EET Europarts Saves Money With Iqinvision

16-12-2013 EET Europarts is relying on a combined Iqinvision-Milestone advanced IP video surveillance solution to document all transactions, improve customer service, and enhance overall productivity. With annual sales topping $250 million, EET Europarts is one of the largest distributors of IT products and parts to more than 24 countries in Europe. The 113,000 square foot (10,500 square metre) Logistics Center is located in Ballerup, Denmark, where the vast majority of shipments originate, and ships an average of 3,000 packages daily. A few years ago, EET’s management sought to improve operations by more effectively documenting for their customers that the correct products had been accurately packaged and sent. This would help reduce employee errors and provide an audit trail to more efficiently solve any packaging mistakes. Timely, accurate documentation of all shipments would also improve customer service and customer relationships, and cut costs that EET normally had to cover in the event of shipping error claims. The solution to EET Europarts’ challenges proved to be right under their noses, sitting on the shelves of the warehouse:  since 2009, the company had been a distributor of Iqinvision HD megapixel network cameras. The company chose to optimise their logistics processes with Iqeye network cameras for their excellent image quality and high reliability. Further, Iqeye cameras are quite easy to set up and operate. To view, record and export the video from the cameras, EET Europarts chose Xprotect from Milestone Systems, the global industry leader in open platform IP video management software. To […]

USPTO Grants Mobotix’s Requests For Patent Review

New York, December 18, 2013. MOBOTIX Corp. succeeded again in a patent dispute with San Antonio, Texas-based e-Watch Inc. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted MOBOTIX Corp.’s requests for review of four patents owned by e-Watch Inc. According to the USPTO, information presented by MOBOTIX Corp. established that there is a reasonable likelihood that MOBOTIX Corp. would prevail in showing unpatentability of the challenged patent claims. Third-party publications found through extensive search as well as documentation and presentations published by MOBOTIX at the CeBIT trade fair in Hanover, Germany, in February 2000 show that the contents of the patent claims had been disclosed prior to the application for patent. The four patents are cause of action in a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Texas-based e-Watch Inc. at the U.S federal court in San Antonio (Texas). In June, the court granted MOBOTIX Corp.’s motion for stay of the litigation pending review of the validity of the patents at the USPTO and confirmed the view of MOBOTIX Corp. that the patent lawsuit will be rendered irrelevant if the claims of the patents are cancelled in the review proceedings at the USPTO . MOBOTIX Corp. holds that the claims of the four patents are unpatentable and consequently requested cancellation of the patents at the USPTO. The requests not only comprise the claims asserted in the lawsuit but above that challenge almost all claims of the four patents. “We are pleased that the USPTO granted our requests for patent review. This serves […]

Frost & Sullivan: Rapid Indian Infrastructure Expansion To Accelerate Adoption of Video Surveillance-as-a-Service Solutions

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Wednesday, December 18, 2013 — (Business Wire India) As services have only just begun to roll out, the video surveillance-as-a-service (VSaaS) market in India is still at a nascent stage. Nevertheless, the deployment of cloud-based models, Government efforts to improve IT infrastructure, and rising awareness on the benefits of robust surveillance solutions will spur implementation of VSaaS. Considering the critical nature of providing video surveillance services, cementing the first mover advantage in this market is crucial for market participants. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan ( http://www.electronics.frost.com ), Strategic Analysis of Video Surveillance-as-a-Service Market in India , finds that while there were only 20,898 camera sites which could have been serviced by VSaaS solutions in 2012, the addressable market for VSaaS will rise steeply post 2016 due to government policies on electronics coming to fruition and the completion of several infrastructure projects to reach 441,742 units in 2018. “Increased infrastructure spending and the projected growth of multi-brand retail will fuel the VSaaS market in India. The cost and business benefits for end users, including better streamlined surveillance expenditure for enterprises, will further boost VSaaS popularity in the country” said Frost & Sullivan Analyst. Moreover, the transition to more efficient video compression technologies will enhance the value for customers and encourage VSaaS usage. The availability of robust bandwidth, along with storage will become key differentiators for the market. However, low penetration of broadband in India and relatively slow uptake of video surveillance will pose a challenge to […]

Video Surveillance Cameras: The Good, The Bad, And The Hype – Lessons From Boston

We hear it again and again. Video surveillance cameras can accomplish what humans can’t. There’s simply no way, we are told, in a situation like the Boston Marathon bombing, with all the thousands of people in attendance, to be able to track suspects without video footage of the scene. To try to rely merely on eyewitnesses in that case is just too difficult, if not impossible, a real case of sensory overload. The problem is that it’s not entirely true. Law enforcement, through video surveillance footage, clearly narrowed down who the suspects were. However, part of the reason they could identify them was because one of the injured, a man who lost both legs to the bomb, clearly identified an individual putting down a bag just before the blast. With the help of a sketch artist and subsequent video footage, a suspect was clearly identified. Instead of being able to plan another attack, the two brothers were suddenly on the run, and in a matter of couple of days one was dead, another captured.  However, it was the combination of human intelligence and video surveillance technology that made this possible, not exclusively one or the other. After this terrible tragedy, some have asked, “But does this now mean that cameras will now be everywhere? What about privacy?” It’s hard to believe that in the year 2013 that question is still being asked. The reality is: cameras more and more are everywhere. Try to walk through any major metropolitan area […]

IHS: Top 10 Video Surveillance Trends for 2014

As 2013 draws to a close, research firm IHS has released its predictions of video surveillance trends for 2014. As in years past, IHS expects demand for video surveillance solutions to increase, forecasting the global market to grow by more than 12 percent compared to 2013. IHS also believes the emergence of crowd sourcing video surveillance data collection will be a major factor within the industry. The following was written by Niall Jenkins, IHS research manager of video surveillance and security services, about how these expected trends will impact the industry. Video Surveillance: The Star Markets for 2014 IHS has been researching the video surveillance equipment market for more than 10 years. During this time, the market has grown quickly, most years at a double digit rate. The year 2014 will be no exception. IHS forecasts that the global market will grow by more than 12 percent compared to 2013. Within the global market, IHS has identified fixed-dome and 180°/360° network cameras as the fastest growing product segments, and the city surveillance and utilities/energy sectors as the vertical markets to watch. Big Data: Crowd Sourcing Video Surveillance and Social Media Analytics The prevalence of smart phones, with cameras and internet connectivity – combined with social media apps such as Vine or Instagram – has led to the first “crowd sourced” data collection for an investigation in 2013, following the Boston Marathon bombings. Now that the trend has begun, IHS predicts it is likely that police forces will increasingly request, […]

Judge Deals Blow To NSA Phone Data Program

HC-130J aircraft In May 2013, a P-3 Orion patrol aircraft of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) cued the CGC Bertholf to a target several hundred miles off Costa Rica in the eastern Pacific. The national security cutter (NSC) launched a ScanEagle unmanned aircraft that maintained streaming video surveillance on the target and followed up with an armed MH-65D Dolphin multi-mission cutter helicopter. The arrest ultimately made by the crew of a long range interceptor cutterboat netted 1,250 pounds of cocaine and a half-dozen smuggling suspects. It also illustrated the seamless integration of air and sea assets for homeland defense. Coast Guard Vice Commandant Vice Adm. John P. Currier subsequently told Congress, “This is exactly how the system should work, and we’re very gratified to see this. The level of interoperability was simply not available with our legacy assets. It demonstrates how we apply these updated capabilities to defeat the threats in the offshore environment – and I would underscore the offshore environment is our area of greatest risk.” The Coast Guard is the maritime arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) , and Coast Guard aviation is essential to the layered security measures meant to deter, detect, interdict, and neutralize maritime threats before they reach American shores. In June, the crew of an HC-144A Ocean Sentry , a medium range surveillance aircraft (MRSA) used their sensors to spot a go-fast smuggling boat south of Puerto Rico. U.S. and Dutch vessels seized the smuggler suspects, and Ocean […]

License Plate Scanners Suspended In Boston Over Privacy Concerns

Little by little, we are beginning to see a roll-back of some of the surveillance state. From highways to small towns, the high-tech surveillance grid is being exposed and is provoking outrage among fully informed citizens. Recently, we saw Seattle police deactivate a Wi-Fi surveillance network , after it was exposed that the little white boxes identified across the city were really a mesh network that could surveil any member of the public possessing an Internet-ready device. The same is beginning to happen with license plate readers, where we can offer a couple of notable victories that are setting a precedent for eliminating this intrusive technology across the board. The Big Brother Police State has sought to convince citizens that any time they leave their house, they are entering the public domain; a place where there can be no expectation of privacy. The fact that the government should photo document your every movement and store it for later retrieval is anathema to a free society. Nevertheless, police departments everywhere have expanded these programs with little to no public discussion. This mentality took shape in locations that have fallen under the 100-mile deep perimeter around the U.S. defined as the border – also called the “Constitution-Free Zone.” However, much in the same way that the […]

PSIM Certified CPR Dummy Home Security Systems

CPR Dummy Security System I just read a story about a man from Detroit that uses CPR manikins as part of his home security.  He’s dressed them up in clothing and placed them by windows and doorways.  And so far, it seems to have worked.  He got the idea from someone that was using the same tactic across town from him.  I wonder if that person didn’t get the idea from a scene in the movie  Home Alone , where Kevin McCallister uses a variety of manikins and other human shaped items to fool some thieves into thinking that there was a party going on. This is on top of other security provisions including a pair of guard dogs, flood lights, alarms, bars on doors and windows, and two re-enforced doors.  He’s had police officers stop, take a look, and then tell him what a great idea it was.  He has also placed security cameras in their eyes and mouths from time to time. If you’re just driving past the house, you might glance over and think there are real people sitting there, and you wouldn’t be the first.  “A car will come by and they pick my place because I keep it nice. They’ll slow down, see the dummies and take off. They come back around and look again. Eventually if they figure out they are dummies they are also figuring out that now they’re being watched. They keep moving. They don’t stop,” he said.  “What’s behind those […]

Mechanicsville VA Bathroom Surveillance Cameras Under Investigation

MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) – Controversy is getting served up at Mechanicsville’s Calabash Seafood Restaurant & Midway Lounge. Owner Dennis Smith installed security cameras in the men’s bathrooms, back in September. Smith says he’s paid heavy costs for repairs after repeated bathroom vandalism. He maintains no privacy laws are being violated, since no guest’s private areas are being recorded. However, the Hanover Sheriff’s Office is now investigating the camera situation. Officers executed a search warrant. The cameras were shut off. Smith says investigators are reviewing the footage. Customer Victor Little says he was shocked to spot the cameras, while having dinner at the restaurant Saturday evening. He took cell phone video of the surveillance camera, situated on the ceiling above a stall. “I was startled… I couldn’t believe there was a camera in the men’s room,” said Little. Smith says the bathrooms have been a target of damage, during the span of the restaurant’s 34 years. Smith describes an incident in August that totaled $1,000. “I had a customer go in the men’s room and tear a urinal completely off the wall, with tile…(then the man) broke a toilet,” recounted Smith of the damage. However, the cameras have caused other problems. One man was charged for ripping out one of the cameras, back in September. He says he believed his privacy rights were being violated. The incident also prompted the Hanover Sheriff’s investigation into whether any privacy laws are being broken. NBC12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin says security cameras are […]

300-Pound ?R2-D2? Resembling Robot Is New Breed Of Crime-Fighting Machine

300 Pound R2 D2 like Robot is New Breed of Crime Fighting Machine The 300 pound R5 Autonomous Data Machine looks like a hybrid of R2-D2 and the robot from Lost in Space. Photo: Knightscope A Californian company, Knightscope , has developed a Robocop-on-wheels, which bears a striking resemblance to the Star Wars’ R2-D2.  The mobile robot, known as the K5 Autonomous Data Machine, was created in the wake of Sandy Hook school shooting and has a mission to “cut crime by 50 per cent” “We founded Knightscope after what happened … you are never going to have an armed officer in every school,” said William Santana Li, a co-founder of the company. The K5 Autonomous Data Machine is intended “to augment private security services on corporate campuses and in large, vacant buildings and warehouses,” according to its developer, Knightscope, which added, “Tedious and monotonous monitoring should be handled by the K5, leaving ‘hands-on’ activities to security personnel.” The K5′s weapons to fight crime and deter criminals are a “video camera, thermal imaging sensors, a laser range finder, radar, air quality sensors and a microphone.” All these are intended to alert you should it find anything out-of-the-ordinary as it patrols a “pre-planned route”. Mr. Li envisions the K5 to have wireless access to a data server where it could recognise faces and license plates to identify crooks in the act. He even goes one-step further into Hollywood fantasy by expressing a desire to employ “precog” – a crime-prediction process […]

EFF Amicus Brief: Video Surveillance Of A Home For A Month Without A Warrant Violates Fourth Amendment

Profile image (Before It’s News) Just because a jogger can see the outside of your home on a public street doesn’t mean you’ve surrendered all your privacy expectations in the home. However, that seemingly obvious concept is being put to the test in a federal criminal case in Washington state, which involves the constitutionality of using a camera mounted on a pole outside a house to allow the police to watch the home for almost a month. Senior District Court Judge Edward Shea invited EFF to submit an amicus brief in the case and Monday we filed our brief , arguing prolonged warrantless video surveillance violates the Fourth Amendment .  In United States v. Vargas , local police in Franklin County, Washington suspected Leonel Vargas of drug trafficking and in April 2013, installed a pole camera on a public road overlooking Vargas’ rural home . They did not get a search warrant to install or use the camera, which was pointed squarely at the front door and driveway of the home. Officers had the ability to pan the camera around and zoom in and out all from the comfort of the police station. They watched the outside of Vargas’ home for more than a month, taking notice of who visited him and what cars they were driving. They observed no criminal activity until a month after they began snooping, when officers saw him shooting a gun at beer bottles in what appeared to be target practice. Because the officer had […]

NYPD Wants Stores To Turn Security Cameras Toward Streets

Kevin Samson Activist Post New York City has become the epicenter of a massive apparatus of citizen surveillance, harassment, and control. It’s a place rife with biometrics, a city-wide camera system supplying real-time data to law enforcement, and a militarized physical presence that has turned the city into an armed encampment. New York, in fact, is the testing ground for the implementation of military-level counterterrorism operations on American soil. According to a 60 Minutes interview with Commissioner Ray Kelly , he commands a force larger than the FBI, consisting of 35,000 uniformed officers and 15,000 civilian employees.  New York’s surveillance city  – aka Ring of Steel – has no rival in the realm of Big Brother worship. But so far this is mostly confined to the center. However, in outlying districts, the surveillance society is yet to be imposed full force. The NYPD is now asking for businesses to cooperate in helping to make that happen. Citing a rise in violent crime in the 32nd Precint, Harlem, Commander Rodney Harrison is proposing a cooperation with local businesses dubbed “Grid Search.”  The (disarmed) residents seem to be all for it: Many nearby residents said it was a splendid idea.  “You’ve got a lot of these gang members out here attacking people for no reason,” said one neighbor, Dwayne. “They need to just put a lot of cameras up in storefronts to lower the crime rate.”  However, the (also disarmed) business owners aren’t embracing the idea as enthusiastically: But some business […]

DA Trumpets Upgraded Security At Western Psych

TribLIVE By Margaret Harding Published: Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, 12:01 a.m. Updated 17 hours ago Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. touted the security improvements made at Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic following a tour of the Oakland facility on Friday morning. “It’s outstanding,” Zappala said while standing outside the new main entrance on De Soto Street. “It’s really state of the art.” The redesigned lobby will open next week, UPMC spokeswoman Gloria Kreps said. Many of the upgrades are ones Zappala sought in the aftermath of a fatal shooting in the clinic on March 8, 2012. Former graduate student John Shick, 30, opened fire in the building, killing a worker and wounding five others before University of Pittsburgh police fatally shot him. Zappala’s office hired consulting firms J.P. Hudson & Associates and Condortech Services to review safety procedures in response to the incident. A Condortech report released in November 2012 recommended UPMC spend $2.1 million on security upgrades at Western Psych. Some of the improvements include: relocating and upgrading the main security command and operations center, installing all-in-one security card and fingerprint readers for staff and installing a new video surveillance system, among others. “The doors on the first floor lock down, so your movement is restricted,” Zappala said. “Shick could move through the entire first floor. They’ve stopped that.” Kreps said the security enhancements include: an armed officer always on duty, a walk-through magnetometer in the lobby all visitors must pass through upon entering the building, […]
