Vacca previously secured funding for security cameras now in place at two senior citizen NYCHA buildings in his district, at Middletown Plaza and Boston Road Plaza. “Cameras make developments, as well as the surrounding residential communities, safer,” he noted. “I put my money where my mouth is by getting city funding in place,” said Vacca. “Now, the finalization of the Pelham Parkway camera design means we are moving full steam ahead. Digital Watchdog Acquires Award Winning Innovative Security Designs IP-Camera Manufacturer

The NVRPRO Network Video Recorders from Genie CCTV come with Dual Network Cards which enable connection to different network segments. This maximises network efficiency and improves CCTV security the makers say. The Dual IP Application allows users to communicate between remote WAN access and the IP video system without compromise to the separated recording networks bandwidth. It also reduces susceptibility of unauthorised access to the recorder and the IP cameras. Besides the security and data protection, Genie says its product makes the management of video much easier and more flexible. A range of WAN IP addresses can be stored into the product management set up programme which only allows authorised security managers and users to access the system. Within the LAN IP Management System only administered LAN IP addresses can access video, meaning that non-registered LAN computer users cannot interfere with the system. Having a video network dedicated to one of the LAN ports on the recorder alleviates network bandwidth requirements, the manufacturers add, as only the IP cameras reside on this private ‘video network connection’. This means authorised WAN/ Intranet/Internet users do not ‘load traffic’ within the video surveillance network. Web: www.geniecctv.com

In New Jersey, A Call For More Video Surveillance At Atlantic City Casinos

Long view of the Maryland Live poker room, via one of the casino’s pan-tilt-zoom surveillance cameras. Faces in the screencap have been blurred by casino officials to protect player identities. (Courtesy photo.) In my story on the front page of Sunday’s print edition about the surveillance operation at Maryland Live Casino , I mentioned that Rob Norton, the property’s president and general manager, asked me at one point if I’d ever seen “Casino.” He was specifically referring to the scene where Robert De Niro — who plays Tangiers boss Ace Rothstein – explains the way things work in the gambling world: In Vegas, everybody’s gotta watch everybody else. Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players. The box men are watching the dealers. The floor men are watching the box men. The pit bosses are watching the floor men. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The casino manager is watching the shift bosses. I’m watching the casino manager. And the eye in the sky is watching us all. “You can quote from that,” Norton told me. “It’s still pretty accurate.” But the notion that every casino is watching (or at least recording) everybody, at all times, isn’t exactly true. Consider what’s happening in New Jersey, where one lawmaker has proposed legislation that would require Atlantic City casinos to put surveillance […]

Surveillance Video Was Properly Admitted, Court Rules

A three-judge appellate panel in the Seventh District recently affirmed the judgment of the Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas. The judges ruled that Shawn Green was properly convicted on charges of felonious assault, assault, resisting arrest and possession of cocaine. Green challenged the trial court’s decision to admit video surveillance footage of the incident leading to his arrest. According to the factual and procedural history provided by the Seventh District, Officers Quinn and Mulligan responded to a call about an armed man who was fighting with two females in a bar in Youngstown on March 15, 2012. The officers entered the bar and approached Green from two different directions. Quinn testified that she could see a “bulge” in Green’s pocket and believed it was a firearm. As she approached, Quinn reached for the suspected gun but Green turned and punched her in the throat, causing her head to hit the wall behind her. Quinn tried to subdue Green with her Taser as she was falling but accidentally hit Mulligan. Quinn passed out and when she regained consciousness she said she saw Mulligan struggling to control Green. Mulligan testified that, due to his struggle with Green, he did not initially realize that he had been struck by the Taser. Additional officers eventually responded to the scene and, together, they were able to subdue Green. The bulge in his pocket turned out to be marijuana, cocaine and packaging baggies. Quinn was treated for a back sprain, neck sprain and contusions. […]

Guangdong Province Selected For First Demonstration Of China National SVAC Video Surveillance Standard

The announcement mentions that continuous advances in the performance of video-surveillance equipment and applications, including devices and systems, have been accompanied by a variety of formats and standards, which have reduced government’s ability to protect public safety and share, transmit, and store image data in networks. Therefore, an urgent need has arisen for networking and image coding techniques that follow a unified national standard. At the same time, China has sought to develop its domestic security industry, supported by domestically owned intellectual property rights, which follow uniform national standards that support higher image coding and video encryption. To achieve these goals, the Ministry of Public Security selected Guangdong province as the first province for a demonstration of the SVAC video-surveillance standard. As of the end of 2013, Guangdong province had already completed installed a total 1.81 million image-acquisition sites, comprised of two different types, which have played an important role in the administration of public security. About Guangdong Province Guangdong Province possesses the largest economy in terms of GDP and some of the strongest scientific and technological capabilities and the most developed foreign trade in China. As the pioneer in China’s economic reform and opening, Guangdong province maintains rapid and sustainable development of its economy, marks constant improvement in its degree of openness, and ranks first in China according to many economic indicators. The province’s GDP contributes about one-eighth of national GDP, and has ranked the largest for many years. The value of Guangdong’s total import and export trade represents approximately […]

(OTC: DIRV), a company focused on ownership and management of leading video and security technology companies, today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, DirectView Security Systems, Inc. ("DirectView Security"), has begun early stage discussions with several marijuana industry companies to provide a number of potential video surveillance and access control solutions. DirectView Security sees tremendous growth potential for the Company in this rapidly evolving industry as companies scramble to develop a foothold and meet the ever changing legal requirements for security for both growers and dispensaries. According to several published reports typical dispensaries will need to employ dozens of security cameras, motion detectors, infrared sensors, and 24/7 recording. At most dispensaries, those entering must pass through three doors, show ID and present a verified doctor’s note. With the sale of medical marijuana being approved and rolled out in over 18 states and the sale of marijuana for recreational use already approved in Colorado and Washington, this industry is experiencing rapid growth. According to an April 2013 article published in the Wall Street Journal, an estimated 2,000 to 4,000 businesses produce marijuana legally under state laws. In each state a marijuana related company must meet strict guidelines for security and these requirements often vary. In Massachusetts, for example, according to a February 2014 article in the Boston Globe, the law requires video cameras to be installed and operating in all areas that contain marijuana: in parking lots, safes, vaults, sales […]

Apparently, Humans Are Programmed To Obey Robots

In Kinsasha – capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo – two eight-foot-tall robots have been installed in order to direct traffic. As you can see above, the machines look more than a little absurd – like something straight out of a 1960s science fiction film. They aren’t exactly intelligent, either. They just tell cars where to go. And apparently, they do a better job of it than the human operators ever did – apparently, people just tend to listen to them more readily.  It may have something to do with the fact that each of the two robots is equipped with an array of security cameras to record ne’erdowells. They’re basically highly visible speed cameras. At this point, you’re probably scoffing a bit. After all, this has nothing to do with robotics, right? Those two machines are basically glorified, highly-visible speed cameras. Of course people behave around them! Why wouldn’t they?  Not only that, they’re something like eight feet tall. I don’t know about you, but if a machine that size directed me to do something, I’d more than likely comply – even if I did realize on some level that it was merely an inanimate object. Ultimately, it appears as though the deference people give these simple traffic bots tells us very little about how robots and humans relate to one another.   Uh, yeah. Turns out, it isn’t actually that simple. According to scientists in the field of robot-human interaction, the human brain is wired in […]

A Legal Victory For Drones Warrants A Fourth Amendment Discussion

A recent legal decision in North Dakota that used evidence against an American citizen using a drone – and gathered without a warrant – raises some interesting arguments about the Fourth Amendment in the 21 st century. Rodney Brossart was sentenced to three years in prison in January for a June 2011 incident involving police, a neighbor, and six cows. (In the end, he will serve three months in prison and three months at home. ) At some point, local police borrowed a drone used by the border patrol to take photographic evidence during a confrontation between Brossart, his family members and a police SWAT team. Brossart’s lawyer wanted the case thrown out because the drone surveillance was conducted without a warrant.  The attorney, Bruce Quick, said in March 2012 that, “it’s bizarre to me they would be using military drones for that purpose. … I don’t think those things are intended to be used for that.” State prosecutor Douglas Manbeck countered the anti-drone argument, saying there is “no existing case law that bars their use in investigating crimes.” In July 2012, State District Judge Joel Medd allowed the drone evidence to stand, saying, “there was no improper use of an unmanned aerial vehicle.” Brossart and his sons threatened and fought officers at the scene, in an armed standoff that was witnessed by the drone as it was used to show live video to police.  The drone was also used to locate Brossart’s family before the confrontation. The Brossart […]

The two burglars got into the store by cutting a hole in the roof. Once inside, they smashed the glass cases and grabbed the high-priced goods. A roofer who patched the hole said this was not a haphazard job. ”They had to bring a battery powered saw up there. They knew there was going to be corrugated metal, they knew how to cut it, like they cut it perfectly square,” explained roofer William Natale. Police said the crooks were dressed in all black and wore masks.  In surveillance […]
