NEA Looking To Drones In War On Mosquitoes… And Other Nuisances

Neo Chai Chin Today Online 14 Sep 13; SINGAPORE — A monitoring system to detect noisy vehicles on the roads and unmanned aerial vehicles to inspect high spaces like roof gutters for mosquito-breeding spots. These are two of the solutions being explored by the National Environment Agency (NEA), as part of efforts to better detect and tackle a myriad of bugbears, ranging from illegal hawkers to mysterious ambient odours. A Noisy Vehicle Monitoring System, for instance, is being piloted at an undisclosed location. It aims to use directional microphones installed on road lanes and video technology to capture the licence plate numbers of vehicles that make excessive noise. The pilot will go on for at least another year, given the extensive tests needed to get a shipshape system in place, said NEA Deputy Chief Executive (Technology and Corporate Development) Joseph Hui Kim Sung. Outlining new detection capabilities being developed by the agency yesterday at the World Engineers Summit, Mr Hui said it is now operating in a more challenging environment. The Republic is getting more compact and urbanised and feeling the impact of climate change, and the NEA has to deal with extreme events and crises like mass food poisoning, oil spills, the haze and nuclear incidents happening in Singapore and other countries. At the same time, the authorities are facing the need for greater transparency, accountability and public consultation, said Mr Hui, who was giving a presentation on integrated environmental management systems. Speaking to TODAY, Mr Hui cautioned […]

FTC settles with Trendnet after 'hundreds' of home security cameras were

Home security camera maker Trendnet has reached a settlement with the FTC over charges that it failed to protect customer privacy after a massive security vulnerability was discovered and exploited last year. The breach allowed hackers to  watch and monitor total strangers by tapping into live video feeds from thousands of the company’s internet-connected cameras. After a blog published a step-by-step walkthrough revealing how to remotely access the cameras, a huge list of working video feeds made its way onto Pastebin, where it saw over 87,000 hits. The FTC is none too pleased with the gaping security hole, nor the fact that Trendnet "exposed the private lives of hundreds of consumers to public viewing on the Internet." Hundreds of cameras were compromised In its complaint, the commission says Trendnet "failed to use reasonable security to design and test its software," also alleging that the company, as far back as 2010, "transmitted user login credentials in clear, readable text over the internet." The resulting settlement requires Trendnet to keep a close eye on its privacy policies; moving forward, it is barred from "misrepresenting the security of its cameras or the security, privacy, confidentiality, or integrity of the information that its cameras or other devices transmit." But the camera marketer must also take steps to prevent this catastrophe from repeating itself. Trendnet will need to establish a "comprehensive information security program" designed to spot and resolve potential intrusion risks before they can be exploited. And it will do so under a watchful […]

She opened the door and there stood one of the two women caught on security cameras stealing a wagon from her front yard early morning Tuesday – the wagon that was Alex’s favorite. She apologized profusely for the theft. She said she was sorry. She said she wasn’t thinking. And although she did not know where Alex’s wagon was, she bought him a new one. It was still in the box. “I’m moved to tears,’’ Bean said. “All is right.” Bean said the woman, who she did not want to identify, could not have been more remorseful or apologetic. Click   here for more info. NHA buildings are located in nearly every neighbourhood in the city of Newark, comprising over 8,700 units, and providing housing for over 20,000 residents. Many NHA developments were rife with drugs and gangs, mothers and children were prevented from moving freely throughout their neighbourhoods, and seniors needed more protection. In 2006, the Newark Housing Authority was labouring under the threat of a Federal takeover and hired a new Executive Director, Keith Kinard who completely revamped the organisation. Budget cuts meant staff cuts and replacing the in-house NHA security guard unit with a private security service. Business Challenges The NHA realised it needed to upgrade the physical security systems to provide more effective assistance to Housing Authority security staff. The NHA’s initial security strategy was to lock down all the buildings housing elderly residents with improved access control and a 24/7 guard presence. Prior to installing state-of-the-art surveillance technology from DVTEL , Newark Housing maintained low-tech, black and white cameras that were unmonitored. If an incident happened, the video could aid in an incident investigation, but it was not an ideal means […]

Jon Lewis Alexander, clerk and veteran, thwarts liquor store robbery with own gun | wusa9.com MARIONVILLE, MO (SPRINGFIELD NEWS LEADER) — The guy with a gun picked the wrong clerk. How wrong? A veteran of four tours in Iraq. A 30-year military man. A former prison guard, private investigator, professional extraditor of federal prisoners and – perhaps most important on this particular Sunday night – a proud owner of a Walther PPX 9 mm handgun. The man’s mouth, to be exact, as the robber haplessly holds his own weapon at his side. “One of the policemen told me later, ‘You’re a lucky man,’ ” Alexander said Monday. “I said, ‘I think he (the robber) is a little luckier than I am.’ ” The store’s owners, Max and Jeannine Dawson, shared an 11-second video from the store security camera with Marionville police, friends and the News-Leader on Monday, and Alexander explained what happened. No one was hurt and no shots were fired. The man came in the store smoking a cigarette, and […]

Crime on camera prompts surge in home security inquiries

Home > News > Local News Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) — Police said home surveillance video that went viral on the Internet shows a 23-year-old man stealing from a stranger’s home.   That burglary suspect, Austin Jones, is set to face a judge on Thursday. But as he sits behind bars, the video that thousands have viewed online has prompted many people in Las Vegas to consider getting a home security system.  Several security companies in Las Vegas reported seeing a surge in inquiries from homeowners after the story of the suspect’s arrest made news over the weekend. That includes American Video and Security, Ltd., where the general manager saw the video.  “It was painful,” said Nicola Oakie of what it was like watching the video.   She said she wished the homeowner, Ed Vidal, had more than just a video camera in his home to catch the suspected burglar. She said if he had an alarm system that notified authorities during the burglary, law enforcement could have responded quicker.   Still, she understands that not everyone can afford the most extensive home surveillance system. She points out that having something like a video camera is better than nothing.  She and other security companies said whenever a story like this makes news, they see an uptick in business. They weren’t surprised by the public’s response.   As of Tuesday, more than 30,000 people had viewed the video Vidal had posted of the crime on his Facebook page. Metro said […]
