Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Camera Found In Bathroom

An American Airlines 767. (Credit: American Airlines) If you were going to affix a tiny camera in an airplane bathroom, wouldn’t you remember to take it down again? Before, you know, someone found it. It seems, though, that an unknown person — for an unknown reason — taped a camera inside an airplane bathroom on Sunday and left it there. When it was discovered, the American Airlines 767 plane, which was en route from San Francisco to New York, was diverted to Kansas City, as no one at the time could identify the device. It was feared to be a bomb. As NBC News reports , it looked like a flash drive. But government officials now say it was a camera masquerading as a flash drive. That might lead some to speculation fueled by imagination. Some will utter words such as "mile," "high" and "club"; although, "high" might be sufficient. Of course, the camera might have been there before the plane had taken off and no one had noticed it. Cameras disguised as flash drives are freely available, some costing as little as $50. Some models claim to record high-definition video. On the Brickhouse Security Web site , for example, one potential benefit is described as: "Use it as a handheld mini-camera or leave it plugged into your computer while set to motion activation to catch what’s going on while you’re away." Clearly, though, if the stick was attached to a surface in the bathroom, it was likely put […]

Utah Schools Run Lockdown Drills, A Year After Sandy Hook

Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., one year ago, local school districts have been making changes and improvements to ensure student safety.   Soon after the shooting, the Ogden School District, Weber School District and Davis School District started to examine safety procedures. Each district changed and fine-tuned procedures.   "It’s natural to reflect on our own security and what can be done," Weber School District spokesman Nate Taggart said. Officials in the Davis and Weber districts said they looked at better ways to work with the several police departments in their districts. District officials sat down with officers from each police jurisdiction to come up with some standard protocols.  "When you are dealing with children that can’t defend themselves in chaos, consistency is key to preserving the safety of our kids," said Kaysville Police Chief Sol Oberg.  Leaders in the Weber and Ogden school districts also looked to parents for help and input.  The Davis School District recently held a mock disaster drill, and Ogden School District safety administrator Zac Williams said a mock disaster drill is possibly on the horizon for his district.    Davis School District Fairfield Junior High School in Kaysville came to a standstill Wednesday afternoon after an announcement came over the intercom that the school was in the midst of a lockdown. (It was, of course, only a drill.)  Several minutes passed before 11 police officers from Kaysville, Layton and Syracuse, along with three K-9 dogs, began checking locked […]

Review: Dropcam Video Monitoring Camera

If you want to set up a home monitoring camera but don’t want to run wiring or waste time configuring a system, there’s a product now available to Canadians that makes video surveillance simple. Dropcam is a small, cellphone-sized video monitoring camera that can rest on its stand or be mounted to a wall. It draws power from a USB cable plugged into a wall outlet and transmits video wirelessly to the cloud over a WiFi Internet connection. I tried out Dropcam Pro, while a simpler Dropcam model also exists. Optically, the Pro’s camera captures surprisingly sharp images for something just designed to keep tabs on your home, kids or outdoor scenery. This is largely thanks to the six-element glass lens system (compared to plastic lenses) with a 130-degree field of view to capture 720p HD video. Dropcam also says the image sensor is twice as large as the one found in the company’s previous Dropcam HD camera, which helps in low-light conditions. There are eight infrared LEDs to improve night vision surveillance. Now, here’s how Dropcam is smart. Video is uploaded using what they say is bank-level encryption to the cloud. From any device with a web connection (or the iPhone/Android apps) you can log in to see the live video, and use the camera’s microphone and speaker to have a remote conversation. Dropcam also detects when there’s motion or an unusual sound, sending you a push notification on your iPhone or an email to alert you that […]

Israeli Education Ministry To Limit Use Of Security Cameras In Schools

Security camera Cameras will no longer be installed in kindergartens, and in schools they will be allowed in corridors and the schoolyard, but not in gyms or in classrooms. These are some of the new regulations to be issued by the Education Ministry. A ministry document also states that cameras cannot be used to replace on-duty teachers during recess. Moreover, in contrast to the current situation, local authorities will not be able to decide to install cameras in schools in their jurisdiction. Rather, the decision will be up to the principal and the teachers. The new regulations come after years in which more and more security cameras have been installed in hundreds of schools in dozens of cities and towns. The document, outlining the new rules, to be issued by the ministry director general, has not yet been published and is now being scrutinized by the Justice Ministry. However, the head of the Education Ministry’s Psychological Counseling Service, Hannah Shadmi, on Tuesday made the details public at a conference on child and family rights at Sha’arei Mishpat College in Hod Hasharon. Before the Education Ministry will allow a camera to be installed, the new directives will require the principal to explain to the ministry why it is necessary and what other steps he or she has taken to prevent violence in the school. Principals will be limited to using the cameras to prevent violence and not to follow students who are skipping classes. The new regulations also say when […]

http://www.bunkerseguridad.es/en/02_industrial_towers.html Source: Avigilon | Date: 12/04/2013 Related tags: Avigilon , NVR , surveillance cameras Profile Known for their signature Orange Crushes and expansive seafood menu, Mama’s on the Half Shell is the crown jewel of the Canton Square neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland. Many locals venture to the establishment for a variety of occasions, whether it’s watching Baltimore Ravens games, celebrating a birthday or sticking around for late night drinks with friends. Just a few doors down stands two other restaurants in the Mama’s family: Nacho Mamas, a Mexican-themed restaurant, and The Pizza and Wing Factory, which is attached to Nacho Mamas and a popular takeout spot. Despite being open for nearly a decade, prior to deploying Avigilon Mama’s on the Half Shell had not implemented a video surveillance system, leaving the restaurant in a vulnerable state from a security standpoint. The restaurant’s ownership approached Unilux, the Maryland-based video surveillance distributor to help design an HD surveillance system for the three restaurants. The company recommended the Avigilon high-definition surveillance solution because of the unparalleled image quality the system provided, the ease-of-use of the ACC software and the efficient storage solutions. The Avigilon system was soon installed in all three restaurants. Challenge Deploy an elite high-definition video surveillance system that will minimize theft, monitor customer activity and ensure the safety of all patrons and employees for a trio of popular Baltimore-area restaurants. Solution As first-time surveillance system users, the owners of Mama’s on the Half Shell installed 14 Avigilon 1 MP […]

New Thermal Imaging Cameras For U.S. Border Patrol

Illustration photo (123rf) Illustration photo (123rf) The U.S customs and border s (CBP) has awarded a contract worth more than $67,000 to General Dynamics Global Imaging Technologies, Inc. to supply its Z-500 long-range thermal imaging camera s for the U.S. Border Patrol to use at its Calexico Station in California to spot criminal organizations crossing the border in ultra-light aircraft. “ The Calexico Station currently lacks the capability to efficiently monitor the criminal organizations and terrorists engaging in or planning illicit activities along the U.S. border ,” says a CBP award notice posted on November 4. “Current Thermal Cameras are insufficient, outdated, and often fail; land units are unable to exploit the use of new camera technology due to there being none. As a result, Calexico Station requests to modernize and reinforce its current capabilities based on the criminal organizations methods being used to evade Border Patrol enforcement.” According to Government Security News the Z-500 is the only camera thermal imaging system that is compatible with the Remote Video Surveillance System (RVSS), which is also being used at the Calexico Station. iHLS – Israel Homeland Security “ With outstanding long-range target detection and recognition, the Z-500 continuous zoom long-range thermal imager is the camera of choice for force protection and surveillance ,” says General Dynamics on its own Web site. “User-defined preset field-of-view options offer the user unprecedented mission flexibility. The camera is easily integrated into any command and control system and provides easy-to-use push button interaction. With its […]

Davis County Utah Upgrades Security Cameras

FARMINGTON — With high-definition security surveillance cameras, it is going to be much easier for Davis County to tell the good guys from the bad guys. Although county officials assure they will not be using the upgraded surveillance equipment to spy on others, but rather, to protect county properties from acts of vandalism and to prevent fraudulent claims being made against the county. The Davis County Commission this week approved a series of new contracts with Stanley Convergent Security Solutions in making certain county properties are protected with the best camera equipment available when it comes to surveillance. The contracts, marked confidential to avoid disclosing the exact placement of the cameras, totaled $38,000 in labor, installation and equipment, for four locations, County Director of Information Services Mark Langston said. The cameras will be installed at the Legacy Events Center in west Farmington, the County Memorial Courthouse in downtown Farmington, and at the two county-owned and operated golf courses, Davis Park in Kaysville and Valley View in Layton. “It’s not to spy,” Langston said. But the footage taken will serve as police evidence in the event a crime against the county does occur, he said. The Layton course this summer was the site of two acts of vandalism resulting in more than $10,000 in damage to the green of the nationally recognized 18-hole public course. “We’re just upgrading,” Langston said of the county now in the process of replacing its old analog cameras with new digital cameras. “It is like […]

CaughtOnCamera: Tornado Hits Indiana Middle School

Video shows destruction. Cafeteria hit, ceilings collapse into the halls, gymnasium destroyed LAFAYETTE (WTHR NBC13) Security video of a tornado striking a Lafayette middle school has the school district doing its homework on how best to keep kids safe. No decision has been made on demolishing or refurbishing Southwestern Middle School, which was hit by one of dozens of tornadoes to hit Indiana November 17. “This is the first impact and it hits the west wall and then the south wall,” said Principal Karen Smith. The video as the tornado impacted Southwestern Middle School is harrowing. School security cameras captured the scene. “When you see light, that means the west wall is already gone. That is the light from the outside coming in,” said Smokey Anderson, head of emergency management for Tippecanoe County. The tornado hit on a Sunday when there were no students at the school. You can imagine a much worse outcome had kids been in these halls or in the cafeteria. Watch- 13 WTHR Indianapolis

Small-Town Big Brother: Bunnell FL Eying Slew Of Spy Cameras In City?s South Side

FlaglerLive | February 8, 2011 magritte-false-mirror Magritte’s ‘False Mirror’ (1928) Bunnell city commissioners favor installing eight surveillance cameras at various locations in the city’s south and overwhelmingly black side. One camera would be reserved for the area around the First United Methodist Church and Bank of America downtown, where the homeless gather when the cold-weather shelter there is open. Commissioners are looking at surveillance cameras as a crime deterrent in drug-ridden zones, and as a way to expand the reach of the city police department, which is short-staffed: police officers would be able to conduct surveillance and zoom in and out on license plates, people’s faces or activity in streets or possibly through windows from their laptops, their desks or, conceivably—if they have the proper sign-ons—any computer. The cameras would be equipped with 220x zoom capability. “We have the whole south side, the whole infested area, under surveillance with these eight cameras,” Bunnell Police Chief Arthur Jones said. Four of five Bunnell city commission members conceptually approved of video surveillance in a meeting Monday evening. (They didn’t vote: it was a workshop where voting is not allowed.) They didn’t question whether the system should be in place, but how, and to what extent, it should be installed, considering the costs. Commissioner Elbert Tucker ridiculed the notion that drug dealers wouldn’t quickly adapt, and move out of sight of the cameras without leaving the area to do their business, since the cameras don’t by any means blanket the whole south […]

Mindtree East campus is a large facility with over 1200 mindtree “’minds” walking in each day. The management was looking for an effective way to enhance their monitoring with respect to the safety of the entire premises and all visitors and staff. Total of 68 network cameras were deployed across 6 floors with an area of 107,000 sq ft. CONCERNS The implementation has brought a number of benefits. Apart from the cameras, the organization has also deployed its own Mindtree Manage Mind VMS and Video Analytics on standard off-the-shelf servers to address the below challenges: The head of security and senior security officers are constantly on the move and needed quick access to live video and recorded feeds. The head of security is located in a different campus located across the city. Entry to certain areas within the campus such as data centers, finance bay and hardware labs is highly restricted. Security officers need to be alerted as soon as anyone enters these areas. Security officers watching the video feeds from the control room wanted to be able to create incidents and assign them to specific security officers. Ensure that service entrances were not mis-used. For example, vehicle parking at service entrances is restricted to duration of loading/unloading of goods and equipment. Security officers wanted a quick mechanism to assess all security incidents that occurred during the day. Guards frequently moved out of their position especially after office hours and during the weekends. Web browser-based clients enable security officers […]
