US Requires Drones to Be Registered
The U.S. Department of Transportation will require recreational drone operators to register their aircraft with the federal government. A new task force has been formed to determine which aircraft should be exempt from the registration The federal government will seek to register all drones, including the lighter, remote-controlled crafts favored by hobbyists, so it can track down any drone pilots who collide with other aircraft or violate rules for safe flights. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said recently the new rules will apply to hobbyists as well as commercial drone operators, who already register.
N.J. Bill Would Ease Cops’ Access to Private Videos
A New Jersey bill designed to make it easier for law enforcement to use private, outdoor video cameras in investigations was approved earlier this week by an Assembly panel. The legislation would let municipalities, through an ordinance, establish a registry that would allow any owner of a private outdoor video surveillance camera to voluntarily register the camera with the local police department.

Cleveland police – outside of Brisbane, Australia, have called for residents and businesses with security cameras installed to get in touch and help prevent crime. Officers have established a registry database cataloging the location of cameras at private dwellings, offices, and retailers across the city. If a crime happens near one of the cameras, police will ask the device’s owner for the footage around the time of the offence to see if it yields any evidence.
NJ Bill Calling for Police Registry of Security Cameras Coming Into Focus
When a bad guy abducted a woman off the street in Philadelphia a few weeks ago and she was rescued when his car was located in Maryland, I marveled at the black box technology that found the vehicle. Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, D-Essex, NJ, was even more impressed with a nearby store’s video camera that recorded the entire incident and identified the car. So he crafted bill A-3843 permitting a municipality to enact an ordinance establishing a private outdoor video surveillance camera registry, requiring owners of such cameras to register them with police.
Rohnert Park CA PD Adds Video Registry to Crime Fighting Toolkit
Rohnert Park, CA, police are encouraging anyone with a security camera to join a new registry. Restaurant owner Isidro Velasco told ABC7 News the best investment he ever made was four security cameras that watch over his restaurant. The database in back of his restaurant records everything the camera sees. The cameras have come in handy when stuff behind the bar went missing. Valasco said he supports a plan by Rohnert Park police for a registry of security cameras to help them fight crime faster.
