Integrators Get A Sales Edge With Edge Storage

YARMOUTH, Maine—Steve Gorski has experienced some déjà vu at recent trade shows. As GM Americas for Mobotix, a network camera company that takes a decentralized approach to storage, Gorski has been evangelizing the benefits of storage onboard the camera for a while. Now, he finds that he’s not alone in talking about the benefits of storage on the edge. While each manufacturer’s approach is different, in the past couple of years several video companies have come out with camera offerings that include edge video storage. “Storage on the edge makes a lot of sense,” Gorski said. “It’s been interesting to watch more and more manufacturers decide to do this. … Off the top of my head I can think of three or four.” All Mobotix cameras come with megapixel storage onboard, which isn’t the case with other manufacturers. And the actual onboard storage is only part of Mobotix’s decentralized approach. “If you need more, we have NAS [network attached storage] options,” he said. One of the reasons other manufacturers have started to offer storage on the edge is because of rapidly increasing capacity. Today, you can store “five days of full frame rate recording of high definition video on a … $40 64-gig SD card,” said Fredrik Nilsson, GM Americas for network video manufacturer Axis Communications. Looking ahead, Nilsson surmised that in 2015, that same $40 SD card will be able to hold 30 days of video, in 2018 it will store three months and ten years from now […]

Hopatcong SC School Security Improvements Underway, Superintendent Says

New video and camera surveillance systems are in place to keep students and staff safe. Hopatcong Borough Schools Administration Building in file photo Hopatcong Borough Schools has undertaken an aggressive review of current operational practices with an eye toward improving building security—and improvements are already underway and ongoing, according to a school district statement. The district’s goal, according to Superintendent of Schools Cynthia Randina, is to ensure greater scrutiny of all visitors, staffers and students entering and exiting Hopatcong school buildings.  Several changes to the district’s security system are in place or in progress: Surveillance cameras are being placed in locations not adequately monitored. An access control system is being installed that automatically opens and locks doors on a schedule. It requires the use of access swipe cards by staff members. When a locked door is opened by an unauthorized person, the system registers as an alarm event on surveillance video. Wireless cameras are being planned to monitor the major athletic fields. All main school entrances will be modified to include real-time camera surveillance with intercoms and electronic buzzer entry systems. Randina said security planning will continue to be modified as needed based on suggestions from trained police officers as well as school security personnel.

RF Technologies Releases Enhancements To Help Alert Wireless Panic Button Solution

BROOKFIELD, Wis. , Oct. 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — RF Technologies ® , a leading provider of RFID and RTLS safety and security solutions, has released version 2.1 of its Help Alert ® Wireless Staff Duress Solution, which provides priority-based alerts, universal device access through HTML5, and a simple desktop application. Help Alert uses discreet mobile panic buttons, or pendants, as a proactive, cost-effective solution to protect staff, patients, teachers, students and guests. When pressed, pendants broadcast a silent alarm that can be configured to alert security teams, first responders, or local police through a computer or mobile device. “The increased need for safety in places like schools, hospitals and hotels means facilities are looking for a simple, yet multi-functional duress solution. Help Alert is as easy to use as it always has been, now with more features that help get a fast response when it’s needed most,” said Bill Bulzoni , vice president of business development, PinPoint. Multi-mode alarms Instead of having a system that only summons onsite support or calls the police, both types of duress calls can be made from one button on the Help Alert pendant with the multi-mode feature. Pressing the button once will generate a normal alarm. If the button is pressed and held, or pressed multiple times within a short period, a priority alarm is generated. “Many facilities regularly experience safety and security challenges that don’t require external police intervention. But, the option has to be available when it’s needed. The multi-mode feature enables […]

Is Street Photography Ethical?

Christina Harman In a day and age where there is a threat of images falling into the wrong hands, the issue of street photography is coming under fire from public opinion. Ironically, in a time where everything we do is being increasingly captured on camera anyways – whether by security cameras or at the ATM, public awareness – and opinions on the issue of street photography are also on the rise, and the debate goes on. Street Photography photography by Ian Carroll However some photographers wonder why there is even a debate on the ethics of street photography. Surely ethics aren’t an issue for photojournalists, or something that other photographers have to face. Why are street photographers being singled out and viewed with suspicion? Photography has always come under scrutiny Whether it’s a photographer photographing people in a culture that is superstitious of the camera, or a photojournalist being criticized for photographing the plight of someone – rather than helping – photography of any kind will always involve an ethical dilemma. Photojournalism in and of itself isn’t unethical; however, snapping photos at the scene of an accident can cause the issue of ethics to come into question. In the same way, street photography in and of itself is not an ethical issue. It’s the problems that arise from some of the tactics that are used, the potential conflicting motives that are involved with some cases of photography (should homeless people be photographed for art?), and the public concerns and […]

AMG Systems Integrated Meyertech ONVIF VMS Solution

Source: AMG Systems | Date: 10/29/2013 Related tags: AMG systems AMG Systems , the British manufacturer of sophisticated Megapixel cameras and CCTV transmission technology, and Meyertech, market leading British supplier of Enterprise Video Management solutions, have announced a technology partnership that will see the AMG-Panogenics 5 megapixel 360 degree PanoCam360 camera range integrated into Meyertech’s FUSION-Core-SolarVMS. David Wood, at Meyertech, says, “Panoramic cameras provide massive advantages over traditional security cameras and are rapidly becoming the new de facto standard in surveillance, demanded by end-users and installers/integrators alike. Since a single panoramic camera can cover an area that would previously have demanded the deployment of several devices, installation is simpler and less costly. A single panoramic camera also makes things much simpler for control room staff and data recording requirements. We chose to use the AMG Systems’ PanoCam360 range due to its very high build quality and specifications, especially its industry-leading 5 megapixel resolution. AMG provided us with all the necessary support every step of the way during the integration and testing process of the cameras and, thanks to their support team, the integration of the PanoCam360 went very smoothly.” Sara Bullock, International Sales & Marketing Director of AMG Group commented, “I welcome this strategic partnership with Meyertech, which pairs the PanoCam360 with Meyertech’s FUSION-Core-Solar video management software. This is a powerful and versatile platform which offers many innovative features. For example, it boasts a fully customisable Graphical User Interface, auto log-off facilities, and a unique system model facility that […]

Security Cameras Roll Out In North Augusta SC

Staff Photo by Scott Rodgers The new security cameras are up at the municipal center. North Augusta will soon have a new tool in its fight on crime. The City has already installed a number of high-tech surveillance cameras at the municipal center. Following the numerous break-ins that occurred throughout the summer, action was taken to put in place some preventive measures. Even John Thomas, the chief at North Augusta Public Safety, had his unmarked Tahoe broken into. “What really spurred the decision was the number of break-ins we experienced in the Greeneway parking lots, where folks would park out in the remote areas and go walk,” Rick Meyer, director of North Augusta Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, said. “Also in front of the activity center and Riverview Park. It comes in cycles – we’ll go six months and not have any; then we’ll have a rash of them. These folks are pretty good; they can break into your car, we’ve timed it on video, in 10 seconds or less.” Meyer noted that although there are some existing cameras in place, they do not have the coverage and capability of the new ones. He also said there are currently zero on the Greeneway, so this will be brand-new along that area. “We have a few when you walk in the door here, but they’re ancient and need to be replaced,” he said. “All of the locations themselves – and this also includes the soon-to-be-built Park and Ride out on […]

If Boston Were Smart

L ast year, the Daily Beast named Boston the country’s smartest metropolitan area. The website was referring to the people of Boston, of course, not the city itself. But what if the city itself were smart? What if technology, designed by the smart people who work in Boston, could help us save time and energy and spare us from daily frustrations? We talked to some BU researchers who are studying, designing, and building the technology for a more enlightened city. Smarter grid Because the cost of electricity fluctuates throughout the day, depending on demand, smart meters that are currently available tell homeowners exactly how much energy they use and at what cost, encouraging them to delay energy-intensive activities until a time of day when demand and costs are low. Supported by a $2 million National Science Foundation grant, Michael Caramanis, a College of Engineering professor of mechanical and systems engineering, John Baillieul, an ENG professor of mechanical engineering, and two MIT faculty members are collaborating on a study of how these and larger-scale measures could result in a smarter electricity grid. In the United States, we lose about 8 percent of energy because it travels long distances between points of generation to use. Caramanis thinks the loss could be greatly reduced if we got our energy from closer and cleaner sources. A smarter grid could help us do that. security cameras Smarter security Security officers could sort through billions of hours of video footage and spot unusual events, such […]

CaughtOnCamera: Would-Be-Burglar Caught On Tape

Home surveillance footage quickly leads to arrest After her Woburn, Massachusetts home was broken into for the second time in five years, Jacqueline Duffy had a security system with a video camera installed. She pointed the camera at the window that had been used on the previous break-in. To her surprise, when she came home on Friday night her security alarm was activated. She went to her monitor, played back the video and watched in horror as a man squeezed himself through the window beside her air conditioning unit. “Watching the footage brought out a flood of different emotions,” Duffy admits. “I was upset that someone would invade our home, relieved that the security system worked and thought it was a bit funny the way he squeezed in. I have no idea who the man is, nor do I want to ‘meet’ him again.” When the system alarm went off, the burglar was startled and ran from the home without taking anything. Duffy then called the police. The Woburn Police took a screenshot of the burglar and ran it through a statewide database. Lynn Police quickly recognized the man as Charles Derochemont, 35, of 1A MacArthur Circle, Peabody, Massachusetts. When questioned, he promptly confessed to climbing through the window citing a variety of “personal issues” as the reason. Duffy uploaded the video to YouTube to show the dangers of using a window mounted air conditioner and the advantages of home security systems. Titled “Busted Burglar” the 59-second clip has […]

Emanuel Touts Savings In Red-Light Camera Contract

BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter October 25, 2013 2:52PM Sun-Times Library storyidforme: 56887440 tmspicid: 18319330 fileheaderid: 8232492 Updated: October 25, 2013 6:41PM Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday turned the page from a $2 million bribery scandal plaguing Chicago’s decade-old red-light camera program in a way, he claims, will save taxpayers $10 million a year. The city signed a five-year contract — with three, two-year extensions — that calls for Xerox State & Local Solutions, Inc. to be paid $1,819 per month to manage and maintain each of the city’s 384 red-light cameras. That’s just 42 percent of the $4,300 monthly fee that Chicago was paying Arizona-based Redflex Traffic Solutions, the company forced out by the bribery scandal. The more favorable terms are expected to save taxpayers $10 million a year over the life of the contract, City Hall said. Mayoral spokesman Bill McCaffrey said the dramatic drop in prices stems from the “different technology” used by the two companies. Redflex had “loop detectors mounted in the street.” Xerox is using less costly radar technology, McCaffrey said. Xerox spokesman Carl Langsenkamp had no immediate comment on the contract finalized Friday. A press release issued by City Hall said the “transition to the new management team” would begin immediately. “Automated red-light enforcement changes drivers’ behavior to reduce the number of crashes and increase the level of safety for everyone,” Transportation Commissioner Gabe Klein was quoted as saying in a statement. “We plan to continue this important program with a new […]

Axis Communications GM: Why IP-Camera Surveillance Matters

Despite its moniker as an old technology, surveillance cameras continue to be deployed by SMBs and enterprises alike to help keep an eye on things. Moreover, the invention of the network camera served to propel surveillance into the digital age, allowing the technology to maintain its relevance in our heavily networked world of today. To gain a better insight in the use of IP cameras today, we approached Fredrik Nilsson, the general manager for Axis Communications in North America for an one-on-one interview with FierceCIO:TechWatch . In his response, Nilsson explains why IP-based digital surveillance is superior over their analog equivalents and argues why businesses should not settle for consumer-centric IP cameras. Nilsson also shared some recommendations for enterprises looking to deploy IP cameras. FCIO : CCTV cameras have been around for a long time. What has changed over the years? CCTV has been around for half a century. At first it was mostly used for deterrence by installing big obtrusive analog cameras. But frankly the last true innovation in analog CCTV was the addition of color video. The first network camera was invented (by Axis Communications) in 1996, and adoption in the security industry began in the early 2000s. Over the last decade the industry has undergone a technology shift from analog to IP video–with 2014 being the first year that IP is expected to overtake analog sales–and the emergence of software and storage players moved us into the forensics phase. But today no one wants a camera. They […]

Canon Launches Series Of HD IP-Cameras

Canon Europe has added four new full HD resolution network security cameras to its product range: the PTZ Minidome VB-S30D, PT Minidome VB-S31D, Fixed Minidome VB-S800D, and Fixed Box VB-S900F.The new ultra-compact S series has been designed for indoor environments that require sensitive monitoring of specific areas or items, such as the retail, education, commercial and hospitality sectors. System integrators can install the four new full HD cameras as part of an existing or new security set-up. With high-sensitivity CMOS sensors, fast wide-angle lenses and dual DIGIC processors, the S series offers a combination of full HD resolution, detailed image quality, wide angle of view and excellent low-light performance. Rather than just depending on one imaging processor to do everything, the new S series features two processors: Digic DV III and Digic Net II – enabling all capturing, processing, encoding and transmitting to be performed seamlessly. The S series offers low-light performance, even in difficult lighting conditions, offering a true day/night operation. While the processing architecture Digic DV III and Digic Net II remains the same between the new series and Canons 2012 network security cameras, the internal programming has been re-engineered to deliver multiple H.264 and/or MJPEG streams in HD or lower resolutions. In addition to multi-streaming, the cameras can also do simultaneous streaming. The full range supports edge recording on microSD cards up to 64GB and features a new utility that can playback directly from the microSD card without the content being downloaded to a PC first. […]
