MESSOA Introduces Industry’s First 3MP IP License Plate Recognition Camera

By Brianna Crandall , February 17, 2014—International surveillance technology manufacturer MESSOA Technologies recently announced the launch of the LPR606, which the company says is the industry’s first three-megapixel (3MP) Internet protocol (IP) bullet license plate recognition/automatic number plate recognition (LPR/ANPR) network camera. The newest addition to MESSOA’s existing IP traffic camera lineup was specifically engineered for overview and access-control LPR applications at car parks, toll booths, gated communities, and a variety of low-speed environments. Designed with access control in mind, the LPR606 is suitable for applications of capturing vehicles with reflective license plates traveling at moderate speeds up to 60km/h. The 3MP resolution of the LPR606 reportedly allows for a much wider view and more details compared to one with video graphics array (VGA), covering up to two traffic lanes with just a single camera. Not only does it reduce the total cost of ownership, the camera delivers much enhanced image quality, which ensures plate recognition results are up to high-level standards, says MESSOA. The LPR606 is equipped with a 30m infrared (IR) light-emitting diode (LED) unit that generates the adequate, even illumination needed for high-megapixel images at difficult lighting conditions. Thanks to MESSOA’s low-light expertise and the camera’s LPR-oriented specifications, such as configurable shutter speed, iris, and illumination control, the LPR606 is able to deliver unparalleled imaging performance that yields superior license plate recognition rates, claims the company. Deployment-wise, the three-axis cable management bracket and external lens adjustment significantly facilitates installation of this outdoor-ready LPR/ANPR camera. The LPR606 […]

Video Analytics Provides Solution For Telkom South Africa

12-02-2014 Telkom, South Africa’s largest integrated telecommunications company with over 400 stores, recently deployed the services of systems integrator Itec Digital to install Vi-System, Agent Vi’s real-time video analytics software, integrated with IP cameras from Axis Communications. Telkom sought a people counting solution with a comprehensive reporting structure to analyse footfall trends across the stores. They required accurate data regarding the number of people entering the stores across different time periods vs. revenue generated, to shed light on customer behaviour at the stores. At each Telkom site, 1-2 cameras (depending on whether there is 1 or 2 store entrances) from Axis Communications were installed and enabled with Vi-System to undertake people counting. As people counting draws the most accurate results when undertaken by cameras with a tilt angle (between lens position and ground) of 90 degrees, Axis M3203 (fixed dome network) IP cameras were installed directly above the entrances / exits. The Vi-Agent software component was embedded in the cameras. Itec Digital deployed Vi-System’s “People counting” rule as well as configuring automatic reports from Vi-System’s “Advanced Counting Reports” tool, to attain the requested data. Agent Vi’s people counting solution provides valuable data to Telkom South Africa regarding the number of customers in each store. Using Agent Vi’s advanced reporting tool, a daily footfall report is generated in each store, with presentation of hourly statistics. All the reports are sent to the Marketing Department at Telkom’s headquarters, and such data is imported into Telkom’s ERP system. These automatic reports supply […]

Progress Made On Freeport IL Public Safety Plan

FREEPORT – Thirty-two gas stations and retail shops that sell tobacco have installed video cameras in an effort to help police reduce crime. The surveillance camera initiative is among several public safety initiatives rolled out last year by Mayor Jim Gitz’s administration. Aldermen discussed progress that’s been made and remaining goals to tackle in the year ahead at a Committee of the Whole meeting Monday. The public safety plan aims to reduce crime by creating safer neighborhoods, promoting personal accountability, developing stronger community relationships, creating safe housing, fostering interdepartmental cooperation in distribution of city resources and making sound, data-driven decisions. Aldermen raised the majority of their questions Monday about the safer neighborhoods goal, which involves tobacco licensing, street lights and pole cameras and a K-9 program. The Police Department has implemented a program for licensing of tobacco merchants in order to hold them accountable for maintenance and operation of security cameras in their stores. "The program that we’re implementing does two things: it gives us a licensing framework in which we can say, ‘Look, this isn’t working. You need to fix it,’ the same way we do with liquor," Gitz said. "The second thing it does is give us – finally – a tool that we also can utilize for the surveillance cameras. Most of these stores, they don’t have good surveillance, which is a far bigger problem than who has what cigarettes." Deputy Police Chief Jim Drehoble has visited retail outlets throughout the city to ensure the video […]

As Facial Regulation Technology Is Poised For Everyday Life, Regulators Express Concern

Lexology author: Camille Calman Recent news stories have highlighted the negative privacy implications of facial recognition technology. For example, a new app for Google Glass will pair facial recognition with data from social media and dating sites, allowing users to instantly see personal information about strangers they pass on the street. (Though Google does not permit facial recognition software to be used on its Google Glass platform, the app could be used on jailbroken Google Glass devices.)  Forbes  reports that Senator Al Franken has written to the app developer to express deep concern and ask it to delay the app’s launch, or at least require people to opt in before their data is displayed to others. Meanwhile, the  New York Times  reports that some retail stores and airports already use facial recognition technology, and other such uses are on the way. The Times quotes Jessica Rich, director of the FTC’s Consumer Protection Bureau, as saying, “This is another reason that we need omnibus privacy legislation.” On Feb. 6, 2014, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), a division of the Department of Commerce, held the first in a series of meetings about the commercial use of facial recognition technology. The more than 120 attendees included representatives from business, advertising, and government as well as privacy advocates.  Seven additional meetings  are scheduled between February and June of this year. The NTIA hopes that the meetings will lead to a voluntary code of conduct. It’s clear that facial recognition involves a […]

Boulder Police Secretly Install Surveillance Cameras On Municipal Campus Between City Hall, Library

BOULDER, Colo. – Some Boulder residents are questioning their police department’s decision to install surveillance cameras in the park area between city hall and the public library, without letting the public know. The city quietly placed two cameras on the municipal building and one on the library in early January. When asked about the secrecy, Boulder Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kobel said, "The reason those cameras were installed is because we have an ongoing criminal investigation in the area." Kobel gave few details about the investigation, but did say police have received numerous complaints about criminal behavior, including assault, threatening behavior, urinating in public and drug dealing. "In some cases, we have drug dealing to high school students," she said. The cameras have touched a raw nerve with some residents, especially those who hang out in the public space. "They’re violating our rights and our freedom," said Bailey Flood. When asked if it would have made a difference if the city had been upfront about the cameras, Flood replied, "No, it’s an invasion of privacy." Not everyone looks at it that way. "They’re fine," said Jeff Swann, who admits that he drinks regularly while sitting on a park bench in front of City Hall. "Cameras are a part of life."   Swann says he’s observed a lot of criminal behavior in the park. "There was a big fight here two or three days ago," he said. "It was a real live brawl. It lasted five minutes. Both guys were […]
