts to challenge our thoughts about anonymity and privacy. We recently asked her more about the project. Sheri_Lynn_Behr_Photography Sheri_Lynn_Behr_Photography What led you to start this project? “I started this project because I became very aware of how much photography is made without the permission of the subject. I’ve never liked being photographed myself, and I had been working on a project in NYC’s Chinatown, where the residents often turned away from my camera. At the same time, I started to notice how many security cameras were taking my picture as well. With NoSafeDistance , I wanted to make people aware that they are photographed without their permission. And since my reaction was to duck when I saw a strange camera pointed at me, I wanted to see what other people would do, in this age of smart phones and surveillance.” Sheri_Lynn_Behr_Photography Sheri_Lynn_Behr_Photography How did you find your subjects? “Just walking down the street, looking in […]

Dallmeier Video Surveillance System Enhances Security At National Portrait Gallery In London

A trial of Dallmeier IP/HD cameras in the shop area is enough to demonstrate the capabilities of Dallmeier HD technology Some of the existing analogue cameras were also replaced with Dallmeier high-resolution HD network cameras Founded in 1856, the aim of the National Portrait Gallery in London is “to promote through the medium of portraits the appreciation and understanding of the men and women who have made and are making British history and culture, as well as the understanding of portraiture in all media”. The Gallery holds the most extensive collection of portraits in the world. The collection is displayed in London and in a number of locations around the United Kingdom, including several houses managed by the National Trust. Like other national museums, the Gallery is supported both by government and increasingly by a large number of individuals, companies and foundations, as well as by the receipts from shops, events and ticketed exhibitions. One of the most successful events in the history of the gallery was held last year, in honour of Lucian Freud (1922-2011). The Lucian Freud Portraits exhibition consisted of 130 portraits painted by the great man, borrowed from museums and private collections all over the world. Over three months, it attracted a record 248,000 visitors. But before the exhibition could be opened to such acclaim, the existing video system had to be expanded and modernised. Latest IP HD technology The system has consisted of Dallmeier surveillance cameras and recorders for many years. Now, however, the […]

Shoppers Getting Ripped Off By Tiny, High-Tech Cash Register Spy Device

6 hours ago Police Picture # 2 Crooks who steal credit and debit card numbers have found a devious new way to snag this information. They’re using a small and relatively cheap piece of off-the-shelf technology to compromise computerized store cash registers. We know about this because a band of brazen thieves was caught on security cameras installing these high-tech skimmers on cash registers at the Nordstrom store in Aventura, Fla., two weeks ago. The skimmers are built into standard Ps2 cable connectors that plug into the back of a computer where customers can’t see them. They’re only about an inch long — and look so innocuous that even if employees saw them they might not suspect anything.  “It’s a little piece of plastic, usually purple, that fits into the port where your keyboard connects to your computer,” explained security analyst Brian Krebs, who first reported this story on his KrebsOnSecurity blog. “It intercepts any data that is sent on that communication channel, whether it’s keystrokes or somebody swiping a card through a terminal.” Ps2 Keystroke loggers have been available for years. They sell for as little as $40 and are marketed as “professional surveillance products.” Krebs said this is the first time he’s ever heard of them being used to skim card information from a retailer. Nordstrom confirmed that it had found and removed “unauthorized devices on a small number of cash registers” at their Aventura store.   “We take this situation seriously and have been working closely […]

Cambridge MA Blocks Surveillance Cameras

How one Mass city watches the watchers, and how others should follow suit On February 2, 2009, the Cambridge City Council voted in unanimous opposition to the installation of eight Department of Homeland Security cameras at major intersections on the basis that “the potential threats to invasion of privacy and individual civil liberties outweigh the current benefits” of accepting the DHS funds. While six such cameras were installed all the same, the council and a vocal citizenry has since successfully opposed their activation. At a follow-up meeting earlier this month, all nine Cambridge councilors reaffirmed their position: the cameras must remain off until police prove beyond doubt that their department has the capacity to balance investigative methods with civil liberties. Such aggressive civilian oversight of law enforcement should serve as a model not only for the Boston region, but for the whole country. Since 9-11, police chiefs, sheriffs, and commissioners have had an open invitation to request any range of surveillance and tactical gear from federal coffers, often without accountability checks to ensure that deployment squares with the Bill of Rights. Between DHS, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Defense, local overseers can secure every conceivable toy that they could ever covet without spending a dime of their own. From drones, to armored vehicles, to Long Range Acoustic Devices, which are essentially giant human dog whistles, it’s a veritable buffet via federal grants. Since these checks are written by the feds, such arrangements are often executed without […]

Grundig Launches New GCI-K2505B Low-Light Box IP-Camera

By Andy Ball on October 17, 2013 GCI-K2505B Grundig have announced the new GCI-K2505B true day / night box camera as the latest addition to the company’s comprehensive IP range. The high quality IP camera offers outstanding sensitivity at low-light levels. The camera remains in colour mode until 0.03 Lux, before switching to black and white mode, where its sensitivity extends to an incredible 0.005 Lux with no additional IR lighting. The GCI-K2505B uses a 2 Megapixel CMOS sensor with dual shutter and Progressive Scan technology to produce high quality, quad video streams at these exceptionally low light levels. Installers can select a range of resolutions for each video stream. Options include a single, 1080p stream at 50 frames per second (FPS) in H.264 or MJPEG formats; dual streams of 1080p and 720p at 50FPS; and Quad streams of 1080p, 2x 720p and CIF, simultaneously at 25 FPS. Andreas Franusic, product manager at Grundig, explains, “The high ‘frames per second’ rate increases low-light performance and enables real-time video recording from multiple streams simultaneously. The Quad stream technology allows efficient video transmission and storage, whilst saving network bandwidth. The streams can be optimized to suit applications, such as 1080p for NVR recording and lower resolution 720p, D1 or CIF video streams for monitor displays, PCs, tablets and smartphone viewing.” The GCI-K2505B is ONVIF S compatible, comes with a micro SD/SDHC memory card slot for alarm and scheduled image recording and has a power over Ethernet (PoE IEEE 802.3af) option, so […]

New Leader Takes The Helm At Firetide

As end user demand for immediate, on-demand access to video surveillance feeds has grown in recent years, so too has the need for reliable video transmission solutions. Firetide, a Silicon Valley-based provider of wireless mesh networks, is one of the companies looking to meet that demand and has more than 10,000 customers in 40 countries around the world. Earlier this year, Firetide announced a change in its senior leadership naming John McCool as the company’s new president and CEO. Prior to joining Firetide, McCool, who has a background in electrical engineering, spent the past 17 years at Cisco. At one point, McCool was in charge of the company’s switching and data center products before moving into a global sales role responsible for wireless switching, routing and security products. “At that point, I saw a lot of things in the market that were extremely exciting around networking,” explained McCool. “This entire trend – the change of networking from kind of an indoor, IT-oriented technology to moving to be embedded in devices and the need for those devices to be outdoors – and I got very intrigued with what Firetide was doing in that space and thought it was an excellent place to drive innovation.” Just last week, the company launched its new HotPort 5020 wireless infrastructure node , which is designed to allow users to place more devices at a lower cost over a mesh network. “What we noticed for large, city-wide, neighborhood-wide deployments is that people love (the Firetide […]

Oncam Grandeye 360-Degree Technology Chosen To Protect Ireland’s Shannon Airport

Oncam Grandeye, the global innovator in technology, security solutions and 360-degree surveillance cameras, has been awarded a contract for the Shannon Airport Authority. Glasgow-based Video Management Systems (VMS), which selected Oncam Grandeye’s technology, will be the local integrator on the project, and the cameras will be controlled and managed through Titan Vision, VMS’ IP CCTV video management and PSIM solution. Shannon Airport is located on the western-most part of Ireland and is considered to be the gateway between Europe and the Americas. It handles approximately 3 million people a year, and nearly 50,000 metric tons of freight gets transported through its cargo area. The facility is enormous, with 40 check-in desks, 5 baggage carousels and 14 boarding gates (including 6 air bridges). There are nearly 40 aircraft parking stands. The car-parks can hold more than 5,000 cars. John Francis, the security manager at Shannon Airport, faces myriad challenges, and he tackled the terminal first. 360-degree cameras have been placed at the boarding gates in the large, congested area used by low-cost airlines. The main reason for surveillance here is health and safety. “We’re looking for slips and trips,” says Francis. Other cameras are positioned in the arrivals area, which houses vending machines, ATM’s, car-hire desks and pay stations for the car park. “The PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom camera) was always looking the wrong way when something happened, and was sometimes left zoomed in by an operator,” he said. “This is never the case with the 360; we see everything.” Shannon needed […]

DIY Security Cameras – A Quick Overview

Like everything else in life you get many different brands, quality differences and specs on these things. The most expensive is not always the best, but don’t buy the cheapest either. Compare apples with apples. Start by determining what you require. Do you only want to see movement or do you actually want to see that it is a person wearing a blue cap with a moustache and a mole on his chin at 15 metres from the camera? You have to at least check what the resolution (TV lines) of the cameras are and if you are going to record the cameras, at what resolution the DVR records. In the past the cheaper DVRs recorded @ CIF which is an effective resolution of 352 x 288 pixels per camera while the preview on the screen was usually much higher (e.g. 2CIF or 4CIF). A lot of people made the mistake by not noticing that the recorded resolution was much lower than the previewed resolution, when they looked at the advertised specs. In layman’s term that means that when you saw the guy walking past the camera everything looked fine on the monitor, but when you played back the recording you could not determine if it was a dog or a human in the picture. Usually you would want a recording resolution of at least 4CIF or D1 which is an effective resolution of 704 × 576 pixels. Lately some of the recorders records at HD (1280 x 720) […]

An astonishing video has captured the moment that a lazy USPS worker drove across a homeowner’s garden so they could deliver small packages to the door. The footage shows a female postal worker nonchalantly driving across the lawn and its sprinkler system, before pulling up outside the home, climbing from the vehicle and taking just a few steps. Caught on Camera: Burglar Hits Northwest Omaha Businesses Over The Weekend

Home > News OMAHA, NE – Douglas County authorities are investigating a string of burglaries on Omaha’s northwest side. Local business owners say someone hit several of them early Sunday morning. At least three were broken into at 144 th and Fort. The suspect smashed windows to get in, taking money, electronics, and other items.   “This is my second home. And I take pride in this. RESEARCH: Camera Equipment Manufacturing In China

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 14, 2013 Revenue for the Camera Equipment Manufacturing industry in China is expected to total $15.3 billion in 2013, says IBISWorld. Growth over the past five years has been estimated at 6.5% annually. China has become the world’s largest production base for camera equipment, and digital cameras have gradually become the dominant products. Revenue generated from traditional film cameras is low and these sales tend to be concentrated in rural areas and niche markets. An estimated 90.0% of industry output in 2013 will be digital camera equipment, up from about 41.0% in 2004, says IBISWorld. Basic digital cameras are no longer a luxury good for many Chinese people. The greatest demand for digital cameras comes from economically developed regions of China, such as large provincial capitals and coastal areas, says IBISWorld. There are about 130 enterprises operating within this industry in 2013, and the top four industry participants – Foshan Pulihua, Canon, Samsung, and Sony – hold a combined share of about 73.3% of total industry revenue. The concentration level differs across China’s different regions, however. Future growth for the camera equipment manufacturing industry in China will be mainly due to steady increases in domestic demand over the coming years and declining final prices. IBISWorld also anticipates that the market share of domestic participants will rise with improvements in technology and ongoing brand-building.
