NEC Corporation announced that NEC Technologies India has partnered with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing to deploy its industry-leading automated fingerprint identification system for the Kerala State Police in India. The new AFIS will be used by the Kerala State Police to match unknown fingerprints against a central database of known fingerprints for criminal investigation. There are more than 600 police/enforcement facilities across the state.
NIST Recommends ONVIF Video Export Spec as New Standard for FBI
ONVIF® announced that its Export File Format, the ONVIF specification for the export of video from security surveillance recording platforms, is the new standard recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the exporting and playback of video surveillance recordings. In a research project commissioned by the FBI to aid law enforcement in forensic investigations, NIST worked in conjunction with ONVIF to adopt the Export File Format to serve as the FBI?s new minimum interoperability requirements.

In a landmark ruling, the Illinois Supreme Court today held that consumers can sue for violations of their privacy under the state?s biometric privacy law, even if no actual harm could be shown.
The case, Rosenbach v. Six Flags Entertainment Corp., concerned a 14-year-old boy who was asked to scan his thumb into a biometric data capture system before receiving a season pass to a Six Flags amusement park. The boy and his mother claimed they were not informed of the purpose and length of term for which his fingerprint had been collected and neither of them had signed a release for the taking of the biometric information, in violation of the state’s Biometric Privacy Information Act.
