Security Cameras Coming To Pelham (Bronx) Parkway Houses

Residents at the Throggs Neck Houses will see similar security cameras installed, thanks to almost $5 million in city funding obtained by City Councilman Jimmy Vacca. Vacca, officials from the NYC Housing Authority and others inked the final paperwork on Friday, Feb. 28 to begin installation work after the two-year red tape funding wait. With a large populaton of senior citizens living in its 23 six-story buildings, the move for security cameras at the Pelham Parkway Houses, off Williamsbridge Road and Astor Avenue,was sparked by the murder of an 88-year-old grandmother two years ago. Vacca previously secured funding for security cameras now in place at two senior citizen NYCHA buildings in his district, at Middletown Plaza and Boston Road Plaza. “Cameras make developments, as well as the surrounding residential communities, safer,” he noted. “I put my money where my mouth is by getting city funding in place,” said Vacca. “Now, the finalization of the Pelham Parkway camera design means we are moving full steam ahead. Ballantyne Strong Launches Video Security Services
Ballantyne Strong will display new cloud-based video security services at an April security industry conference. The Omaha firm said Monday it will provide clients access to security cameras and videos through a web browser or mobile device. The company traditionally sold movie projector equipment, and is diversifying its business with networked equipment monitoring and advertising and communications screen technology. The company said the new video security services follow a reseller agreement with video surveillance equipment manufacturer VIAAS. Its video security solutions business will be led by Josh Galley, vice president of the Strong Technology Group. “We are very excited about our entrance into the physical security market, as it has significant growth opportunities and will enable us to leverage our existing infrastructure,” said Gary Cavey, president and CEO of Ballantyne Strong. “Our existing field services group will handle installations of the video cameras and our Network Operations Centers will provide the managed services for video event monitoring. We believe our new video surveillance solutions will provide excellent opportunities to diversify our revenue mix and increase the base of recurring revenue in our managed services business.” The services will be demonstrated at the 2014 ISC West exhibition from April 2 through April 4 in Las Vegas. Surveillance Video Was Properly Admitted, Court Rules
A three-judge appellate panel in the Seventh District recently affirmed the judgment of the Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas. The judges ruled that Shawn Green was properly convicted on charges of felonious assault, assault, resisting arrest and possession of cocaine. Green challenged the trial court’s decision to admit video surveillance footage of the incident leading to his arrest. According to the factual and procedural history provided by the Seventh District, Officers Quinn and Mulligan responded to a call about an armed man who was fighting with two females in a bar in Youngstown on March 15, 2012. The officers entered the bar and approached Green from two different directions. Quinn testified that she could see a “bulge” in Green’s pocket and believed it was a firearm. As she approached, Quinn reached for the suspected gun but Green turned and punched her in the throat, causing her head to hit the wall behind her. Quinn tried to subdue Green with her Taser as she was falling but accidentally hit Mulligan. Quinn passed out and when she regained consciousness she said she saw Mulligan struggling to control Green. Mulligan testified that, due to his struggle with Green, he did not initially realize that he had been struck by the Taser. Additional officers eventually responded to the scene and, together, they were able to subdue Green. The bulge in his pocket turned out to be marijuana, cocaine and packaging baggies. In Kinsasha – capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo – two eight-foot-tall robots have been installed in order to direct traffic. As you can see above, the machines look more than a little absurd – like something straight out of a 1960s science fiction film. They aren’t exactly intelligent, either. They just tell cars where to go. And apparently, they do a better job of it than the human operators ever did – apparently, people just tend to listen to them more readily. It may have something to do with the fact that each of the two robots is equipped with an array of security cameras to record ne’erdowells. They’re basically highly visible speed cameras. At this point, you’re probably scoffing a bit. After all, this has nothing to do with robotics, right? Those two machines are basically glorified, highly-visible speed cameras. Of course people behave around them! Why wouldn’t they? Not only that, they’re something like eight feet tall. I don’t know about you, but if a machine that size directed me to do something, I’d more than likely comply – even if I did realize on some level that it was merely an inanimate object. A recent legal decision in North Dakota that used evidence against an American citizen using a drone – and gathered without a warrant – raises some interesting arguments about the Fourth Amendment in the 21 st century. Rodney Brossart was sentenced to three years in prison in January for a June 2011 incident involving police, a neighbor, and six cows. (In the end, he will serve three months in prison and three months at home. ) At some point, local police borrowed a drone used by the border patrol to take photographic evidence during a confrontation between Brossart, his family members and a police SWAT team. Brossart’s lawyer wanted the case thrown out because the drone surveillance was conducted without a warrant. The attorney, Bruce Quick, said in March 2012 that, “it’s bizarre to me they would be using military drones for that purpose. … I don’t think those things are intended to be used for that.” State prosecutor Douglas Manbeck countered the anti-drone argument, saying there is “no existing case law that bars their use in investigating crimes.” In July 2012, State District Judge Joel Medd allowed the drone evidence to stand, saying, “there was no improper use of an unmanned aerial vehicle.” Brossart and his sons threatened and fought officers at the scene, in an armed standoff that was witnessed by the drone as it was used to show live video to police. During the investigation of a burglary at Jared’s the Galleria of Jewelry on Pines Boulevard, the Pembroke Pines Police Department learned that Officer Kevin Burgs, 36, took a watch valued at $795.00 from the store, according to a statement from the department. The reported theft was captured on the store’s surveillance video cameras. Burgs was arrested Thursday and charged with Grand Theft. Burgs, a nine year veteran of the Pembroke Pines Police Department, has been placed on suspension with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation. Police were called to the store Wednesday morning after a couple of cat burglars broke into the store overnight and got away with $75-thousand worth of jewelry. The two burglars got into the store by cutting a hole in the roof. Once inside, they smashed the glass cases and grabbed the high-priced goods.
