Sentry360 Launches Open-Platform NVR Edge Devices For Plug-And-Play IP Video Surveillance
Lakeport Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a man they say is responsible for a string of downtown burglaries committed last week. Jeffery William Stokes, 25, is sought in connection with break-ins at several Lakeport businesses. A second suspect, Kimberly Jo Harvey, 46, already is in custody. “It’s definitely a substantial case,” Lt. Jason Ferguson said Friday. Multiple items were stolen from each place, he said, declining to estimate the value of the items stolen. Harvey was arrested Jan. 9 on suspicion of burglary and possessing stolen property and burglary tools after police found her at a motel room that the hotel manager connected with a man matching Stokes’ description, police said. That man had been stealing coins from the motel’s laundry room, the manager told police. Video surveillance showed a man registering for a room under the name Stokes. The man’s appearance matched that of a man seen on video, along with a woman, on burglarizing a local dry cleaning business two days earlier, police said. An officer went to the room registered to Stokes. He was not there but police said the officer got verbal permission from a woman there, later identified as Harvey, to enter the motel room. The officer saw multiple items he believed to be stolen, including jewelry and blank checks. There also were bolt cutters and other devices considered to be burglary tools, police said. The Lake County District Attorney on Monday filed a complaint accusing Stokes, believed to be […]

Bosch Appoints New Regional Sales Manager
I’m just kinda letting some stuff out. My classes start next week, PTSD and homelessness be damned. If you’re dealing with college, dealing with PTSD, it’s fucking hard. It’s also easy to give up. You look into the future, and there’s nothing there because you just failed all of your classes and got booted out of school. That shit about being a Veteran and being automatically able to handle a simple thing like college– you’ve been through a war, you can handle this– that doesn’t work when PTSD gets involved. You struggle, you fail, and suddenly you’re not coming back next semester. Shit. Now what? No one tells you what to do, just that you can apply for readmission next year. Then the last of the financial aid gets spent, and you’re really screwed. Your landlord makes your life hell trying you evict you at the same time as you’re waking up at 0430 to the sound of machinery moving around, backup beepers that would wake the dead, sand and dust in the air that make outside look and sound and smell a lot like the Desert. You’re in therapy at the VA hospital. You’re in crisis mode. Life sucks. You scrape up enough money to get most of the rent paid, but you can’t find a place to live because you won’t get a good reference from the landlord that runs the place you’re living in. The VA is trying to help but you’re still going to end […]

Activists Now Want Houston PD To Install More Dashcams
HOUSTON – Some activist wants more Houston Police Department vehicles to have dashcams. Right now, according to a Houston Chronicle report, only five percent of HPD cars have dashcams. The Dallas Police Department has dashcams in 55 percent of its fleet. Some activists believe more cameras could keep more people safe. That’s why community leaders took to Houston City Hall Tuesday afternoon. But Ray Hunt with the Houston Police Officers Union says the lack of dashcams doesn’t hinder officers from doing their jobs. “Last night there was a shooting that was nowhere near the car, a dashcam would have done nothing at all to capture any information there,” he said. He went on to say that in most questionable cases, video is available from other sources. In the case of Chad Holley, the robbery suspect who was beaten by HPD officers, the video was not from a dashcam, but from nearby security cameras. Recently, the department announced that 100 officers were equipped with body cameras and more could come. Face Detection And Recognition By Airlive IVS
15-01-2014 Airlive, one of the most advanced international IP Surveillance Networking products and solutions provider, has just introduced its latest new cameras with an IVS face detection and recognition functionality – the MD-3025-IVS and the BU-3026-IVS, and announced its participation at Intersec Dubai 2014. Intelligent video surveillance (IVS) face detection and recognition is designed to provide advanced, accurate video analytics that can be used to search, track, classify, and identify faces of people within the monitored area. This IVS function automatically detects and captures a person’s face and compares it to an image recorded in a specific database. It can alert the operator when a face is detected in the frame of the image. This new function provides an additional security shield at the entrance to a buiding to prevent unauthorised entry, to protect residents, and also allows for the creation of a database of, employees and other people for example. A camera with this IVS function, if located at the entrance to a building, can maintain a record of all those who pass through the area and save their faces into a database. If a face is detected that is not stored to the database – then the appropriate information will be displayed. These IVS-featured IP cameras provide many benefits in application. For example, a traditional access control system allows for the entry of an unauthorised person with an authorised card, whilst on the other hand an IVS authentication system compares the card holder and his face with the image already stored in the database. For example, a passenger crossing through border control could have his face from the live video compared with […]

Top 5 Tape Takeaways for
Most IT professionals, at least those over thirty, were probably introduced to tape as part of the backup system. For years tape drives and libraries have been the primary repositories for backup data, most recently with the LTO (Linear Tape Open) format. In the past decade, however, disk-based backup has largely replaced the use of tape. But in some industries and use cases tape has been doing just fine, first as a long-term archive medium and then as a way to transport and share large file data. In 2014 tape is poised to re-emerge in more mainstream IT environments and non-backup use cases, thanks to the explosion of unstructured data and the proliferation of the cloud. For IT professionals, there are five takeaways from 2014 that help explain how tape has pulled off this comeback. # 1 – Tape is not dead While its role in backup has diminished, tape for archive is growing. For the last several years tape has been ‘living large’ in the Media and Entertainment (M&E) space – these are the broadcast companies that have enormous archives of digital content and the companies that make software and all the technology to create that content from raw video files. Even before the cloud companies M&E was dealing with petabyte scale data sets and tape was their go-to technology. Tape also provided a way to easily move large files around in an organization and to share files across platforms and between companies. With its ability to hold […]

Dozens Of Cameras Add To Security In Government Building
Dozens of cameras add to security in government building Dozens of cameras add to security in government building Somebody’s eyes are watching you daily, with 70-plus cameras in the Butler County Government Services Building. Most expect to be watched when entering the court wing on the second floor and walking through the metal detector, but cameras are pointed at all public areas on all floors, according to county officials. Nestled in an undisclosed location is security personnel watching over banks of monitors. “It is to keep people safe,” said Chief Deputy Anthony Dwyer of the sheriff’s office. “We have a lot of foot traffic throughout the building from people in emotionally charged situations.” The original system, installed in the building in 1999, recently received an upgrade. Dwyer said the clarity of the camera’s images has improved as well as the positioning of cameras and monitors. Elected office holders can also opt to install a camera system in non-public areas. Auditor Roger Reynolds, Recorder Danny Crank, Coroner Dr. Lisa Mannix and Prosecutor Michael Gmoser and County Administrator Charles Young said no additional cameras are installed in their offices, but all said they have additional security measures. In the treasurer’s office where plenty of money is received, seven cameras are operational, according to Treasurer Nancy Nix. “It does come in handy,” Nix said, noting an innocent mistake between an employee and a taxpayer using cash to pay taxes was recently discovered by reviewing security camera tapes. “We could tell which taxpayer […]

Illinois? Eavesdropping Law Under Attack
Continuous Video Recording in Progress Continuous Video Recording in Progress I’ve been following the Chris Drew travesty fairly closely. Why should police be treated differently than other citizens? If Illinois law was on the books in California, for instance, would Scott Olsen be a household name? Or other Occupy incidents, like the various pepper spraying videos? If police are doing their job, they shouldn’t be worried about a spectator videoing their actions, and if they are doing something questionable, citizens should be able to collect evidence of police wrongdoing. Anyway, there are rumblings that the law could be thrown out as vague, or unconstitutional. When a Cook County jury in August acquitted a woman of violating Illinois’ strict eavesdropping law, an unassuming man with wire-rimmed glasses and wispy white hair sat in the gallery, quietly taking notes. Chris Drew had good reason to keep an eye on the case — he’s facing trial on the same felony charge of eavesdropping on a public official, which carries up to 15 years in prison. An artist whose ’60s upbringing instilled a deep respect for questioning authority, Drew, 61, is accused of making an illegal audio recording of Chicago police during a 2009 arrest for selling art on a downtown street without a permit. Drew intended the incident to be a test of the city’s permit laws. But now his case has wound up at the forefront of a much bigger effort to challenge the constitutionality of Illinois’ eavesdropping law, which makes […]

Fayetteville NC Police Urge Businesses To Use Video Surveillance
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – As a way to catch criminals and deter crime, the Fayetteville Police Department is working to improve surveillance cameras at businesses. Kari Ellis, the department’s specialist in video, is spreading the word about an initiative called "Video Done Right." On Thursday she presented information about the initiative to a group of business owners and managers who were interested in installing or improving surveillance systems. Ellis started the program to give businesses the "dos and don’ts" of setting up surveillance systems. It covers what cameras to use, where to place them and the settings that capture the best pictures. Ellis, or other crime prevention specialists with the same training, will even examine the current setup at a business and provide feedback. Ellis said she was inspired to start the program because she often needed to examine video at a place where a crime had occurred, but many times the video was poor quality because for any number of reasons. She said poor video isn’t very helpful, but good video makes a big difference for police. "When you put that evidence in front of a jury, what can they say? That’s you. A lot of times their mother will identify them. Their friends will rat them out. So yeah, video is really integral in solving crime," Ellis said. Ellis said the Shaniya Davis kidnapping and murder case is a prime example of how good surveillance is helpful. She wishes every business would have a system as good as […]

The Resolution Revolution
jan14-feature2 Timothy Compston takes a closer look at the impact that HD and megapixel video surveillance cameras are having in the fast expanding IP environment. Fit-for-purpose? Discussing the take-up of megapixel cameras, Joel White, senior product manager at American Dynamics – part of Tyco Security Products – reveals that currently the bulk of installed cameras are in the 2 megapixel range. White stresses that even with the prospect of enhanced resolution coming on stream, in the guise of 8 megapixel cameras, everything still has to lead back to a solution’s ultimate goal: "When you think about it video surveillance solutions are really targeting a specific purpose, every camera in that system is delivering video to meet that goal and resolution is only one part of that equation." Ultimately, White believes, that it comes down to the actual ‘use case’: "What is my deployment situation? What do I need to extract out of the video?" White goes on to say that across the security industry, sadly, there still remains an obsession with ‘big numbers’ and ‘nice specs’: "This provides more business and people kind of get glazed over and think that bigger is better, which is not always the case. For everything there is a trade-off." He warns, for instance, that although there are many high resolution cameras out there offering 3, 5 or even higher megapixels very few, in his experience, come with high quality lenses rated above 3 megapixels. With larger camera resolutions White also flags up the […]
Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Camera Found In Bathroom
An American Airlines 767. (Credit: American Airlines) If you were going to affix a tiny camera in an airplane bathroom, wouldn’t you remember to take it down again? Before, you know, someone found it. It seems, though, that an unknown person — for an unknown reason — taped a camera inside an airplane bathroom on Sunday and left it there. When it was discovered, the American Airlines 767 plane, which was en route from San Francisco to New York, was diverted to Kansas City, as no one at the time could identify the device. It was feared to be a bomb. As NBC News reports , it looked like a flash drive. But government officials now say it was a camera masquerading as a flash drive. That might lead some to speculation fueled by imagination. Some will utter words such as "mile," "high" and "club"; although, "high" might be sufficient. Of course, the camera might have been there before the plane had taken off and no one had noticed it. Cameras disguised as flash drives are freely available, some costing as little as $50. Some models claim to record high-definition video. On the Brickhouse Security Web site , for example, one potential benefit is described as: "Use it as a handheld mini-camera or leave it plugged into your computer while set to motion activation to catch what’s going on while you’re away." Clearly, though, if the stick was attached to a surface in the bathroom, it was likely put […]
