Atlanta Invests $350,000 In Operation Shield Video Surveillance Program

Mayor Kasim Reed announced that the City of Atlanta has invested more than $350,000 in technology enhancements to the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) platform at the Operation Shield Video Integration Center (VIC), funded through the Renew Atlanta infrastructure bond program. Currently, the VIC integrates approximately 7,500 publicly and privately owned cameras which significantly increase the Atlanta Police Department?s coverage and situational awareness of the city streets, using state-of-the-art analytical software.

Princeton Identity has recently implemented an iris recognition system at Brevillier Village, a long term care and independent residential/retirement facility in Erie, Pennsylvania, that will make access control procedures easier and more convenient for both residents and staff. According to Jean LaFuria, Vice President of Residential Services, Brevillier Village, there were problems on-site when residents had difficulty using the access control keypads to move about the facility. A variety of options were investigated, including larger keypads to increase visibility, but none were an ideal solution.

SIA has led a coalition in support of extending the current exemption for security and life safety products, which is set to expire on July 1, 2017. Without an extension, manufacturers must redesign EPS products to meet the ?no-load? standard, more than doubling their cost unnecessarily. H.R. 6375 is supported by SIA, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, and the Electronic Security Association, which have also worked with energy efficiency community on the common-sense provision.

Leading sensor manufacturer OPTEX has announced the global roll out of its outdoor and high-resolution indoor laser sensor RLS-2020S, complementing its next-generation REDSCAN mini sensor that features a 20x20m detection range. The S-model features an enhanced microprocessor that provides more powerful sensing capabilities. In indoor environments, it can be set up to identify fast traveling objects or very small objects. This information can be relayed to a Video Management Software (VMS) to provide a quicker, more accurate response. A Capital One survey found that more than half (52 percent) of security professionals see video surveillance as the technology trend that will have the biggest impact on their businesses in the coming year – a significant increase from 2015 when only 23 percent of respondents answered similarly. Growth of interconnected devices (the “Internet of Things”) was cited as the next most significant trend at 28 percent.
