The Security Industry Association (SIA) has identified and announced the 2019 Security Megatrends – the foundation of SIA’s signature yearly report defining the major trends and forces at play in the global security industry. Forecasting of 2019’s top 10 Security Megatrends was based on survey data generated in September and October 2018 from top security industry business leaders, association leadership and key volunteers and speakers for the next Securing New Ground (SNG) —the security industry’s executive conference— taking place Oct. 25-26 in New York City.
Former Security Industry Association Board Member Recognized With High Honor For Service And Leadership In The Industry
The Security Industry Association (SIA) has selected Pat Comunale, a longtime contributor to the security industry and former president of global security solutions at Anixter, as the 2018 recipient of the George R. Lippert Memorial Award, an honor presented annually to a distinguished individual for long-term, selfless service to the security industry and to SIA. The award will be presented to Comunale during SIA Honors Night on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in New York City. Comunale —a retired security industry veteran and former member of the SIA Board of Directors— is the former CEO and president for Tri-Ed Distribution, an Anixter company.

SIA Commends Department Of Commerce And Department Of Homeland Security On Botnet Report
U.S. Departments of Commerce and Homeland Security released an action-oriented report on how the private sector and government can collaborate to mitigate against the threat of botnets and automated distributed attacks. Report follows Executive Order on Strengthening the Cybersecurity of Federal Networks and Critical Infrastructure. The Security Industry Association (SIA) commends the extensive efforts of these two departments to develop this report, and SIA supports the primary goals described within the report, titled Report to the Present on Enhancing the Resilience of the Internet and Communications Ecosystem Against Botnets and Other Automated, Distributed Threats.
Security Industry Association Applauds Signing Of Maryland Alarm Bills
The Security Industry Association (SIA) commends the signing of companion bills impacting alarm systems companies in Maryland – House Bills (HB) 645 and 1117 and their corresponding companion Senate Bills (SB) 662 and 927. SIA Favors Tax Reform Law For Security And Fire Protection Systems
The Security Industry Association (SIA) led a coalition of industry groups urging negotiators to accept a Senate-backed provision for tax reform to expand deductions under Section 179 of the IRS tax code, which empowers businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment and/or software purchased or financed during the tax year. The revised tax code permanently expands eligibility for deductions to fire protection, alarm, and security systems, along with other equipment, placed in service in 2018 and beyond.

“Security is always too much until the day that it is not enough.” This quote, coined by former FBI director William H. Webster, perfectly summarizes the physical security industry. The irony of this fact is that a well-functioning security solution is transparent to the end-user. It is only if the security system fails that it comes to the attention of management. For this reason, both developers and condominium boards have shown some reluctance to invest in high-end security methods. There are many good reasons for this hesitation. Previously any security system over and above a camera system (referred to as a video surveillance system or VSS) has been seen as an upgrade due to the cost of the equipment and of running cables. Recent advances in the equipment have made VSS, and other technologies, much more useful and affordable to condominiums.

SIA Establishes SecurityPAC To Bolster Advocacy Efforts
SIA formed SecurityPAC to bolster its advocacy efforts to fully engage within U.S. political process on matters affecting the security industry. The PAC will raise funds solely from SIA members to support candidates for federal office who champion issues important to the industry. And SecurityPAC will support matters pertaining but not limited to issues such as homeland security, cybersecurity, federal procurement and critical infrastructure protection.
Security Industry Association And University Of Phoenix Announce Inaugural SIA Scholarship Recipients
The Security Industry Association (SIA), the nonprofit association representing global security companies, and University of Phoenix have awarded full-tuition scholarships to 11 full-time employees from SIA member companies. Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree program at University of Phoenix. To be considered for the University of Phoenix SIA Scholarship, applicants wrote three essays and provided a letter of recommendation. High importance was placed on the applicants’ desire to advance in their education, with an emphasis on furthering their careers, and their impact in the security industry in which they reside.
SIA Recommends School Safety Guidelines, Endorses Proposed Federal Funding For School Security Grant
In the wake of a tragic shooting in San Bernardino, California, on Monday, the Security Industry Association (SIA) pressed for wide adoption of school security guidelines developed by the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS), which prescribe a tiered approach for schools based on available resources. SIA also announced its support of proposed funding measures on Capitol Hill that would authorize matching grants for school security measures.
