The bill, officially known as the ?Promoting Travel, Commerce, and National Security Act? aims to streamline travel and commerce between the U.S. and Canada by allowing for more pre-clearance of passengers traveling between countries. Pre-clearance is when passengers undergo border inspections prior to traveling and can help to avoid bottlenecks at border-crossings.

Canada Eyes Wider Biometric Info Sharing

OTTAWA – Canada is eyeing greatly expanded sharing of immigration information — such as fingerprints of visa applicants — with not only the United States but other key allies. An internal memo prepared for Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander says the government is building an information technology system that could be used for the systematic exchange of biometric data with Britain, Australia and New Zealand. "Systematic sharing is preferable to manual case-by-case sharing because it can generate faster responses and be done at higher volumes," says the briefing memo, obtained under the Access to information Act. The federal government is already pursuing wide-scale sharing of immigration information with the United States under the highly publicized perimeter security pact. Beginning this year, the fingerprints of visa applicants to Canada from more than two dozen countries will be checked against a U.S. database that includes the prints of immigration violators, criminals and known or suspected terrorists. The federal privacy commissioner has expressed concerns about high-volume, routine information sharing with other countries, saying it may be impossible to control what happens to that data once sent abroad. The government says such data-sharing is essential to fight fraud and abuse of Canada’s immigration system. Biometric information — unique identifiers such as an iris scan or a fingerprint record — is considered especially useful. Lately there has been intense scrutiny of Canada’s security relationship with its closest allies — collectively known as the Five Eyes — due to intelligence leaks by former American […]

Guards At Canadian Prisons Videoed Hitting Inmates

TORONTO, Nov. 15 (UPI) — Security cameras at prisons in Ontario and Quebec recorded guards hitting inmates, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. The CBC, in a report Thursday, said it and Radio Canada had obtained the videos. While the guards whose actions were videotaped have been dismissed and even criminally charged, surveillance cameras are not universal inside Canadian prisons, the CBC said. Howard Sapers, Canada’s federal prison watchdog, also said in a report that the cameras are ineffective about 70 percent of the time because of poor quality, breakdowns and incompatible systems. Inmate advocates say the country needs to install security cameras throughout its prison system and to make sure their recordings are usable. “It’s terrorism. I mean these guys are abusing their authority and they’re terrorizing people who are under their control,” Kevin Egan, a lawyer in Ontario said of the beatings. “The purpose of our prison system is to rehabilitate. And it may be that it’s not just inmates that need to be rehabilitated, but the guards.” Jean-Claude Van Damme performs ‘epic split’ in Volvo ad British couple leaves sassy apology note to burglars $10 million bra unveiled at Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Sony launches PlayStation 4; Hundreds in line Brandi Brandt faces drug charges in Australia Lily Allen rejects ‘Hard Out Here’ racism claims Outback comes to West Texas when pet kangaroo gets loose in Midland County Jerry Lawler challenges Andy Kaufman to rematch — if he’s alive London firefighters urge ‘common sense’ after penis freed […]

Ottawa Security Company Surpasses $100K Indiegogo Goal

By Jacob Serebrin With the campaign running until Sept. 20, the company is now aiming for $200,000. “It’s a good feeling,” said Russell Ure, the company’s president and co-founder. “We set out in this campaign to get validation.” Blacksumac ’s Piper is a camera-equipped home security and automation device that sends security alerts directly to a user’s smartphone or tablet. Launching a campaign on Indiegogo, rather than attempting to get their product into stores through more traditional methods, was a key part of the company’s strategy, said Mr. Ure. “It allows you to pre-sell significantly earlier than any other channel,” he said. The company is currently in talks with a large box store – Mr. Ure declined to name the company – to get Piper on the shelves. However he said selling the product months in advance wouldn’t have been possible if the company had only gone that route. “You get a chance to test your market,” he said. Going the crowdfunding funding route also allowed the company to gather feedback about the product before it launched. “We’ve learned a lot,” said Mr. Ure. He said that customer concern over the security of data stored in the cloud prompted the company to give users the option to store recorded data locally. The company also expanded their target market through the process. “Initially, we started off focusing on apartments,” he said. “Most people who live in apartments don’t have security systems.” According to Mr. Ure, many people who live in […]
