Sochi Visitors Face Armed Guards, Full-Body Scanners, Security Cameras

Online Games Government Grants Parking Tickets On guard: Military police officers at a train station in Sochi. Photo: Reuters Sochi: Fans of downhill skiing would be forgiven for thinking they had arrived at a military base when showing up in Sochi for the Winter Olympics. Ticket holders must walk under an array of cameras hooked up to face -recognition software before traversing the checkpoints and the mesh fences to make their way beyond the armed guards . If picked out, they then have to step into a full-body scanner. All spectators must pass through metal detectors twice and present their documents three times. "The guests are the lucky ones," said a man who works for a logistics company that helped organise the opening ceremony. "The staff isn’t. I spend hours getting through security checks every day." While heightened scrutiny is the norm at such events, the edges are sharper in the Russian Black Sea resort town following a spate of terrorist bombings that killed more than 30 people. An Islamic militant group last week posted a video threatening to deliver a "present" for visitors to Sochi, which was sealed off on January 7 as Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to do everything to make the games safe without "depressing participants". The government has deployed 40,000 police and special services officers. "Of course these measures are a bit annoying," said the head of Russia’s curling federation,  Dmitry Svishev. "But then you think about what efforts are taken to guarantee the […]

Jersey City Police “Eye In The Sky” Monitoring Journal Square Travelers

Holiday shoppers and travelers passing through Journal Square will be under the watchful gaze of a Jersey City Police Department ?eye in the sky? which is an elevated booth that can accommodate police officers and is fitted with closed circuit video cameras, officials said today. The ?eye in the sky? is located on Journal Square Plaza near the fountain at Kennedy Boulevard and Bergen Avenue. It stands about 25-feet-tall, has flood lights, cameras pointed in several directions, the capacity to transmit video live for officers to monitor at a remote location and it records all video captured by its cameras. ?It is there for the high volume of people during the holiday season,? Jersey City Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said this afternoon. ?The police department is constantly redeploying its assets throughout the city.? A 36-year-old Jersey City man making his commute home at 5:20 p.m. tonight said he imagines the tower is a useful deterrent to thieves and other criminals but noted, ?I didn’t even notice it was there? after having walking past the imposing structure. A cab driver waiting to pick up passengers nearby said he didn’t feel the location of the surveillance tower was well chosen. He pointed at three security cameras nearby on the side of Duane Reade and Santander Bank which are apparently monitored by the Port Authority, saying ?I don?t know why they put it there, there are cameras everywhere here.? The cabbie added, ?If someone wants to do something, then they are […]

Social Media Helps Solve Burglary Of Skateboards At Woodland CA Business

Ryan Smith of SorD skate shop in Woodland posted this photograph on Facebook to help catch suspects who allegedly stole from the store on Sunday. As social media continues to grow, the applications of such media are expanding as well. Ryan Smith, a Woodland small business owner, is now a believer in this. Smith utilized Facebook to identify the criminals that stole four skateboards from SorD skate shop on Sunday. Smith, co-owner of the shop on Main Street, was in the back of the store conducting inventory around 6 p.m. when he heard the sound of the door opening. By the time he could get to the front of the store, it was too late. Four skateboards were missing from the collection. Smith ran outside trying to catch a glimpse of who took the boards, but there was no one there. After filing a report with the Woodland Police Department that night, Smith did some investigating of his own. Ryan Smith, Co-owner of SorD skate shop on Main Street, used Facebook to help the four people that stole from the store on Sunday. There are 15 security cameras set up throughout the store, but three were all he needed. He posted the footage on Facebook at 8:30 p.m., as well as a screen shot of the individuals involved, and asked the community for help in identifying them. By 9 p.m., tips were already flooding the company’s Facebook page. Due to the large community response to the video, which had […]

CaughtOnCamera: SUV Plows Into House

suv crashes home An SUV is seen crashing into a Texas home on Dec. 30, captured by security cameras. (Photo: WFAA-TV, Dallas) Tarrant County, TEXAS — First, you see the lights approaching. Then, the impact makes you cringe. Again. And again. And again. Four cameras aimed in four directions clearly capture a hit-and-run, with Rick and Mary Whitbeck’s house falling victim to a speeding SUV. The Whitbecks were out of town Monday morning when a white SUV plowed into their home at 3:32 a.m., according to the camera’s clock. Seconds later, cameras show the SUV in reverse and backing out of the big mess. The Whitbecks have eight security cameras at their home, installed because they’d been burglarized. Four cameras are in the front yard. They covered up the hole and shored up the roof, but they face thousands of dollars in repair to a home they totally renovated themselves. They hope the video leads to the driver being caught, they said.

Differentiating CCD And CMOS Image Sensors

Source: Alf Chang | Date: 12/25/2013 Related tags: Cmos , CCD , CompoSec A core component of security cameras, CCD and CMOS image sensors have in the last few years parted ways in terms of applications and characteristics, sensitivity, noise reduction and energy consumption. At the same number of pixels, CCD sensors have outperformed CMOS sensors in sensitivity; CCD sensors also take in more light than CMOS sensors of the same size. In real-world applications, however, CMOS sensors deliver the same level of performance as their CCD counterparts in low-light cameras. This makes CMOS sensors the preferred image sensor for HD cameras. What to Look for in a CMOS Sensor In theory, CCD sensors allow a higher resolution than CMOS sensors of the same size. In practice, image sensor suppliers overcome this simply by making larger image sensors since security cameras do not have space constraints. Major image sensor suppliers for the security market like Aptina, Omnivision, Sony and Sharp, use this advantage to continue to enhance the performance of CMOS image sensors. Currently, most HD cameras on the market use 1/1.8”, 1/2.5”, 1/2.7” or 1/2.8” image sensors. By testing IP megapixel cameras on the market, it is possible to find a CMOS sensor that is practical in both price and performance.

Law Enforcement Can Identify Suspects From Reflections In Your Eye

Identifying suspects from reflections in the eye is not just fodder for police drama. It’s reality, says a new study led by researchers from the University of York and University of Glasgow. The report, “Identifiable Images of Bystanders Extracted from Corneal Reflections,” reveals how investigators can glean recognizable reflections from witness’ eyes.  The scientists positioned a group of eight people in front of “bystanders” and, using a 30 megapixel digital camera,  photographed the latter’s faces in high resolution.  By zooming in on the eyes, they managed to extract facial images that—though fuzzy or highly pixelated—were still identifiable.  Although the experiment was conducted in a controlled setting, corneal reflections can have a major impact for law enforcement  out in the field , particularly since  mobile devices are quickly becoming high-quality cameras .  During criminal investigations, smartphones and cameras are often seized as evidence. After the bombing of the Boston Marathon in April, footage from bystanders and security cameras played a key role in identifying the suspects.  Image courtesy of research article “ Identifiable Images of Bystanders Extracted from Corneal Reflections.”  Other Articles:

Scott Stell Park after reports of vandalism and thefts. Signage at the park warns visitors to protect their valuables. Marcus E. Howard/Savannah Morning News </p> Thievery, vandalism and sexcapades continue to wreak havoc at Chatham County’s L. Scott Stell Park. At the request of the county Public Works and Park Services Department, Chatham County commissioners have approved a contract to buy four additional high-definition surveillance cameras at the park just off Little Neck Road with the hope of discouraging further problems. The thefts and repairs resulting from the vandalism, according to department officials, have cost the county an estimated $10,000. “Because the place is so isolated, they’ve stolen equipment we have, like weed eaters and lawnmowers,” said Lorenzo Bryant, the department’s recreation manager. “They have a lot of vandalism that occurs out there; so you have to go out on a regular basis.” The problems have occurred over the past four years, according to officials. Last year, thieves twice broke into a storage shed and stole a utility vehicle. About 300-feet of chain link fencing has also been taken. Security cameras, as well as a gate, were installed near the park’s shed in the summer of 2012 at the large recreation park, which has […]

UPDATE: Mechanicsville Restaurant Owner Arrested For Security Cameras In Bathroom

MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) – The owner of a Mechanicsville restaurant is facing charges for having security cameras in the bathroom. Dennis Smith, 54, owns the Calabash Seafood Restaurant and Midway Lounge. Smith was arrested Wednesday, and charged with one count of unlawful videotaping. Smith says he’s dealt with repeated, expensive vandalism in the mens’ bathrooms of his restaurant. He says the cameras are legal, since they weren’t angled towards anyone’s private areas. However, Smith got backlash from some customers over privacy rights. Investigators seem to agree, after an investigation, and now charges. Cameras in bathrooms are legal in Virginia, according to NBC 12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin, as long as no one’s private areas are recorded. The owner’s wife says the cameras have been moved into the hallway of the restaurant. Smith is awaiting trial in Hanover County Circuit Court. No Security Cameras On Univ Of British Columbia Campus Until Report Completed

A University of British Columbia student studies under fall foliage on the campus in Vancouver, B.C., on Wednesday October 30, 2013. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck ORG XMIT: VCRD114 VANCOUVER — The University of B.C. is considering installing closed circuit cameras in public areas, but won’t do so until a report on campus security is completed next year. An interim report — which won’t be available until late January at the earliest — is part of an initiative to investigate the level of security at UBC after six women were attacked on the Vancouver campus. Lucie McNeill, UBC’s director of public affairs, said Friday that Barry Eccleton, director of campus security, is heading up the task force, which is examining the possibility of cameras along with several other safety measures. Eccleton will be making recommendations in a report to President Stephen Toope. McNeill said the president wouldn’t be making any move regarding security cameras without further consultation with the campus community because of concerns around privacy and civil liberties. "It’s not something he, by fiat, would impose," she said. "There would be some consultation." Since April, there have been six sexual assaults on women on campus. The six attacks occurred April 19, May 19, Sept. 28, Oct. 13, Oct. 19 and Oct. 27. According to a description released by the RCMP, the suspect is Caucasian with slightly dark, tanned or olive skin, in his mid to late 20s, between 1.73 m (5’8") and 1.87 m (6’2"), with a thin build […]

School Campus Security Becomes Increased Priority Since Shootings

School security has become more of a priority — especially for students and parents — in light of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting tragedy in Newtown, Conn. Almost four months before Sandy Hook, gunfire rang out at Perry Hall High School in Baltimore County, leaving one student in the hospital and another behind bars. Mobile users tap here for video. It was Aug. 26, 2012, on the first day of school when police said a Perry Hall student fired the shot that hit his classmate in the school’s cafeteria. The incident brought about a number of changes in and outside of county school buildings, from metal detectors to an increased police presence to adding new security cameras. Already, students from across the district have taken notice. "In the office, they check your ID and they have precautions such as that, but there’s still also the chance that it can happen anywhere," said Isabelle Nowicki-Butschky, a student. The county promoted Dale Rauenzahn to a newly created position as executive director of school safety and security. "All schools have camera systems, all schools have a visitor system, so we are tightening it up so it’s not a phase-in anymore. We do it very quickly and make sure all schools have the same protections across the board," Rauenzahn said. "You had the Perry Hall situation and then not long after that, you had Sandy Hook. How did that change what you had to do?" WBAL-TV 11 News Education Alert reporter Tim […]

Lincoln Police: Downtown Security Cameras To Be Turned On

Home / Headlines List / Article Lincoln, Neb.– Lincoln Police say they’re turning on security cameras in downtown in an effort to curb crime in the area. The cameras were installed at 14th & O Streets in November 2012, but haven’t been turned on until now. According to Lincoln Police Chief Jim Peschong, in one year the city sees over 4,000 reported assaults, 146 of those happened at that intersection. That’s more than any other part of the city and now the intersection is at its highest level of crime, according to Peschong. He hopes the cameras will help catch people causing trouble, but some wonder if they will keep the mischief away or just customers in general. Some downtown business owners told city leaders in July that they’re worried that new security cameras may scare customers away. “It is another tool to portray 14th & O Street inaccurate,” said Scott Hatfield, who has owned Duffy’s Tavern for six years. Officials say in addition to helping the police department identify those involved in a crime, police say the footage can serve as evidence in court. ACLU: More Surveillance Cameras Don’t Make You Safer

video.surveillance.205×205.jpg Big images below. In a post last month , we told you about a new website called CommunityCam , which planned to use crowd-sourcing techniques to document and map all the security cameras in public areas throughout Denver and other nearby areas . The site’s founder mainly portrayed such surveillance devices as good things — no surprise, given that his main company sells and markets them. But the ACLU of Boulder’s Judd Golden doesn’t equate more cameras with more safety and is concerned about other possible infringements on personal privacy as they proliferate. Golden isn’t new to this issue. Back in August, he talked with us about license-plate readers , which he said had the technical capability of allowing authorities to track every driver in Boulder and beyond . So it’s no surprise he looked at the CommunityCam concept with a critical eye. Here’s a CommunityCam screen capture of Colorado from our original post. community.cam.denver.1.jpg Next, take a closer look at Denver metro, with designations for the number of cameras in assorted suburbs, plus Boulder and the city itself: community.cam.denver.2.jpg Finally, here’s a zoom-in of downtown Denver, with icons marking the locations for dozens of cameras, many just steps away from each other: community.cam.denver.3.jpg In the view of CommunityCam’s Josh Daniels, maps like these provide locals with “primarily social benefits — things like being able to plan safer, monitored routes for jogging, biking and walking. Obviously, Denver has a very active outdoor population of people, and this allows […]

Mechanicsville VA Bathroom Surveillance Cameras Under Investigation

MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) – Controversy is getting served up at Mechanicsville’s Calabash Seafood Restaurant & Midway Lounge. Owner Dennis Smith installed security cameras in the men’s bathrooms, back in September. Smith says he’s paid heavy costs for repairs after repeated bathroom vandalism. He maintains no privacy laws are being violated, since no guest’s private areas are being recorded. However, the Hanover Sheriff’s Office is now investigating the camera situation. Officers executed a search warrant. The cameras were shut off. Smith says investigators are reviewing the footage. Customer Victor Little says he was shocked to spot the cameras, while having dinner at the restaurant Saturday evening. He took cell phone video of the surveillance camera, situated on the ceiling above a stall. “I was startled… I couldn’t believe there was a camera in the men’s room,” said Little. Smith says the bathrooms have been a target of damage, during the span of the restaurant’s 34 years. Smith describes an incident in August that totaled $1,000. “I had a customer go in the men’s room and tear a urinal completely off the wall, with tile…(then the man) broke a toilet,” recounted Smith of the damage. However, the cameras have caused other problems. One man was charged for ripping out one of the cameras, back in September. He says he believed his privacy rights were being violated. The incident also prompted the Hanover Sheriff’s investigation into whether any privacy laws are being broken. NBC12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin says security cameras are […]

Venice FL Installing 13 Crime-Fighting Cameras

VENICE – In an effort to deter vandalism and other crimes, the city is installing 13 cameras at some of its most frequented public places. Six security cameras now look over the bathrooms at Centennial Park downtown, while four others have been added to South Jetty Park. Three more are coming to the Venice Fishing Pier. John Veneziano, director of Venice Public Works, said the cameras were installed as a deterrent — not to spy on citizens. “Who has the time to monitor all that footage?” Veneziano said. “We’re working to make people understand that they can’t just destroy things without consequence.” Veneziano said the city spent $50,000 remodeling the park’s bathrooms after a string of vandalism this fall in which a wall was covered by graffiti, a urinal was ripped from another wall and fixtures, including a paper towel dispenser, were stolen. Centennial Park is not the only prominent public space damaged recently by vandals. Railings at the the Fishing Pier were destroyed. Piles of fish guts have been left on the wooden walkway for morning joggers to step in. Compare those expenses, Veneziano says, to the $1,500 the city spent to put security cameras in all three parks. Not everyone thinks the cameras are a good idea. Greater security means more intrusion by the government, warns Andrea Mogensen, vice president of the Sarasota chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. Mogenson said multiple cameras allow law enforcement or others to follow a person’s movements without a warrant […]

DIY Security Cameras – A Quick Overview

Like everything else in life you get many different brands, quality differences and specs on these things. The most expensive is not always the best, but don’t buy the cheapest either. Compare apples with apples. Start by determining what you require. Do you only want to see movement or do you actually want to see that it is a person wearing a blue cap with a moustache and a mole on his chin at 15 metres from the camera? You have to at least check what the resolution (TV lines) of the cameras are and if you are going to record the cameras, at what resolution the DVR records. In the past the cheaper DVRs recorded @ CIF which is an effective resolution of 352 x 288 pixels per camera while the preview on the screen was usually much higher (e.g. 2CIF or 4CIF). A lot of people made the mistake by not noticing that the recorded resolution was much lower than the previewed resolution, when they looked at the advertised specs. In layman’s term that means that when you saw the guy walking past the camera everything looked fine on the monitor, but when you played back the recording you could not determine if it was a dog or a human in the picture. Usually you would want a recording resolution of at least 4CIF or D1 which is an effective resolution of 704 × 576 pixels. Lately some of the recorders records at HD (1280 x 720) […]
