NIST Guide Aims To Ease Access Control

Advice on how to encourage information sharing while preserving control over access to data is provided in a new special publication from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. NIST Special Publication 800-162 is titled Guide to Attribute-Based Access Control Definition and Consideration . Attribute-based access control, or ABAC, is a logical access control methodology where authorization to perform a set of operations is determined by evaluating attributes associated with the subject, such as a user or employee; an object, such as specific computerized resource; and requested operations. The flexibility of the ABAC model allows the greatest breadth of subjects to access the greatest breadth of objects without specifying individual relationships between each subject and each object, according to the NIST guidance. "Access decisions can change between requests by simply changing attribute values, without the need to change the subject/object relationships defining underlying rule sets," says NIST Computer Scientist Vincent Hu, who co-wrote the guidance. "This provides a more dynamic access control management capability and limits long-term maintenance requirements of object protections." Example on How ABAC Works NIST offers the following scenario to describe the workings of ABAC: Nancy Smith, a nurse practitioner in a hospital’s cardiology department, is the subject, and when hired at the medical center, she is assigned a set of attributes: her name, title and department, for instance. She’s assigned access to an object, in this case, medical records of heart patients. Resources may receive their attributes either directly from their creator or as a […]

Carlyle To Buy Tyco South Korea Security Unit For $1.93 Billion

March 3 (Bloomberg) — Carlyle Group LP agreed to buy Tyco International Ltd.’s fire and security business in South Korea for $1.93 billion, the country’s largest private-equity buyout deal in U.S. dollar value in more than five years. Tyco is selling Tyco Fire & Security Services Korea Co. and units that form the ADT Korea security business, the company said today. Switzerland-based Tyco said net cash proceeds are expected to be $1.85 billion, and the board added $1.75 billion to its stock buyback authority, for a total of $2 billion. “ADT Korea is a highly stable and profitable business with attractive market positioning, strong brand power and excellent cash flow profile,” Sanghyun Lee, managing director on the Asia buyout team for Washington-based Carlyle, said in a statement. Lee said South Korea’s security industry is “under- penetrated.” Carlyle’s purchase follows investments of more than $920 million of equity in 17 transactions in South Korea as of Dec. 31, 2013 and is also the largest private-equity buyout in the country since 2008, according to the company. The firm’s current and former investments in Korea include KorAm Bank, Hyundai HCN, EO Technics, Tapex and Yakjin Trading. Equity for the transaction will come from Carlyle Asia Partners IV and Carlyle Partners VI, Carlyle said. Carlyle Group has committed debt financing from Korea Exchange Bank, Kookmin Bank, Industrial Bank of Korea, Korea Investment & Securities and UBS AG. Stock Reaction Carlyle fell 2.2 percent to $35.47 at 11:38 a.m. in New York as major […]

Interview With Alexey Khitrov, President, Speechpro

Peter O’Neill, President, findBIOMETRICS (fB): Can you please give us a little bit of background on the company? Alexey Khitrov, President, Speechpro (SP):  Speechpro is the North American subsidiary of the Speech Technology Center . The company was founded in 1990 and has been around for over 20 years. Two key factors separate us from other companies. One is our emphasis on R&D. We do have probably one of the biggest R&D capabilities in voice biometrics with about 150 people in R&D alone (total staff is 400) including 30 PhD’s on board. The other thing is the breadth of the offering and the breadth of the technological expertise that we can bring to the customers. We have products in everything audio from multichannel recordings, speech analytics, signal processing, both text-dependent, text -independent voice verification (1:1) and voice identification (1:N). So the focus on R&D and the breadth of our offering are the two things that separate us from the rest. We have a long history in law enforcement segment of voice biometric market (including some of the world’s largest deployments) and recently introduced our solutions to the Enterprise customers. fB: Can you tell us a little bit about one of your latest product releases, the VoiceKey.OnePass? SP: Absolutely. So VoiceKey.OnePass is an innovative idea that brings together different biometric modalities into a single verification process. The idea here is to make verification in the mobile environment or online as easy as possible while increasing the security. So what we […]

TNT Express operates air and road transportation networks in Europe, China, South America, the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. To more efficiently manage shipping operations in the Asia-Pacific area, TNT Express Worldwide (HK) Ltd. in Hong Kong opened a new 70,000-square-foot hub facility. TNT Express also favored using fewer cameras for greater system efficiency, and had the need to include remote monitoring / camera setting management capabilities. The project ADT Security designed an IP-based networked surveillance system and performed the installation for TNT Express as part of new construction. According to Tyn van Amelsfoort, regional security support manager at TNT Express Worldwide (HK) Ltd., TNT Express had evaluated several megapixel cameras related to another project with ADT Security, enabling a quick decision to go with Arecont Vision for the new facility.  Willie Hong, Senior Sales Engineer of ADT Hong Kong Limited, said TNT Express chose Arecont Vision megapixel IP cameras for their outstanding resolution and as a means to “future-proof” the system for future expansion. KKR, Bain Among Bidders For Tyco?s South Korean Unit

KKR & Co LP and Bain Capital are among suitors which have placed initial bids for Tyco International Inc’s South Korean security systems unit, a business valued at about $1.6bn, people familiar with the matter said. Billion-dollar buyouts are rare in Asia, but security companies, when they come up for sale, tend to attract much interest from private equity firms as they are valued for their stable revenues. According to Reuters , a sale of ADT Caps, would follow Bain’s $3.4bn purchase of European security firm Securitas Direct in 2011 and Blackstone Group’s acquisition of US firm Vivint Inc for more than $2bn last year. Other bidders for ADT Caps include CVC Capital Partners CVC.UL as well as Hong Kong-based Affinity Equity Partners and South Korea’s MBK Partners, the sources said, declining to be identified as the process is confidential. KKR, Bain, CVC and MBK declined to comment. Tyco and Affinity did not respond to emails seeking comment. Morgan Stanley is advising Tyco on the sale, the sources said. Morgan Stanley declined to comment. Tyco, a provider of commercial fire and security systems, became a much smaller company after the diversified conglomerate Tyco International split up last year. Its North American home security arm, ADT, became a separate company and its former flow control unit merged with Pentair Limited. ADT Caps had earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization of $160m as of the end of September 2013. The business is expected to fetch around $1.6bn, based on a ten […]
